Just a hunch that we collectively don't actually like Night of the Living Dead that much. It's a cool low budget movie they pulled off and George Romero is the zombie master but he made better stuff later.

Agree to disagree. While I love Creepshow, Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead, NOTLD is timeless and inarguably one of the most influential horror films of all time. Its also a comfort movie for me that I watch probably once a month.
and there is this scene where Loomis sees somebody that looks like Michael Myers and he immediately goes full aggression waving his gun around, the guy gets scared and runs into the street, where a cop car slams into him and crushes him against a van or something and the dude immediately bursts into flames and burns to a crisp. it was insane and awesome and the best part is Loomis appears to have zero remorse for this random teenager's death.
that might be a famously bad scene everybody laughs at, i'm not up on the Halloween II discourse but i thought it was great.

Poltergeist and E.T. make such an interesting study in the two sides of Spielberg's coping with living through his parents' divorce in suburban California. They're like weird mirror images of each other, and it's really telling that the single mother gets the friendly alien while the nuclear family gets the creepy clown puppet and swimming pool full of skeletons.
