Members: The Man himself, Andrew Charles White (Tonstartssbandht), Joe McMurray, Jon Lent, Alec Meen
Biog: Canadian. Started as part of Makeout Video tape (noise/punk band, toured with Japandroids), went solo and released Rock and Roll Night Club. Label liked it and gave him a shot at a full length, 2, which was a big hit with the indie world. Followed up with Salad Days, an even bigger hit, and launched him into the stratosphere of upper-mid card billing. Another One followed, and while not as hot of an item, Mac had fun with it. He invited over fans to a BBQ listening party, and at the end of the album added his home address, eventually chillin' with a few dozen fans. He picked things back up with This Old Dog most recently, well received and more polished, adding new sounds, and wrapped up that tour last year. This year he has recorded songs about how the Toronto Raptors can't win in the playoffs ('Fuck the Toronto Raptors') and a Christmas tune ('The Christmas Song'), along with some other covers here and there.

Sounds Like:
Lo-fi, indie rock. Borders between the 'psychedelic' and 'yacht' variety. Self proclaimed 'Jizz Jazz' artist.
Similar Artists: Ariel Pink, Beach Fossils, Weyes Blood, Sandy Alex G, Kirin J Callinan, DIIV
Choice Nugs: Moonlight on the River (This Old Dog, Pitchfork Live)
KEXP (Salad Days stuff, Chamber of Reflection is probably my favorite after Moonlight from above)
For all the Steely Fan's out there...
Ode to Viceroy (2, from Bonnaroo's 'Mom Meet the Band' - 2013)
Live: Very chill, definition of vibezz. Fun banter, generally at least kind of drunk. Chain smoking cigs, the whole set. You're gonna get covers, he's been doing Misfits alot, Enter Sandman gets a lot of play, I saw Reelin' in the years and it was great. Yes, there's a too long bit cover of Vanessa Carlton (you know the one) that may show up, but just check setlist FM if you're curious, he covers a lot of ground. I happened to see him while standing in a stadium parking lot, but it's great sit in the back and lay on a blanket music. There should be little to no moshing, there will be a weird mix of awkward dorks and super bros, Mac's for everyone, no judgements. He/the band crowd surfs, sometimes he brings couches/friends up on stage to hang through the set. It's not a Phish show, but there's enough variety between his touring, the fucking around on stage, and with the covers if you havent seen him since This Old Dog came out, it should be pretty different this time around. Not much on lights (I saw him mid day at it was perfect), so I'd expect it to be during the day, approaching sunset seems perfect. Expecting a tent, don't think he's quite big enough to be on the What at all, but he could probably do decent on the which, depending on what time it is.
Good write up. I might check him out as I've never seen his live set before. If he's up against King Princess, Two Feet or The Wood Brothers then I have a decision to make.
Probably the best show i saw last year, up there with Macca at ACL. They performed for nearly 3 hours. Blasted drunk covers of Michael Jackson, Beatles, Vanessa Carlton, Sixpense None the Richer, Black Sabbath and Red Hot Chili Peppers, just to name a few. Crowdsurfing to balconies, diving ensued. It was absurdly awesome. They definitely wont perform that long at Roo but it’ll be great regardless. Hoping for a Late Night set in a tent.

Iirc he played the Enter Sandman cover to end his Roo 2015 set (though I might be thinking of Portugal doing For Whom the Bell Tolls). One of the bright spots for sure on a pretty rough Sunday

fwiw Mac > Two Feet from my experience seeing them live.

Mac DeMarco is Blink-182 levels of stage banter. Had a blast at his set at Shaky Knees 2015, been waiting for a chance to see him again ever since. This Old Dog was a fantastic album. Should be a fun Sunday set
He’s a consistently fun and ridiculous show, for sure. If he doesn’t conflict with Cardi, Brandi, or Princess, I’ll probably be there, in which case he’ll definitely help improve a somewhat barren Sunday. Unfortunately, I fear the odds of conflicting with one of them is high.

If you take away the nostalgia factor then yes he is much better live than Blink-182. I was just comparing their stage banter, because they both made me laugh equally as hard when I saw them. Granted I was in 10th grade when I saw Blink

Well most people at Mac Demarco shows are in 10th grade so I think it's a good comparison.

