No Fawn I did not try for the membership. The first year it was offered I went to the booth, thought it over and decided it would be best to hold off (after all I never had problems getting tickets in the past). I still don't regret that decision though I think it's a positive thing for NFF as well as the fans who want to take advantage of it.
I think the Lyte system is a really effective way for a Fest to keep the tickets affordable for the attendees. I'm grateful we have that system in place though I would really love to hear from someone who was wayyyy far down on the list last year and got in haha. From what others have said it seems like the Lyte numbers are way higher at this time this year than they were at the same time last year.
Yep. Last year I didn’t sign up for Lyte until early evening and started at #511. This year we signed probably less than 30 minutes after it went live and are 800 and something..... not feeling very hopeful, tbh, even though we have moved up a few spots. If we make it this year, I think we’ll definitely go the membership route, even though we’ve said that the past 2 years and never have made the time to go to the tent.
We are up to 12 Bingo entries (including my own which doesn't count.) There is a chance that today could be the first artist announcement so if you have an entry waiting to be sent, go ahead and send it over.
Now that we're almost in announcement season, what are peoples thoughts on headliners for this year?
If Deer Tick are closing things out on Sunday I have a feeling that could be the first announcement we get, a la If I Had a Song
I still think that one of the other spots goes to the Dixie Chicks. They just make too much sense after the last couple years, but who knows how much they care about Newport
So if it's DC on Friday and DT on Sunday, it'd seem like Saturday is set up for either an "indie" artist (Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, MMJ, Lana?) or a classic name (Neil, Van, Emmylou)
I could also see a wild card like Tedeschi Trucks Band, but that would feel like a weird top 3 for Newport imo

Can this festival afford TTB. I’m not sure. Although it’d be nice.

I feel like we're headed towards closing collaboration sets for all three days, something I'm 100% in favor of.
If it’s three nights of collaborations, as long as one of them is a fuzzy jam sesh featuring Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, boygenius, Ty Segall, Steve Gunn, War on Drugs, Kevin Morby, Snail Mail, Soccer Mommy, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, Japanese Breakfast, et al. And they can all just try to outfuzz one another.

I think those headliner seem reasonable. I'd probably swap Van the Man for Bonnie Raitt, not sure if I could see Van playing Newport.
I have a hard time gauging who is a headliner, but I would think Lana would fall into that St. Vincent closing the quad spot. I think she would be a good fit, she has incorporating some classic folk songs this tour.

Yeah that's kind of what I was figuring for Lana, the intersection between her audience and Newport's isn't enough to make her a headliner.
I don't know if this is the year but I'd definitely be in favor of her coming in and doing a set with just a piano and/or guitar
As much as enjoyed and appreciated the Highwomen and Dolly, I would like to see a little less of what I would consider "country" music. I really miss the more experimental, global, indie genres.

Same, and I think the last two years have featured most of the notable 'alt-country' names right now, so I'd hope we get a bit of a breather
I do think we'll get some though. Tanya Tucker will almost definitely be there. Dixie Chicks, Orville Peck, Brent Cobb, and John Moreland are all country names I'd be excited for. Also The Lone Bellow if you consider them country
But yeah, I feel like that base has been covered and the left-field folk world has been a little overshadowed lately
Give me some Big Thief, Joanna Newsom, Kikagaku Moyo, Juan Wauters, Grizzly Bear, William Tyler/Ryley Walker/Steve Gunn, etc. Would love to see someone like James Blake do a solo piano set. U.S. Girls just announced some shows with 7 singers, that'd be a very cool Newport booking. Get Bonnie 'Prince' Billy back in some form. More soul and hip-hop bookings would also make me happy.

Definitely agree that they got lots of the big 'alt-country' in 2018 and 2019. I'd still be happy with some of the fresher faces like Ian Noe, Katie Pruitt, Kelsey Waldon and Sierra Ferrell. I also hope they lean more into indie and soul next year. I think Durand Jones and the Indications would be a big hit and Big Thief is a proven hit. Maybe Leon will come back if he has some new material?

I would be happy with everyone you've listed except Tanya Tucker and the Dixie Chicks!
Saw Crooked Still in Cambridge tonight. They said that they all have no other plans, and that they are looking to do more shows soon. Hopefully NFF nails this down! They were excellent tonight!

It's weird they said that since Brittany Haas will be doing shows with Hawktail in the new year.
