I told myself Friday I was going to keep this going on the weekend then I didn't. I'm sorry I'll try to do better.
I watched the first three scream movies this weekend though! I'd never seen them.
What'd you think?
I really enjoyed all of them! I had Scream 2 spoiled for me on Friday during the Big Picture Horror Movie Draft so I figured it was finally time to watch at least the first one. My wife had seen Scream 1 when it came out but she barely remembered it so it was new for both of us. Had so much fun Friday we watched 2 on Saturday and 3 on Sunday.
I didn't know how ahead of it's time the series was in terms of the meta/poking fun at the genre. It's a little on the nose by the slicker meta standards of today but I don't hold that against it. And the fact that it is so self-referential to it's own genre makes it impossible to criticize all the slasher film tropes, i.e. when the protagonist has a clear and easy opportunity to kill the slasher and/or take off their mask and just doesn't do it, or the many variations on the classic running-up-the-stairs-instead-of-out-of-the-house decisions.
The sheer amount of recognizable actors was fun too, all kinds of people I didn't realize were in the series. Scream 3 was elevated by the mere presence of Parker Posey who is a treasure in all ways. I also think Neve Campbell is maybe underrated as an actress? The role didn't give her a ton to work with it and yet she did a great job with it.
I also personally didn't notice a significant drop in quality across the trilogy. I could certainly nitpick the story but again I don't think the point of a movie like this is to have an airtight narrative with a big Usual Suspects reveal at the end, the point is to have fun and laugh at it and be entertained. I guess the biggest criticism I could level at it is I was never scared even the tiniest bit at any point during the movies. It was much more of a comedy-thriller than a true horror movie.
We'll watch 4 and 5 in the next week I imagine. My pure guess without reading any reviews is that 4 might be the first one to be bad but the reboot/5 will be a lot of fun.

Nice. Sadly, I have been unable to rewatch them since my wife pointed out how heartbreaking it would be to be Casey's parents in that first scene of the first film. I cannot unapply that lens to the film anymore and I'm bummed.
Y'all get your shit together and watch it. I welcome criticism but there's no reason it should go this early. It's freaky and campy and Bruce Willis plays an utter cuck. And Isabella Rosellinni is in it, fab as ever!

I have been trying to watch it this spooky season. Apparently it is only on Showtime, otherwise you have to rent or buy it. So fucking annoying. It is getting added to my physical copy selection for this reason.
