Sounds like a lower stakes affair this year, which might not be a bad thing for the future of the fest.
Any standout sets? The videos I saw from Maggie and MMJ sounded great. Anybody check out Angel Olsen, Madison Cunningham, Remi Wolf or M. Ward? Haven't seen much about those yet.
Any setlists emerge from Folk Family Revue?
Hope everybody had a great weekend, I definitely had some FOMO and can't wait to be back next year

Remi Wolf was a great Quad set. Had everyone up dancing. Really high energy. She commented on how she would normally have a lot of electronic aspects of her performance, but for the fest she brough about 10 musicians with her. They did a great job bringing her music to the fest.

Talked to a Relix photographer near me while waiting for Lana. Said that no photography was allowed in the photo pit, but there were house photographers on hand.

I’m like 50% certain Noah Kahan will be a 24 headliner, possibly unannounced, scheduled around a Fenway show.
Even though he cancelled Friday and then played through the weekend at other tour stops?
That seems judgmental for not knowing the whole situation. Wasn’t he in the hospital on Friday? He could have been throwing up all day and told he needed to rest his vocal chords for 24 hours afterwards.
Definitely sucks because he was my #1 act to see this year, and maybe I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt, but I don’t have any reason not to.

I thought LDR was fantastic and was a highlight of the weekend for me. I liked her heading into the fest - but didn’t expect much - she exceeded my expectations and I’m a much bigger fan now.
It had both high production and unscripted magic; both the essence of a headlining set you’d see at any music festival that was not Newport and the rawness you only get at Newport. She was incredibly reverential about the opportunity to play Newport - something we didn’t really get from several of the other big acts. She brought the ethos of the festival with special collaborative guests, bringing back an artist who played last year. She sounded great as well - better than I expected. (I can only imagine that she probably didn’t make much money from that set - with the entire cast of performers and stage production she brought along.)
I’ve seen complaints about it ending 5 minutes early - but I’m pretty sure it ended on time according to the most recent schedule. I did notice while trying to confirm that her set times bounced around quite a bit in the schedules that Newport uploaded. The original schedule I downloaded didn’t have the same times for her as the final schedule. As for starting 5 minutes late… oh well… Los Lobos also started 5 minutes late and went a few minutes over their final time (and nobody was complaining).
I do agree that some of the LDR fans sucked. We started the set in the pit and there was a lot of entitlement in the pit. Eventually moved back to our seats to get a second perspective and to get away from the crowds.
100% agree with this. I expected her to be just okay and thought she was really great, took me by surprise.

Watermelon Man opener was tight!
Songs of 1973
I got there in time for most of Crocodile Rock and stayed through Knockin on Heaven's Door. Really really fun, and i regret leaving early for Billy in retrospect. (I appreciate that he's talented or whatever, but boy does that music do absolutely nothing for me.)
Also worth noting that Leroy Brown was ft. John not Ian

Also, it looks like she broke out “Hope is a Dangerous Thing for a Woman Like Me to Have“ for only the second time ever it seems. I’m hoping this stays on the set list for Allthingsgo fest, where I plan to see her. That’s my favorite song of hers for sure. Not going to get my hopes up though (groan). Would be happy just for more of the “Norman Fucking Rockwell” album to be represented.

huh, i assumed the band was standard for her. that's what she did at Coachella anyway.
Yeah, Remi Wolf was great. I didn't know much about her before doing some listening prep the last few weeks but thought she put on an awesome show.
Bartees is a guy I've loved for years that i also thought killed it on Saturday, even without being able to play guitar. Got 2 different standing ovations mid-set from the crowd (who should be standing the whole time but whatever, i'm tired of complaining about those dumb chairs) and you could see in his face and through the reactions of the band how much it meant to him/them.
Willi Carlisle - Really love his music. Heartwarming, appropriately political without being too performative in the politics. His cover of "The Ballad of Penny Evans" was really great.
Goose - Carthatic. Lots of jam songs. 'Animal', a relatively new song, was a lot of fun. Felt joyful and sweaty. Fun Note - During Jason Isbell's set, Rick Mitaronda of Goose was hanging in the aisle at the fort right next to me for about 10 minutes. Was fun to watch fans recognize him and he was so gracious with selfies and the like. Was also fun to watch the overzealous volunteers tell him to stand behind the white line repeatedly.
Jupiter and Okwess - Once again they had the Quad jumping (literally.) Such a great party. Was happy to recommend them to a few folks on Sunday morning as I think it is rare for people to make the choice to see them if you don't know what kind of show they put on.

I def would have been at Jupiter and Okwess, they're a blast. They played the Kennedy Center Millenium Stage a few days before Newport, here's the full video:

