They didn't say they were the only metal band to ever play. They said they were the only music like "this" at Bonnaroo (this year). Then they said they were currently playing the heaviest show ever at Bonnaroo. That could be true, but even if it isn't I don't see any issue with them hyping their show up mid-set.
But yes, Meshuggah, Mastodon, Slayer, Metallica, Deafheaven, Gojira and many more have played Bonanroo.

At Gwar the guy beside us openly sucked his girlfriend's bare honkers beneath the tent. Those folks were not attractive. Another person dumped a beer on my then-girlfriend's head. She was already not enthused for all the blood, gore, and baby killing onstage but that's what did her in. Pretty sure I finished the show alone.

Do you guys think it would be a bad idea to book Knocked Loose again in 2024? Only using them as an example.
I think we’ve gone too far in this direction of “no repeats under any circumstances unless there was a massive popularity shift between years.”
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with re-booking an extremely successful show. Or even 5-7 shows. Creates opportunity for very small tradition type Roo bands to be established. Heck maybe it could even turn into almost an award in the mind of Roo fans. Which 7 bands earned a repeat? Maybe Roo gives the bands a bonus like a “fight of the night” bonus in the UFC.
There has to be a balance to make sure the lineup is fresh and not too samey, but I think what I’m suggesting here could be fun.
Would even be sick if attendees had input on it in the survey. Picturing in like 5 years something like “Knocked loose is the longest reigning / returning act after earning a ‘show of the weekend’ placement in 6 consecutive years.”
EDIT: and I only mentioned fans having input and not completely deciding it, because you’d need some sort of correction for the fans not just voting the 7 most popular bands. Idk what that would be but it could be figured out.

I don't mind maybe one repeat artist, but not with Knocked Loose at Roo.
For example, Riot Fest books GWAR and Andrew WK every year and it's pretty fun but also they kinda fit in with the culture Riot Fest has, also GWAR is pretty much a meme band and people go solely to get splashed with fake blood.
If Roo were to repeat artists, I think it should be a jam band. Because of Roo's roots. I'm still not a fan of that idea tho.

And just curious, would your reasoning be a lack of variety or excitement from lineup to lineup?

I think they should book all the acts I like again and not repeat any of the acts I don't like. In all seriousness, I'd be fine with a few acts repeating but it does get annoying when they're acts you don't like.

i've been and continue to be a big proponent of bonnaroo having some repeat acts year over year. i like your quantity of 5-7 acts, something like that. it creates some continuity for attendees but also helps forge relationships between acts and bonnaroo. if you watched that MMJ 2004 doc it's lovely the fondness with which the band speaks of bonnaroo. now imagine if you had multiple different bands across different genres heaping praise upon bonnaroo.
to use your example, in a world where knocked loose had played bonnaroo like 3 times in a row, and it becomes an annual tradition for them, maybe they even stick around for a few days that weekend and see other bands, then they are out there talking about how cool bonnaroo is in interviews, on social media, etc., and that feeling seeps into their fanbase and they start saying "damn i gotta hit up bonnaroo it sounds awesome". also could result in other bands in Knocked Loose's orbit wanting to play bonnaroo who otherwise wouldn't even think about it. it simplifies booking and also results in free publicity for bonnaroo.
like there is zero reason not to just book MMJ for every bonnaroo. MMJ loves it, attendees love MMJ. sure maybe it makes each performance a little less "special" but who cares. and with a performance every year they could play around with scheduling as well, have some fun with it. of course they could do LN or pre-HL what or which, but wouldn't it also be awesome if MMJ opened the What stage one year? 2 hour MMJ set at 1pm? would be fucking rad, and so long as MMJ is getting paid the same they wouldn't give a shit.

Yeah the dream scenario would be to find a way to get a pretty good idea of 5 Tent shows that would be fairly universally recognized as a moment / holy shit show of the weekend. I think this would actually more closely guarantee a few extra good shows as opposed to rolling the dice on 5 newly booked acts from the 2 guys that book Bonnaroo.
I had no intention in going, because I was not familiar with DEP. But steveternal dragged me. We went for Cage the Elephant because they were on first and he wanted a good spot. I grabbed my rosary and followed him. We wound up on the rail to the right of the speakers. I knew we were in trouble when about 10 beefy security guys came up to the front. They started playing and I went "what the fuck is this shit?" But it was a blast. Being on the rail to the right protected us from the masses and mosh pits. Someone got their nose broke. And because it was so hot, the lead singer thought it was a good idea to throw out a CASE of water into the crowd.
I had a blast and was glad to make it out alive.
yeah that sounds fun as hell. Did the band climb all over everything?
I remember Ben climbed the entire speaker stack and tried to break the band sign name with his guitar while playing because it was in the way. Can confirm what Druid said about the case of water. He was whipping single bottles out and got bored/frustrated, so he tossed most of a case still in the polywrap. It was one of those shows where it started like half full and was full by the end bc the noise drew people in. Not my fave DEP show that I saw but definitely a Bonnaroo highlight.

Yeah and I'm starting to think they also get a WWE / UFC type belt that they thrust into the air before they perform if we roll with the "Top 5 tent show of the year" style award / format.
But yes, I think I'm in on your thinking here. Think it also adds a little identity to the fest. And if an act starts becoming stale, there could be this system that would naturally filter them out and replace them with a new one.
i've said this many times before on here, but I loved that meshuggah LN set. they are a band I don't listen to at all on record, but i caught the last bit of deafheaven and stuck around for meshuggah and was absolutely blown away by them.

it's pretty insane how precise and focused they are live while managing to still kick a wicked groove. also one of the best light guys in the biz. my first time seeing meshuggah my wife and i were on the left side of the sound booth, we had as much fun watching him flick those dials as we did watching the band.

all the guys in meshuggah have that derek trucks stage presence. they just kind of stand there with expressionless faces but i'm still like "woah what an amazing performance".

Derek Trucks would be a tasteful follow up to this year's SJ. Has anyone other than Ed Helms ever led two though?
