Just got back home from a rally here in Anchorage, AK. I expected it to be pretty peaceful which thankfully it was, with a route already preplanned. The march was pretty respectful of traffic at first but on the last leg, the crowd pretty much stopped paying attention to the crosswalk. Only other disruptive thing I saw was a pizza delivery guy trying to cut through the crowd crossing the crosswalk at an intersection and some douche started jumping up and down on his car. I did not see ONE cop car throughout the march. Supposedly they backed off and just stayed around the perimeter of downtown which was probably the smart move.
But tomorrow there's another rally in an outside town called Palmer and that might not go as smoothly. It's a smaller conservative town filled with wannabe rednecks and the FB comments were filled with hate pretty early on about the event. A local militia group said they're going to show up to "backup" the local police if things get out of hand. These guys are just itching for a fight.
Update: I didn’t go to the Palmer rally but the militia was called off last minute so everything went smoothly.
There was another rally in Anchorage today but it was organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) and I noped out of that one after looking into what this group is about. From what I’ve seen, this party has actually organized a lot of the rallies nationwide and I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’m non-partisan so I don’t usually partake in events organized by political parties but PSL definitely seems too extreme for me.

PSL is one of a bunch of small socialist groups that are around the country. They organize events, but their footprint only looks bigger because they have small but dedicated memberships in various cities.
Which leads me to my next comment: there's too many socialist and far-left political parties/groups. What does exist now is fractured, to the point where they're all clubs more than anything else. This includes the Greens, Socialist Alternative, PSL, Communists, and a bunch of others. I've even seen entire groups just drop affiliations with one in a city and switch to another - such as when Socialist Alternative's chapters in Worcester, Providence, and New Hampshire abandoned it and became the Independent Socialist Group. Other than small scale local organizing and education, they're really ineffective.

What's extreme about revolutionary marxism?
Look around you
Read some theory
A lot of people don't seem to realize what it would actually take to change the police state. You are directly threatening one of the main domestic control mechanisms of the capitalist system. There really isn't much compromising with it. Which is why not falling for any co-opting bullshit like 8 Can't Wait is extremely important if you want anything to actually change.
The Confederacy rebelled against and declared war on America. Dedicating so much to this flag and to those statues that people hold so dear would be like having a tribute to Saudi America at the World Trade Center or honoring Japanese fighter pilots in Pearl Harbor.
When you see the confederate flag showing up to a number of protests and rallies and other things where they clearly have no reason to be then the purpose is clear - it's a racist dog whistle. They are sending a message to non-white people. Fuck the confederate flag. Fuck statues of Confederate war "heroes". This country needed to do the same kind of restitution that Germany did following the Nazis. But instead we swept it under the rug, acted like things were better, and let it fester for decades.

Usually the NYT is hella suspect, but listen to the latest episode of the Popcast. They have two of the editors from the Source on talking about the 92 riots. It's really eye opening

I damn near punched my dad tonight.
Shit, I STILL wanna slug the motherfucker.
We got into a heated argument about BLM at dinner when he tried to pull the "did you know you're more at risk of death by cop than a young black male?"
Me:
Do I know
Do I fucking know
WHO DOES THIS MAN THINK HE'S TALKING TO?!
I've known since I was 16 and I was stopped a block from my house. The cop asked what I was doing here. I told him I lived a block over. He responded with "Alright." And the way he said that? Man, it was obvious as fuck he was spoiling for something.
I've known when I had to explain to my friend we had to watch for cops on the way to a concert. Why? We were underage and had those Coke cans that looked like tallboys (and then I was sexually assaulted at the show). The concept of "too careful" doesn't exist for me.
I've known after getting stopped by security every year at Lolla, Boston Calling and Pitchfork and shows in Columbia and KC.

My dad was apparently telling all of his side of the family (and my mom and whoever) they should watch the Mark Levin special episode thing on Fox News tonight because he had on some black guys and they would be talking about "everything going on right now". I am sure I will see in a few days that it was ridiculous. I refuse to watch it.

i have no idea what's going to come out of the mpls city council but with a veto proof majority it won't be half baked. my political engagement is on a local level is primarily focused on urban planning and the amount of detail that was involved in minneapolis 2040 is astounding, i encourage anyone with those interest to read through the 1.2k pdf... i know we're capable of creating forward thinking policy but we're constrained by many factors.
the main issue i see coming is the budget problems due to covid. work from home has and will continue to destroy our tax base, and when undertaking a transition like this there needs to be an initial budgetary expansion to account for all the unknowns. 12% of 1.6 billion which is given to the police is not enough without support from the county, state, feds. the best chance that we have for this to be successful is for biden to be elected (ugh) alongside congress taking measures of reforming and then federal funds that go towards militarization of the police to be redistributed along with reforming police nationwide
There’s been all this drama from the Denver protests being co-opted by this new group With no history of activism here and which is supposedly working with the mayor and Denver police. Anyway, Brace just tweeted the eye about it so I hope Truanon exposes them. That twitter thread has more info if you wanna read about how @wearelovedenver took over our protests.
By the way, probably a good lesson for everyone. Be careful who you let lead you in these times. Find your local people with a history of activism.

One of my biggest fears is that when I get old I'll be this utterly out of touch.
I truly believe they mean well but just...nahhhh
I thought I was going to get more conservative as I got older but the republicans stopped that from happening. I think it's natural and expected that our generation will be more "in touch" than the last couple have. How in touch will we be in our 60s compared to the 18 year olds of that time? There will probably still be a gap but I doubt we'll be this bad.
I am strangely excited to see Trump's attempt at a speech to calm and unify the nation.
My fellow Americans,
I am your supreme ruler and commander. Now is the time for the nation to unify behind me, the military, and law enforcement throughout the country. Together we will make America great again.
If you choose to disobey, you will be labeled as an antifa terrorist and be disappeared - either detained or executed - at secret locations throughout the country.
