The last couple weeks have had the highest number of people turn out for protests I've seen, except maybe the original Women's marches in 2017. There's people who I've never seen had a shred of interest in activism before and all of a sudden are talking Black Lives Matter and thinking about going to local actions.
The high number of unemployed and furloughed citizens are making it possible. Which also means that the protests could go on all summer.
Does anyone have any resources on locating protests in nearby cities? I live in a college town which is much more empty now because of Covid. We have a pretty large peaceful protest/march on Saturday but it's been quiet since then. I'm sure I could just drive to the nearest larger city (~1.5 hours), but I'd be more confident if I knew something was organized
the protests are extremely decentralized nationwide so just try local subreddits and facebook pages, try to find twitter pages of local activists that are on the ground and gauge how things are going. when things initially started organizing, it was largely offline and snapmaps was a great resource.

By "snapmaps" are you referring to snapchat? Thanks for responding, its helpful. I think I'm going to head to Orlando this week / weekend because its only a couple hours away and I used to live there so I have places to crash
This is interesting, no curfew or cop lineup tonight in Kansas City. Wonder if the cops will listen? I'm on my way home from work, Mill Creek Park is 2 blocks away from my house.
Follow up from my front porch: Cop presence slightly reduced. No lines with riot shields, and they are ushering the march to stay in the flow of traffic. Cops with rifles still present but staying in vans not on the street. If the KC cops got an F for the last two nights I'd at least give them a D+ tonight. Slightly better so far but it's only 9pm. Why did it take 4 nights to come up with this idea?

yea snapchat. be safe, looks like theres something planned for saturday at lake eola park but its important to know who the organizers are so they have proper crowd control mechanisms. also the piggys just went out to play down there

Orlando cops are terrible, at least when I lived there. All the more reason to protest there. Thank you, sincerely. I also found a vigil tomorrow night where I live on my towns reddit.
Really not sure how any of this gets better anytime soon.
I was preoccupied yesterday and only glanced at some of the headlines, but I was able to spend a little time with it this afternoon. Essentially Barr ordered the military to move in to clear peaceful protesters so that the president could get to the other side of the park in front of an episcopal church uninvited for a photo op of him holding up a bible just after talking tough shit talk. The bar has never been lower but that’s pretty blatant. Helicopters horses tear gas on people all while simultaneously insulting Christianity and our first amendment rights to peacefully protest. This shit’s gotta go.

Gotta be honest, not convinced King losing the primary is a good thing. I think this way Republicans still keep the seat rather than a Dem beating King. Glad there’s no chance he stays in office though.
Plus, are very vocal racists worse than “dog whistle” racists? The same message is getting across to those who want to hear it but at least King served as direct, irrefutable proof of the racism of the GOP. Propping up a dogwhistle allows it to sort of stew in the darkness.

This is my first thought as well. King was an electoral liability, and that's part of why the Rs supported his challenger. If they've increased their chances of keeping that seat, this is no victory.
I also agree on the second point. I'd appreciate if all politicians were as open about what they thought as King. It's analogous to the Southern Wolf as opposed to Northern Fox that Malcolm X spoke about. If someone's ideology is hateful, I'd rather they let me know. A lot of people are telling on themselves these past few days, and I'd say that the main accomplishments so far of the volume of protests, aside from the murderer's arrest and charge (which is a half-measure as three officers have not been arrested and the charge is limp as fuck), have been to show people who the police are and also who is comfortable with them murdering Black people and attacking protestors with impunity.

On top of that, it allows Rs to pretend that they are not tolerating racism within their party by voting out King. "Look! We voted out the obvious shithead. Racism has no place in the GOP. Pay no attention to his replacement fawning over Trump's racist policies. That's not important."

Are we sure King would have lost in the general? That part of Iowa he represented is deep red.

Yeah, King seems to have lost because Feenstra argued effectively that the House GOP stripping King of his committee assignments meant that King could not be an effective enough pro-Trump voice in the House. I agree there's value to someone's views being out in the open, but there's also a platform that comes with a House seat, and it's probably good that he's out of that.

he only won in 2018 by 3% and with voters unhappy due to steve king not having any committee assignments there was a good but not certain chance that he would have lost. farmers like most people arent doing great right now and a sidelined rep. is a big deal
"The City of Philadelphia removed a statue of the former mayor Frank Rizzo, who aggressively policed black and gay people in the '60s and ’70s, after protesters tried to take it down. Mayor Jim Kenney said it was "the beginning of the healing process of our city."
One of the positive things I have seen with the recent unrest are these stories of monuments that should have been removed years ago getting taken down.
Boston’s protest yesterday was incredible. Tons of people, absolutely no violence from the protestors, and just an incredible atmosphere overall. I have no idea if it was covered at all nationally because there wasn’t all that much that might be “interesting” to national news stations but it really was just fantastic.

I had a similar line of thought about Trump being the nominee providing an easy win in 2016. That worked out well.

Didn't know much about it, since all anyone cares to talk about is that Dunks in Brockton
wasn't sure where else to post this, but the catholic high school i attended, in Very Conservative Mobile, Alabama, had a ceiling mural depicting the flags that have flown over Mobile, including the U.S., British, Spanish, French, and Confederate flags. They just painted over the Confederate flag.
i know it's a teeny tiny symbolic thing done too late, but it's still a good thing, and it made me a little emotional reading about it.

That DA needs a goddamn raise. Let's get this shit going.
I so badly want to attend a protest this weekend, but my fiancée is a private teacher for a family where the mom is a surgeon. The mom has mentioned concerns about COVID-19 spread before this all broke out.

I’m waiting to see what happens in a week with COVID and if there is a huge uptick in cases. It’s not like I can do anything right now anyway. Hard to run from cops and tear gas with a fucking cane. And not like they would give a shit I had one.
He's a Vols fan. His whole life is hopes and dreams.
As a side note, you have seen that we have officially moved to the "Our coach and staff are such good recruiters! We're totally winning the East this year!! #govols" portion of Pruitt's tenure, correct?

As is the theme for this year, I got my moment of positivity after the announcement re: the other three officers and upgraded charges. Then, I notice on my feed how the CNN article adds, "says Sen. Klobuchar" to the end. This immediately makes me worry that, between this and the civil rights investigation being opened against the MPD, the groundwork is being laid for Klobuchar's bonafides to be Biden's VP.
