Biography: "Pinegrove is an American rock band formed in Montclair, New Jersey in 2010. The band's lineup is variable, with singer-songwriter Evan Stephens Hall and drummer Zack Levine representing its "core" members. The two met in childhood and played in various bands before founding Pinegrove. The band's musical style, which utilizes instruments such as the banjo and pedal steel guitar, is commonly described as a fusion between alternative country and emo. Pinegrove spent its early years self-releasing its music—including their debut album, Meridian, in 2012—and performing do-it-yourself (DIY) house shows.
After signing to independent record label Run for Cover, the group issued an anthology of their early work, titled Everything So Far (2014). Their second album, Cardinal (2016), represented a breakthrough, amassing a devoted fan listenership and appearing on many music critics' top-ten year-end lists. After recording their third full-length, Skylight, the band took a year-long hiatus after Hall was accused of "sexual coercion" by an anonymous person with whom he had a relationship. Skylight saw proper release in 2018, and was followed by several sold-out tours. The band signed to British label Rough Trade for their fourth effort, Marigold, released in 2020.
Pinegrove are known for their literary lyricism and loyal following of fans, which refer to themselves as "Pinenuts". The band's name comes from a prominent pine tree row on a nature reserve where Hall attended college. The group is known for their geometric iconography, specifically utilizing square shapes, and usage of the ampersand (&) in artwork and merchandise. Pinegrove are also known for their alignment with progressive causes, including charitable contributions to civil rights organizations.
Major Discography: The major albums by the artist, not the EPs or LPs or any of that stuff. If the act has been around for a while, has released a bunch of albums and you don't want to list them all, then only include the important ones. This part is totally optional" - Wiki
"Everything So Far" -2014
"Cardinal" - 2016
"Skylight" - 2018
"Marigold" - 2020
Genre: Alt-Country / Math Rock / Indie Americana
Similar Artists: Big Thief, The Hotelier, Slaughter Beach, Dog
Similar Bonnaroo Artists: ehh not really anyone
Of the three albums they've released, I think I would rank them 1. Cardinal 2. Marigold 3. Skylight. Marigold, which was just released two weeks ago, was not my favorite at first but has really begun to grow on me. It has one song called "Moment" that has been in my heads for weeks. Skylight was recorded before the hiatus but was not released until after the band returned.
Physical Reaction/Live Show
I have not had the opportunity to see these guys yet. I had tickets for the tour that got cancelled when the allegations happened back in 2017. I know they have a very dedicated fanbase and since they are aligned with the emo genre, they will most likely have hundreds of dedicated fans singing the lyrics back to them. A lot of their songs are slower, but I imagine their live show will have some decent energy to it. Should be a great late afternoon tent set.
When I discovered this band in early 2017, they were one of my favorite discoveries in a long time. This was right before their accusations came out. While it sucks that anything happened at all, it seems that the parties involved have worked everything out. If you want to read any more about the accusations, THIS is a pretty lengthy and expansive article that describes in detail what happened and how the band has dealt with the situation. Definitely worth a read. As someone who's favorite bands have been bands like Foxing and the Wonder Years, I've been wanting Bonnaroo to book more of the punk/emo genre for a while and this booking is something that I think a bunch of different groups should be able to enjoy.
