Speaking as someone who brings kids to the fest, I wish they'd go back to requiring a ticket for any kid over 3 or whatever it used to be. I do think a lot more people are just bringing their kids along since it's free, and while I love that the fest is so family friendly, I do think it contributes to the overcrowded feel. I think changing that back, plus removing some of the vendors/tents in the Fort area would really ease up congestion. I'm also fairly certain they're giving out more guest/family/friends passes, it felt like every fifth person I saw had a "Kin" badge on.
We brought our kids for the first time (not because it was free, we just haven’t had kids that long lol.) I was sure I was gonna have to at least “check them in” so to speak. Selfishly I don’t want to have to buy a full price ticket, but I’d think you could have limited cheaper or free kids tickets so you could at least have a handle on the numbers. Like parking passes—it’ll never sell out, but theoretically it could yknow?
Anyone here doing Jazz Fest? I'm gonna be there on Saturday and Sunday. Planning to mostly camp at the fort stage on Sunday for Herbie Hancock (after catching Cimafunk at Quad first thing) but probably go back and forth between Fort and Quad on Saturday, my priority that day is Thundercat. Anyone have recommendations for sets I shouldn't miss?

Rumors that Bon Iver is calling it quits after this tour so if that's the case I'd like to again thank NFF for failing to ever book them, great work
Woah, what are the details?
i can't quite recap it all (though it's all on the Bon Iver subreddit if you're interested) but long story short on the Deux Moi podcast, someone said that the Duluth show would be their last (which obviously isn't correct as they have other dates after), but then all these people started coming out of the woodwork with stories from crew members who have said there's plans for an "indefinite hiatus" after this run of shows. The BI sub is usually pretty well informed (I know the band and people connected to them actually spend time there), so there's probably some fire to this smoke.
That said, after 2012 Bon Iver took basically 4 years completely off (a one off show at EC in 2015 the only exception) so it could just be something like that. Or it could be that JV is tired of the whole project and is ready to hang it up, who knows.

Seems pretty legit and reasonable to me, thanks for recapping. That's a bummer to hear

I still don’t get how they have never been booked. JV has been to and played Newport. The entire network of musicians surrounding Bon Iver have either played or become integral components of the festival (w/ the exception of S Carey). They’ve toured quite extensively. And other niche indie-folk festivals have been able to book them.
My best guesses are that JV had a negative experience as part of Grandma’s Hands Band or that Bon Iver’s recent tours also coincided with the Newport years of Mumford, Dolly, Joni, and Paul (and Covid) and there just was never space as Jay lined up his white whales.
I'd be surprised if he had a negative experience with Grandma's Hands, he got to sing with John Prine too.
But yeah, I don't get how they haven't played either, really weird.

In speaking with JV after a local Bon Iver show a few years back he spoke highly of the festival, had fond memories, and said he plans to return. I don't think it's any sort of ill will but rather just scheduling. If BI does go on hiatus, I could see JV playing the festival solo or with another project sometime in the next couple years or perhaps BI returning from hiatus at the festival a few years down the line a la Fleet Foxes in 2017.
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

sorry too busy booking the same acts every other year to fit in a set from easily the preeminent folk-adjacent act of the last 15 years.

About to drive to Jazz from Boston now. For those who went yesterday, how were Big Freedia, Domi & JD Beck, and DJ Pee Wee? Wish I could have taken yesterday off work
For those who know the folk fest better than I do, do you think there is any miraculous chance they would book Blur? Saturday of Jazz was great by the way

Highlight of the day for me was Soulive but JD and Domi were incredible. And cool thing for the DJ Pee Wee set - they took all chairs out of the Quad to make it a big dance party.

Don’t see it happening.
Beyond the very loose connection (being generous) to folk, I don’t know of any connections between Damon and the artists who make up the festival board.
Newport also struggles to book British acts, and it’s likely partially due to falling right in the middle of British festival season and not able to offer them enough to make the trek over.

Blur has played exactly one USA fest in the last 25 years and it’s Coachella. And they’ve played about 5 total USA shows since reuniting 13 years ago. Zero chance.

They do that? I've always wanted them to do that for Folk Fest acts and thought it was a pipe dream.

I always assumed the recent failure to book Bon Iver had to do with the existence of the Eaux Claires fest. It was within a few years of Newport during Bon Iver’s second “prime” 2016-2019, and I gotta figure running your own small festival where you’re trying to book unique experiences and then heading right off to another small festival trying to book unique experiences would be too much for a variety of reasons.
For a small fest like EC I’d assume that whatever Bon Iver was up to was a major draw, and it would hurt Justin Vernon’s own fest to turn around and do the same thing at Newport two weeks later.
Doesn’t explain pre-2015, and it sucks, but that was always my assumption.

Whatever happened to that relationship they had formed with Cambridge Folk Festival(?) where they’d highlight an artist playing both festivals each year. They did it the year Darlingside opened up the Harbor but I don’t recall it continuing.

I’m very curious how they pulled this one off as I was under the impression that the fire code/marshalls was the reason they were required to have the chairs under the tents.

Hooooly shit Herbie Hancock was wonderful. Sunday I basically stayed at the fort stage starting with Scary Holdings and it was a lot more relaxing than Saturday going between different stages. Julian Lage was my great surprise of the weekend, talked to someone covering the fest for downbeat and he said not to miss him and he was right