Another Newport in the books. Overall, a good one with lots of fun music.
Highlights:
1) Lana Del Rey. As I stated in a previous post, I thought LDR’s set was incredible, offering both a touch of her full production and some intimacy, rawness, and collabs fit for a Newport set.
2) The Hold Steady. That was fun! Long time fan, first time seeing them. Better than even expected.
3) Jupiter & Okwess. It’s a shame they got the same Quad Stage set as last time - should have been elevated to the Fort for a massive dance party. But I made it into the front and enjoyed the feel of a rowdy club set.
4) The Beths. Came into this year’s fest with them in my Top 2 to see (having not listened to them before their announcement for Newport) and they did not disappoint.
Lowlights:
1) Noah Kahan canceling. He was my top act to see, and there were some moments where I was thinking of planning an alternative vacation to Newport and knowing I’d see him kept me fully set on attending. I have no ill feelings about the cancellation and the replacement was one only Newport could provide. I have tickets to see him in a 20,000+ person shed in the fall. But will miss the intimacy that only Newport could provide.
2) Congestion. I didn’t think it was any worse than last year, but both last year and this year felt worse attendance-wise than pre-Covid fests. It’s still enjoyable and the crowds are managed decent enough (this year was the first time I waited in longer lines for portapotties; and the beer gardens are too crowded to enjoy so another Newport without a single beer for me). But some of the Newport magic has definitely been removed with what’s seemingly an increase in capacity. (Also noticed way more people wearing badges this year thinking Newport gave out more guest passes to artists than normal.)
3) Special moments being saved for after parties. That John Prine tribute should not have been kept for just an after party. I don’t think this would be as concerning if it felt like the fest had those same moments, but it didn’t this year.
4) Missing collaborations in big time sets. I don’t need Joni or Paul every year. But it didn’t feel as if anyone really stepped into the Brandi or Margo roles this year. The artists around seemed to spend more time in the back partying than side stage watching or walking the fest. I felt like Mumford and Sons even better embodied the ethos when they pulled up Phoebe for a cover after catching her set earlier in the day.
100% agree with this. I expected her to be just okay and thought she was really great, took me by surprise.

I'm with the majority here. I don't know much about LDR and got a good spot to enjoy the unique experience and she blew me away. That last song (I didn't realize it was so rare to hear) had lyrics about her family being buried in Barrington which she told a story about. I thought it was everything that we would have wanted out of a headliner... big time act, unique setting, Newport reverence, dancers/storytelling etc. I thought it was really, really good.

My three favorite sets of the weekend all included a muppet as a special guest. I love this festival. Always a delight to discover new stuff and catch great sets from existing faves.
Main complaints for me are the traffic getting into the entrance gate each morning and getting out of the festival parking by car. Both of those really seem like they could use some major improvements. The lines are looooong. Also more/varied food vendors. There are good options already but more would help with lines and food choices. Everything else was mostly peachy for me.

Top 10:
1A. Tyler Childers (aftershow) 1B. The Hold Steady 1C. My Morning Jacket ----- 4. Remi Wolf 5. Lana Del Rey 6. Goose 7. Jason Isbell 8. The Beths 9. Los Lobos 10. Mdou Moctar
No order to my top 10: John Prine after party Willi Carlisle Lana Del Rey Goose Mdou Moctar Billy Strings Ron Gallo My Morning Jacket Remi Wolf Los Lobos

- I enjoyed LDR more than I expected. It took me a bit to adjust to the dancers, and all of that type of stuff often distracts me. That's on me. Her set seemed much shorter than I anticipated (even with acknowledging a slightly late start). - Willi Carlile was fantastic. I enjoyed his slight dig when asking if it was okay if he sang a traditional folk song, as he didn't see anyone doing any of that the day before. I don't need all the acts to include historical songs, but it feels much more lacking in recent years than when I first started attending in 2014. - Danielle Ponder - She fucking killed it. She's likely my favorite act of the festival - just laid it all out there and knocked it out of the park. I was bummed I didn't see her wandering the grounds as I hoped to talk to her (we're both from Rochester and have mutual friends but haven't met before). - Mdou Moctar was amazing. They were one of my top sets to check out heading into the festival, and they exceeded my expectations. - The Beths were another I was really into leading up to the festival, and they delivered. Elizabeth was a trooper, rushing back out after a quick breather. I forgot that it's wintertime down in NZ right now. BUT WHAT WAS THAT GIANT FISH ABOUT?!?! - Goose - I loved the festival sets I've seen of them, and this was no different. I need to get to an actual show of theirs! - MMJ - While I love them, I can get a bit unenthused by their sets, but they were on fire Friday night. Absolutely loved every second of it. - Margo Aftershow - It. Was. Amazing. I agree with a previous comment that it should have been a festival set (headliner?) given the number of people involved (Emmylou Harris catching the red-eye from Calgary for it!?!?!) - Billy - I fucking love BMFS. A few people felt disappointed by the set or the lack of sit-ins, but I loved every second of it. - Turnpike Troubadours - They may have been the sleeper of the festival for me. I've known of them for a while but never really gave a deep dive into them and hadn't seen them live before, but they seemed to be firing on all cylinders on Saturday and were easily one of the best sets I caught all weekend, even without the TC collab. - There are probably more, but I'm just going off the top of my head at the moment.
Honestly, having only scraped together tickets just last week, I hadn't listened to nearly as much of the lineup as I do in years past, and this year's lineup had way more acts that were pretty much entirely new to me. That said, I enjoyed it a ton as it reminded me of when I came to my first fest in 2014. I got exposed to so many acts I wasn't very familiar with and had a blast just wandering around with no set plans. I had a few sets I wanted to make sure I saw this year, but overall I just floated around the festival to catch bits of everything, and there were only one or two acts that I just couldn't get myself into.

So attendees at a festival designed to prioritize artist well being and (mental) health are judging a performer’s decision to not perform for health reasons?

No, I think they’re questioning the quick recovery time.
It was a bit disappointing to not get Kahan this weekend. But,
1. We did get James Taylor. Nice to pull a legend on short notice. 2. That conflict against MMJ was brutal. 3. I assume Kahan will be back, and actually headline. Perhaps next year.

What I find strange is the quick recovery for a potential career altering medical issue. I wish my physical/mental health crises ended in 24 hours.
