all the guys in meshuggah have that derek trucks stage presence. they just kind of stand there with expressionless faces but i'm still like "woah what an amazing performance".
it's funny you say that. I was at the Derek Trucks Superjam, left to catch Deafheaven > Meshuggah

Derek Trucks would be a tasteful follow up to this year's SJ. Has anyone other than Ed Helms ever led two though?
2005 ?uestlove played drums with herbie hancock and pino palladino
2007 ?uestlove played drums with ben harper and john paul jones for a led zeppelin superjam
I don't mind maybe one repeat artist, but not with Knocked Loose at Roo.
For example, Riot Fest books GWAR and Andrew WK every year and it's pretty fun but also they kinda fit in with the culture Riot Fest has, also GWAR is pretty much a meme band and people go solely to get splashed with fake blood.
If Roo were to repeat artists, I think it should be a jam band. Because of Roo's roots. I'm still not a fan of that idea tho.
And just curious, would your reasoning be a lack of variety or excitement from lineup to lineup?
I think just lack of excitement since we got them already. I'd prefer roo books another hardcore/metalcore band
Do you guys think it would be a bad idea to book Knocked Loose again in 2024? Only using them as an example.
I think we’ve gone too far in this direction of “no repeats under any circumstances unless there was a massive popularity shift between years.”
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with re-booking an extremely successful show. Or even 5-7 shows. Creates opportunity for very small tradition type Roo bands to be established. Heck maybe it could even turn into almost an award in the mind of Roo fans. Which 7 bands earned a repeat? Maybe Roo gives the bands a bonus like a “fight of the night” bonus in the UFC.
There has to be a balance to make sure the lineup is fresh and not too samey, but I think what I’m suggesting here could be fun.
Would even be sick if attendees had input on it in the survey. Picturing in like 5 years something like “Knocked loose is the longest reigning / returning act after earning a ‘show of the weekend’ placement in 6 consecutive years.”
EDIT: and I only mentioned fans having input and not completely deciding it, because you’d need some sort of correction for the fans not just voting the 7 most popular bands. Idk what that would be but it could be figured out.
Knocked Loose is in my top 5 favorite Bonnaroo shows this year but I wouldn't be half as excited to see them on the lineup again next year. I think the system of only doing repeats if an artist puts out an album that changes the trajectory of their career is a good one. Kendrick going from Section 80 to GKMC is a good example. That repeat was deserved. Booking the same hardcore/metal act again next year when there are so many options would be lazy to me.

Not too familiar with the genre so probably a ton of bands that I don’t know that would be great, but would love Drug Church or Kublai Khan TX would be dope.

But their fans definitely don’t just stand there. I think the most scared I’ve ever been in a crowd was when I saw Meshuggah open for Tool. The guy next to be was headbanging so violently that I thought he was going to slam his head into my head.
counterpoint, cory wong should lead every superjam moving forward.
Damn it was that good, huh?
i was really impressed. it's basically everything you want a post-oates superjam to be, sans super big name guests. lots of fun songs played amazingly well with minimal downtime. i could've easily watched them go another hour. and they had more in the tank because somebody off stage gave cory the "time" signal and he said thanks and exited the stage abruptly.

I don't really see it as lazy because I think implementing a system like I'm suggesting would actually take a solid amount of incremental effort. But I get why the excitement factor could be low. I'm just having this feeling today like more Bonnaroo mainstays, traditions, and familiarity would be a good thing.

Why even invite Hanson if they’re not going to play MMMBop?
Why even invite Hanson if they’re not going to play MMMBop?
honestly i didn't even realize they were there until i read that setlist. i knew somebody sang "I Want You Back" but didn't know who it was. i can't verify any member of Hanson was actually there.
i do wonder if mmmbop was on the setlist but got cut for time. would've made sense as a big closer.
I ran into my girl Bailey I hadn’t talked to since Bonnaroo and we sat at the bar with K tripping over all those great sets we saw - 3 6, Korn, Kendrick, Vulfpeck, STS9, Shaq (also Knocked Loose and Noah for her) and she busted out Jacob Collier as #1 who had her bawling at the show. I had to fist her off on that since he was the one who got me this Bonnaroo. Might be the only tears I ever shed at Roo too so it hit home.

After this year I think some member/form of Vulfpeck is a requirement going forward. Totally owned the weekend and most of what my group is still talking about (besides LADIES MOSHPIT). Also someone my wife works with was talking about how he was getting into them and my brother in law was listening to the Roo Spotify playlist and said he really liked them (he's more of a country music fan). I think they are primed to be huge, especially if they have another hit. Just the perfect Bonnaroo vibes from the whole band, ya know?

I didn't feel like I had a choice when I was standing right side of Tyler Childers. It turned into a "can't beat them, join them" situation. I walked up on what looked like 4-5 people that were still on meth since the 3 6 mafia pit the day before punching the air in a circle of 40 people watching them. Band took like 5 minutes to get going between songs. I thought it was worth it for the sight seeing.
