Does anyone that’s not a MMJ super fan actually want them to play late night? There’s plenty of good late night tent options that day. I don’t really get why a indie/soft rock band would be preferable at 2am. I’d probably catch them for a bit if they play afternoon/sunset on What or dusk on Which, but I highly doubt I would see them late night over Superjam/Marc Rebillet/Goose/JID/Ashnikko/Yaeji/UncleAcid/Remi Wolf
Is calling Jacket an “indie soft rock band” not a banable offense?!?!
i know anecdotal experiences are worth nothing, but i just did four nights of Phish in various sold out outdoor venues across the south and i feel great. i'll let y'all know if i get covid.
you know what i didn't know i missed? the communal experience of the crowd. i saw many many amazing things these past four shows, but the best part of the whole experience was 10,000+ fans singing the lyrics to "Sleeping Monkey" in last night's encore. teary-eyed and smiling just thinking about it.
i know there is a lot of fear right now, and while i think around here that fear is a little too much, i still respect anyone's decision to hold off on returning to live music. but also try and remember how joyful and rejuvenating live music is. mental health is health. i didn't know how much i needed this experience until i experienced it.
The thing that’s been hard for me so far is that I find myself having a hard time fully relaxing into it. I love losing myself in that vibe you’re talking about, but I’ve been to two shows this year (Foos at the Garden, vax required, Bright Eyes at Forest Hills, no vax required), and I’ve found I have a really hard time fully relaxing. Like, there’s that trauma voice in the back of my head waving its arms and shouting, “THIS IS WEIRD AND WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENS???”
I hope I’ll be able to work through that at Roo, because it really diminished both experiences for me to some degree.
totally understandable feeling, and one that will vary from person to person.
i never 100% stopped thinking about it, but the "this is weird and what if something happens" was strongest in the first show, then i was much more relaxed in the second show at oak mountain and even moreso once in alpharetta since it's an easier venue to move around in than oak mountain (so if things got a little too crowdy i could just move, which i tend to do regardless of pandemic anyway).
and all the shows were outside and all had pretty decent breezes which helped with my comfort level.
i also did something i've never done before which is excercise pre show. helped with my anxiety and sleep i think.
MMJ is equal parts indie/folk/alt country/jam/psych/soft rock
🎶 This is ten percent folk, twenty percent alt, fifteen percent concentrated power of soft/Five percent indie, fifty percent jam, and a hundred percent reason to remember the band 🎵
My Morning Jacket 2015 set was one of the most relentless sets I’ve seen at Bonnaroo. Just straight heat the entire show
It’s always stuck in my brain that Jim didn’t say a word to the crowd that whole show. They just ripped through that set
which is funny, because while I’ve never seen MMJ, I saw Jim James solo during a get out the vote concert in 2018, where I mostly remember him making constant inane political observations, having an electric guitar prominently on stage that he never used, and wearing the rattiest pair of new balances I’ve ever seen. What a guy.

Yeah I was gonna add that his banter can be a little cringey and pull me out of their shows
y'all sure there was no banter at MMJ 2015? feel like i remember Jim James spending a significant portion of the show trying to determine which side of the crowd was louder/more lit.
Garth Brooks had a full house at Nissan Stadium over the weekend, the only press coverage about it was that it got postponed due to storms.
so the thunder rolled and the lightning striked ?
during the delay everyone was 100% convinced that would be the set opener when he eventually came out, but alas. Hopefully it's the opener for the rescheduled date

I listened to most of the Roo 2015 show that’s on YouTube and it was fine but at no point did it feel “relentless”, they’re probably just not my thing. I did Jamie XX -> Atomic Bomb instead of MMJ and don’t regret it. Would also rather do Belle and Sebastian -> SBTRKT which was also an option during that time slot.

It's accepted inforoo canon that jamie xx > atomic bomb was the correct move.

I did Belle and Sebastien -> Atomic Bomb. That was a great afternoon.
