Is it just me, or is it usually that the most hardcore anti-gay people are...well, gay?
It seems to be that way. But you kind of have to remember that for a LOT of people who are hardcore anti-gay and super religious they don't view it as "this is who I am but I must deny it". They view homosexuality as a choice and believe it's the devil tempting them and so even if they get urges or feelings they have to push it down and fight against it.
But yeah....the type of politicians who pass and push laws against the gay community who then turn out to be gay later down the line is really frustrating. Like a lot of the retired Republicans who are going all in on the weed industry after years of making people's lives hell for using it.
Is it just me, or is it usually that the most hardcore anti-gay people are...well, gay?
I know you don't mean this at all but I was going to say something about this anyway, so this gave me a jumping off point for my comment.
I hate that this will reinforce the idea that anti gay politicians are actually closeted gay men. It kinda feels like blaming homophobia on gay people. Most homophobic people actually just hate gay people and think they shouldn't have rights.

For sure. There's been examples in my personal life of homophobic people turning out be gay, so just an observation there.
Gay people, black people, trans people...why do so many people gotta hate on people different from themselves? I will never understand it.
There was a protest today in Providence, which some have said was largest demonstration in RI's history when an estimated 10k people came out.
I left just before 7, the curfew was at 9, and it's only now winding down. The cops basically just followed behind a march for over an hour and a half.
So early on in the protest, there was a march to the State House. I seen a TV news crew nearby for Channel 10, the top rated news in PVD. Its also owned by Sinclair, the right wing pro-Trump propaganda network.
So, I yelled "Fuck Trump" live on the 5 o'clock news.
I was curious about what the science has to say about homophobia being an expression of repressed homosexuality, and there seems to be a bit of truth to it but it's definitely not the rule. One oft-cited study demonstrates that about 20% of people who identify as "highly straight" actually harbor some same-sex attraction, and those people are indeed significantly more likely to express hostility towards LGBT people and policies. So basically yeah it's a thing but it's not something we should assume.
I think it seems more common than it actually is because there are so many people who are just homophobes their entire lives and it's not noteworthy - it's the ones who get outed that stand out.

I have a question regarding Graham for LGBT members of the board, which is:
Is it acceptable and correct for myself as a straight person to feel schaudenfreude concerning his being outed, or is that some latent homophobia that I should investigate? Or is it just not something I should really express thoughts on at all?
My sense is that because he has damaged so many other gay peoples' lives, his hypocrisy is ironic and disgustingly self-serving, and I want to see him be publicly humiliated by being exposed.
That's probably a clunky way to ask but I was curious because I've seen some subtweeting about how at least some straight people have reacted.
Coming out fucking sucks in the moment. The kicker is that those moments never really stop. He should have been able to do it on his own terms (if at all).
I ain't gonna shame him for being gay or hiring sex workers. Neither should you. If somebody had outed me as ace without my permission (which is still a distinct possibility given how my parents treat the trust I give them), I'd be PRETTY FUCKING PISSED about it.

Just got back home from a rally here in Anchorage, AK. I expected it to be pretty peaceful which thankfully it was, with a route already preplanned. The march was pretty respectful of traffic at first but on the last leg, the crowd pretty much stopped paying attention to the crosswalk. Only other disruptive thing I saw was a pizza delivery guy trying to cut through the crowd crossing the crosswalk at an intersection and some douche started jumping up and down on his car. I did not see ONE cop car throughout the march. Supposedly they backed off and just stayed around the perimeter of downtown which was probably the smart move.
But tomorrow there's another rally in an outside town called Palmer and that might not go as smoothly. It's a smaller conservative town filled with wannabe rednecks and the FB comments were filled with hate pretty early on about the event. A local militia group said they're going to show up to "backup" the local police if things get out of hand. These guys are just itching for a fight.

One thing that I have noticed the last week or so, there's a lot of protests going on in rural and suburban towns with mostly white populations. And people are going to them, in numbers unseen before. Which is a good thing, even in spite of the dangers of being around higher percentages of rabid conservatives. Speaks to the fact that you can find allies anywhere, though in a bunch of places they're outnumbered.
DC isn't a state, so it's under the federal jurisdiction. So you're seeing National Guard members getting sent there from Republican led states, as well as officers from various departments under the executive branch. I think federal prison guards, ICE agents, border patrol, and some others are these unlabeled patrols.
It's sort of hard to articulate why I am happy that he is being exposed, but the easiest way to explain is just that I want to see him destroyed and I know that the people he has aligned himself with will now ostracize him. At the same time, those people all suck, too, so fuck them. If Graham would have a mea culpa, apologize, and remove himself from public life, perhaps that would be the best possible outcome. Ultimately, though, he can't undo what he's done, and I can't imagine him doing a full turn and becoming an advocate. Even if he tried, he would be ineffective as such.
I think the "homophobic people are secretly gay" idea is clearly true in some cases, like this one, but it simply doesn't hold up to logical scrutiny that a large portion of homophobic people are gay people who hate themselves, while a majority of straight people are fine with it. If not for the societal judgment and pressures of the straight majority, I don't know what reason these people would have to feel bad about who they are in the first place.

I know his policies have hurt a lot of people but to live a lie doesn't seem self serving to me. My boss is a closeted homosexual who shows off as a republican and I think a lot about how hard it must be for him to keep up the charade. I don't have any real knowledge on the subject but there are a lot of people who aren't out and I hope they might see the news and think their true feelings are ok.
I mean self-serving in the sense that he's gained a tremendous amount of power in part by denying who he is publicly and hurting others like him. I agree that despite that success he's probably extremely tortured and even though I don't think he really deserves my empathy here, I do feel bad for him in that aspect. I'm soft like that. I wouldn't want him to, for example, commit suicide, which I imagine is a very real possibility.
Okay so does this Lindsay Graham story have any official sources yet? Like we've all suspected this for years but why is everyone getting all worked up places like here and Twitter when it hasn't been reported anywhere else. Far as I can see even reddit really hasn't picked up on it yet, so until any of that happens I don't know why you would think this would impact his reelection at all.

Update: I didn’t go to the Palmer rally but the militia was called off last minute so everything went smoothly.
There was another rally in Anchorage today but it was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and I noped out of that one after looking into what this group is about. From what I’ve seen, this party has actually organized a lot of the rallies nationwide and I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’m non-partisan so I don’t usually partake in events organized by political parties but PSL definitely seems too extreme for me.

The person making the claims is on Twitter. @seanhardingxxx It's not being reported because he hasn't spoken with the media yet. He just posted today saying he's still working on getting a lawyer because he claims he and the two others that will come forward all signed NDAs. After that's worked out he'll be talking to the media. I have no clue if that's true at all but it would seem the NDA's would be pretty damaging proof on their own.
I think it could harm his primary, maybe? If the story is out before then. I doubt it would harm him in the general.
The Confederacy rebelled against and declared war on America. Dedicating so much to this flag and to those statues that people hold so dear would be like having a tribute to Saudi America at the World Trade Center or honoring Japanese fighter pilots in Pearl Harbor.
When you see the confederate flag showing up to a number of protests and rallies and other things where they clearly have no reason to be then the purpose is clear - it's a racist dog whistle. They are sending a message to non-white people. Fuck the confederate flag. Fuck statues of Confederate war "heroes". This country needed to do the same kind of restitution that Germany did following the Nazis. But instead we swept it under the rug, acted like things were better, and let it fester for decades.
