This a suggestion for all those who plan on doin' some serious imbibing at Bonnaroo.
If you surivive to the moring after, do yourself a favor and make sure you've packed some Pedialyte. You'll find it in the baby food aisle of any grocery store. Any hangover you've had will dissapear or diminish greatly. Also, you'll be replacing much needed electrolytes (Na and K) that you've destroyed by drinking too much alcohol. Still drink plenty of water as this is NOT a substitute for that.
Big props to Pantera (that's right Pantera) for this tip.
1/2 strength Gatorade is about the same thing as Pedialyte. May be cheaper when bought in the big cans.
Last year we took in small containers of Gatorade powder and an unopened gallon of water into the main stage area for our group (6-8 people). We mixed it up when we got in. I've heard it mixes well with rum too... ;D
Blaze all day, every day, each way the right way, my way green hay we high, been there, done that, big blunts fat sacks, hit it fast make it last, first class WE BLAZZE
As it was noted by Hobbes, it's unbelievable at rehydrating you after a long night of drinking. Personally (if coherent enough), I will drink down some before crashing.
A quart of Pedialyte, a couple ibuprofen, water, and some pasta is my personal recipe for my hangovers. It works 9/10 times...but the other 1/10 of the times, well...not much you can do for those!
Sure, it's probably not a whole lot more effective than Gatorade, but I've always had better luck with the Pedialyte myself.
Specifically, beverages like Pedialyte and Gatorade (which is very good with Tequila, good tequila not the shi**y American imports) replace electrolytes that your body loses during sweating, diahrea, colds, pretty much anythingt hat'll make your body lose fluids. Electrolytes are any compound that'll dissolve in water, break part into ions, and that'll conduct an electrical current. This is very important for your body to function. The primary electrolytes in your body are sodium and potassium which generate action potentials (electrical charges) in your nervous system and pretty much everywhere else in the body. That's one of the reasons dehydration is so dangerous. Without enough electrolytes your heart can't beat, your brain cannot regulate body temp. etc.
Gatorade is pretty much the same thing and will do just as well. Again, these are NO substitute for water and should NOT be used in place of water. I know it's been said many times on this board and elsewhere but please, everyone, keep hydrated. I'd hate to see someone hurt themselves from something preventable like heat stroke or heat exhaustion. love, luck, and lollipops.
p.s. this was a good review for my final tomorrow. thanks all.
fyi... pedialyte would be better than gatorade in a dehydrated state......gatorade is good for electrolytes but it has a lot of sugar which is an osmotic agent which will worsen diarrhea, thus exacerbate dehydration......so gatorade is good unless you are vomitting a lot or are experiencing diarrhea..... however, in my own defense i have not seen 1/2 strength gatorade before....i guess you could mix it 50:50 with water but then the electolyte profile isn't as good.....too much education my two cents.....and i took my final last year
Pedialyte has dextrose in it - isn't that a carb like glucose?
You are correct. The difference is the metabolism required before the substance can be absorbed. Dietary sugars have to be digested by pancreatic amylases and glycosidases before the body can absorb it. Dextrose is absorbable as is, I believe....there may need to be one step, but I don't think so. If sugar is not absorbed it osmotically holds water in the GI tract, thus diarrhea can occur.
This is really only a problem if you are sick, already have diarrhea, or are taking drugs that hype you up so you GI physiology isn't running properly. Just thought I would add it since someone already suggested the pedialyte which is what we recommend to parents for kids who are sick and dehydrated. Most folks give them gatorade which unfortunately usually adds to the discomfort of the kid and makes the dehydration worse.
Just trying to save some people a few trips to the beautiful porta-potties. :
no problem......glad to see all that seemingly worthless education finally benefiting someone......now if i would only do the things that i know i should do instead of the things that i enjoy doing.....oh well, such is life
