Bio: Charley Crockett has been an unstoppable force in the indie country circuit in the past few years but getting to the point he’s at now is an insane story to follow. Born in San Benito, Texas and later relocating to Dallas, Crockett grew up on a steady diet of hip hop until he moved to New Orleans with an uncle for the summer who helped him grow to love the brass bands in the city. At 17, Crockett dropped out of high school and started travelling the world with his guitar. He would hitchhike and ride in boxcars to get around, ending up in New York, New Orleans, LA, even Paris and Morocco at one point, playing his songs wherever he could for whoever would listen. Returning to the US, Crockett sold and harvested marijuana for a couple of years before getting arrested in 2014. He was also charged with two felonies during this time period. In 2015, he returned to Dallas and self-released his first album, A Stolen Jewel which got good reviews in the local scene but 2016’s In The Night made bigger waves, landing him opening slots with Lucero, The Old 97’s, and the Turnpike Troubadours. While he was slowly building his profile, it wasn’t until 2020’s Welcome to Hard Times that Charley would start getting national attention. It’s only fitting that this was the album to do it as the album followed a health scare which caused him to have open heart surgery. The album got glowing reviews and that attention hasn’t slowed down since. Since then, he’s put out another two albums of studio material and two albums of covers and even made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live this past December.
What To Expect From Their Show: The first thing you should be ready for is how great Charley’s band is. There’s a member of his band that’s always stage left that plays the trumpet and the piano at the same time at points, it’s wild to see. Second, Charley has awesome dance moves and is an electrifying performer. He has one move where he’ll shake his hips while dropping down to his knees and shimmying back up again. Finally, his banter on stage is super fun, usually full of limericks and funny one liners. For those that see him, he’ll be a great time.
Fun Facts:
The song Don’t Cry was co-written by Dan Auerbach.
Yes, he is a distant relative of Davy Crockett
Before he had heart surgery, Charley’s go-to Whataburger order was a double cheeseburger with bacon, an order of pancakes, and an extra large unsweet tea

Where The Hell Do I Start In His Discog? My go to place for you to start in Charley’s discography is Welcome to Hard Times. What do you think about that album? If you want a more swampy, blusier take on it, go back to the beginning and listen to In The Night or Lonesome as a Shadow. Did you like the story telling? Try The Man From Waco or The Valley next. Do you just want to see if he can strike gold twice? Listen to Music City USA! Do you just like Charley’s voice and enthusiasm? If that’s the case, he has a ton of covers albums, my favorite being his 10 For Slim album full of James Hand covers and Lil G.L.’s Blue Bonanza.
In 2018, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit headlined Floyd Fest. Before their set though, members of his band and crew did the festival thing and walked around and saw a bunch of sets before it was their time to work. Isbell’s sound engineer stumbled across one set that blew him away. He managed to find a CD of this artists music, passed it along to lead guitarist Sadler Vaden, and two days later, he sent an email to a young artist named Morgan Wade asking if she wanted to write together and also taking an interest in producing for her. In 2021, the album, Reckless, was released to widespread critical acclaim. The writing on the album is incredible, navigating the normal country tropes of love, heartbreak, and Morgan’s dishevled mind in a much more honest and, at times, sobering way. Since then, she’s been touring relentlessly, taking breaks to put out a deluxe album and an acoustic EP. She’s become one of my favorite artists in the indie country scene in the past year and I am jealous of all of you guys getting to see her.
What To Expect From Their Show:
Some sad ass country songs with a kind of alt-rock flair to them. I’ve only been able to see Morgan once when she opened a show for American Aquarium and it was an acoustic set. That show was really my first impression to her and I’ve loved her ever since. Her voice is fantastic, her lyrics are beautiful, and she is hilarious on stage. I haven’t been able to see her with her full band unfortunately but I imagine it’ll still be just as good.
Fun Facts:
- Her first band was formed from musicians she found on Craigslist - Ethan Luck, current bassist for Reliant K, is also Morgan’s lead guitarist
Songs You Should Check Out:
Where Do I Start Wi- She only has one album and that album also has a deluxe version of it. Listen to the standard version of the album, you don’t need the bonus stuff.
