Also, taking an enormous L here because I listened to this today thinking it was an EP of new material but nope, just a repackaging of some Dierks Bentley songs from his last album because one of them was incredibly popular on TikTok. :\
Well. Dierks Bentley having a TikTok smash is not something I expected to hear.
lmao yeah it's with his song "Black" and it involves someone changing the video from color to black and white after the lyric "Make my world go black". Most of the videos are incredibly boring but if you want to see it for yourself here you go.
all over this thread. I like the punk leaning country best.
On a more serious note than the last time we exchanged pleasantries, I remember seeing the Hickoids back in like 85 or 86. Punk-country was a newer genre back then. Those guys were cool as shit to party with. And though the music wasn't the greatest thing ever, they always put on a fun show. I saw them a couple more times during the hardcore era after that.
Yeah often the spirit/heart is the most important part of a country punk outfit. Musical talent can catch up in this genre. Or as Ryan Adams sings in Whiskeytown's "Faithless Street", "so i started this damn country band. Cuz punk rock is too hard to sing". Where the driven angst gives way to ornery twanged out sardonicism with age.
Conversely, there is an everincreasing pool of diverse ubertalented musicians having emerged. So many forays as the subgenre matures, be them speedpickers like Split Lip Rayfield. Or Vaudvillian punks like the Legendary ShackShakers. Or purist/tribute with a lotta extra swagger like the Knoxville Girls. You can also have the smarmy Ray Stevensish turn of word type like Robbie Fulks. Or the reincarnation of Joe Strummer -country style -like John Langford and the Waco Brothers. Or the flat out musicianship of a band like the Sadies. Helluva a spectrum in such a tiny subgenre, which is why I peed my pants about your yuk yuk write off.

about to buy my 2 day ticket for this, it’s $50 so I can’t beat it. Excited to see Flatland and hopefully Josh Abbott will be better than it was last time I saw them.
Astonishingly, perhaps the best cover on the 10th anniversary edition of Born This Way is The Highwomen doing “Highway Unicorn (Road to Love)” with Brittney Spencer and Madeline Edwards:
I was looking at a Billboard piece on Black country artists recently and came across these two releases I enjoyed, first by Miko Marks & the Resurrectors, which has a pretty strong gospel influence...
...and the second, an EP by Tiera, which has more of a contemporary R&B influence.
Saw American Aquarium at Gruene Hall last night. I think they about blew the roof off the place, incredible first show back for me after a year and a half of no concerts. This morning I woke up feeling great that shows are back, then later in the day I saw this and got me all different types of excited:
Black country ? I'll play ! Aside from almost the whole genre being based(stolen) from music of color...
Big fan of R and B artist Andre " Shake a Tailfeather" Williams, who recorded a killer country album with the Sadies as his back up band. Here's a dark one from the album "Red Dirt". A cover of the Eddie Noack Classic "Psycho"
But for some real nuggets, check out the album "Like Nashville in Naija". In the mid to late 70s, Nigeria was experiencing liberation from civil war, as well as a booming oil economy. This elicited a wave of American expat activity, as well as a huge trend of music in Nigeria emulating American disco, funk, country, etc.
not really a fan of the new Cassadee Pope; it’s hard to describe but I feel like the vocal production is way too clean when contrasted with the very often pop-punk/metal-inspired instrumentals. It’s like her vocal takes were copy/pasted on different songs and I find it pretty distracting.
I’ve been enjoying the new Charley Crockett lately though:
Was dropping food off today listening to that Morgan Wade album. I keep forgetting how much I like it. She fits swell in that Sarah Shook territory if they were more pop.
Found out today she was from Floyd, VA and completely blown away. Glad to see someone that actually got out of that one stoplight town.

She was on the Bonnaroo lineup, right? I was looking forward to her set.

I missed it if she was. She got announced for FloydFest today which let to a bunch’s “YOU COMING?!?” texts, which in turn got me to put this on again.
the gosh darn turnpike troubadours are back and i could not be happier.
this literally made my year when it got announced. me and a buddy have already agreed that we're going to whatever their first show back is (since they're gonna do shows before Red Rocks allegedly).
I mentioned on here I saw Hailey Whitters a couple of weeks ago but I want to mention her opener here: Michele McGuire, who's from Chicago and mostly does solo acoustic songs (but accompanied with drums live). She's got a good sense of humor in her songwriting and definitely worth checking out:
shuck don’t know if you collect vinyl but Hailey has signed copies of her new album up for pre-order. only $25 pre-shipping so i’ll probably grab it after i send this:

After two shows this weekend in Tulsa, Turnpike Troubadours are officially back. I’ve been watching any video I can that gets uploaded from last weekend but I keep coming back to this one:
I’m so happy to see Evan happy and healthy and the band sounds really fucking good. Hope I get to see them soon.