Love mac's music, but figured I would leave this here. :/ archive.is/iURtf
damn it, I forgot about this. Yeah, Mac N Sleaze.
I'd like to think him and his crew have matured from this, but it's pretty shitty.
I'd not read that before. While I definitely don't think it has the malicious intent of some other predatory artists, that's still wildly irresponsible and unacceptable.
Not sure I'll be able to enjoy his performance in good conscience without some form of contrition on his part about this/a more general apology for sleazy behavior
For some reason I can't open the link right now. What happened?
Here's the text (article also includes photos taken around the time of the incident and a screencap of Mac getting asked about it during a Reddit AMA):
"On a misty summer night, I found myself in the circle of Mac & Co. due to being in the right (wrong) place at the right (wrong) time. After viewing his show – I was a volunteer and free festival shows are a nice perk; I wouldn’t’have gone if I had to pay $$$ – at the Ottawa Bluesfest, Mac invited the crowd to a local cafe to view his friends Viet Cong play. I decided to walk up to the venue, caught the show, shit talked the drummer for their dumb name and their audacity to play in the heart of Chinatown, got some pics and chatted with the crowd/Mac Demarco and company. During the post show glow, I was offered a cold beer out of a garbage bag which I nursed over the course of the night. While still outside of the cafe, I watched Mac give an interview to a local journalist as I talked to his good friend, Trevor, about being from Nova Scotia. After the interview we all went to the back alley of the cafe. This location would be this first of three times that Trevor whipped his dick out without warning those around him; thankfully, everyone present at the time were of age.
Eventually, we all piled into the car of a dude who stuck to Mac like a fly on shit. I met the fly earlier at Mac’s show, as soon as he saw a way to Mac, he took it. Sadly, that way was unknowingly me. Before the dreaded house party, we tried to go to a local club (which was buried in its own local controversy this year) called House of Targ. We were denied due to having open containers. At this point it was well past midnight, the car was so full that two people were in the trunk (one puked in there before getting to Targ), and I was seriously questioning what I got myself into. Over the course of the night, I had a lot of genuine conversations with these White people from Montreal. I learned the difficulty of being a touring musician while being in a relationship, I learned the 24/7 party lifestyle is a grueling one, but most importantly I learned just how far some will go for a momentary laugh.
I handled the GPS on the way to the party. We got lost, oops! After 20 minutes of driving in circles we finally made it to the party. Shit, no beer. These kids were around the age of 16, this was BYOB. It was quite late when we arrived, most who were there were staying for a chance to chill with Mac, this was their glory. Their hero was in the midst and having a swimmingly good time. I talked in high-pitched voices with Mac for most of the night. Later, I found some kids to smoke a j with & Mac and the fly came out for a cig. Eventually #thecrew moved to the backyard where I finally finished my beer. The can was promptly turned into an ashtray, how resourceful. We all shot the shit – enjoying one another’s company, quasi-secluded from the party. I tried some girl’s bourbon&orange, asked if it was watered down. Mac tried it, coughed, said nope.
Like a burst of drunken light, Trevor came outside; semi-erect dick in hand, joyously wagging it around while stating that it’s not as small as it was earlier. We got him in the house where he somehow found an uncut watermelon. Trevor started to cut it up and offers the naturally salted chunks to the oblivious party-goers. I searched the house frantically in order to retrieve the melon wedges from the poor children. To this day, I do not know how successful I was in that feat. While I was saving these kids from God knows what, Mac and Trevor disappeared. After a few minutes, they ascended from upstairs with Trevor in nothing but a red Speedo and proceeded to the couch. Mac got out his old school camera, Trevor plops down. There is now a crescent moon of people watching, no one knew what the fuck was going on. Mac gleefully began to film as Trevor masturbated. The crowd had very audible, mixed emotions, most of which were negative. Eventually one party-goer came over, got Trevor in a headlock, and dragged him out of the house. Trevor tried to come in and apologize, but I blocked him and talked him out of approaching the kid for about 5 minutes. Soon Mac shouts that the party’s over and we head out. I got in the car with the fly, half of Mac’s band, Trevor, and a friend of his who I had a cool report with. A girl drove the rest of them back to the hotel. I said my goodbyes to those I drove with. Trevor hugged me while thanking me for saving his life. The fly drove me home before the other carload got to the hotel, so I never heard Mac’s side of the event. Though, his perspective doesn’t justify the fact that pornography was filmed in front non-consenting minors and some young adults. Mac Demarco betrayed the trust of his young fans and removed pieces of their innocence that night.
This past July marked the one year anniversary of the night that is forever embossed onto my mind’s eye. It has taken me until this moment to come to terms with the reality of what happened. At first, I was in awe that I spent almost an entire day with a fellow gap-toothed artist and his seemingly rad friends; prior to this I had only volunteered at venues and other festivals, never spending more than a few minutes with “the talent”. I thought that night was one of the best nights of my life, then I found a pinch of sanity. I occasionally think about the kids I met then – I wonder how they processed the events, if they think back to it as much as I do. If they still view it in a positive light. I was 19 at the time, the age bridge between the kids and #thecrew. Some of Mac’s friends did mention how “fucked up” it was, but no one dove any deeper than that. But, I will. I will dive head first into this sea of fuckery and fanatics.
And that, my friends, was my night with Mac Demarco."
It's written in the harshest language possible imo, but still pretty indefensible

For anyone that doesn't want to read the whole thing: Mac Demarco filmed his friend jerking off on a couch at a house party that was mostly attended by highschoolers.
I mean, from that story it seems like his friend is definitely more fucked up.
"Mac Demarco betrayed the trust of his young fans and removed pieces of their innocence that night." I also think this is a lot to ask of any musician who has people that are going to follow them to house parties. at what point does mac demarco become responsible for someones kids when he's drunk?
