The thing to me is that every year Coachella has at least one “newsworthy” headliner, generally a big reunion or a stadium act that rarely plays US fests, or some other big name kicking off a new tour. JT maybe would have qualified if he played this year, but next year not so much. Maybe Gambino will be so big by April he can fill all the column inches that go along with the fest, but I doubt it. If Metallica/JT/CG are the top of this poster there just isn’t much to write about IMO, and Coachella needs to keep feeding the press if artists are going to keep wanting to play.

My expectations are what they are because of the caliber of sets I've seen at this festival.
Dude, 8/9 of the headliners the last three years are all arguably #1 acts at almost any other U.S. festival, and the 9th was the LCD reunion.
They are popular, sure, but none of that has anything to do with them being rare or unique. I was just saying there will probably be a woman and Timberlake will be #1. Which means room for the likes of REM or some rare, rock reunion or whatever are slim.

Unless it’s Rihanna or somehow Adele, I don’t see another female headliner happening next year.

I mean, I agree that when you know 2/3 names and they’re “fine,” there’s no guarantee that the third one will blow the doors off. But when you look at past lineups it’s certainly possible.
Plus, Coachella has booked 1.5 women to headline in the last 10 years, so I’m not sure why we should assume they’ll do so next year.

Just seems like with all of the negative press they received for not including women in the past then they wouldn't go right back to not doing so in the #MeToo era.
Rhianna, Swift, and Adele aren't happening. Florence is a borderline act who could fill the void even off of a lackluster release (see Timberlake) and would reinforce its "fine-ness" - considering it will sell anyways. Would love to be wrong though.
Just gonna continue hoping for REM/Metallica while keeping my expectations at bay.
edit: that brings me back to my original question. If there are no women available to headline in 2019, what prominent women could be featured in those key rolls? Maybe Flo just subs.

Yeah I guess your ideas of rare/unique is just different than mine.
I think I would be more frustrated if there were other US festivals booking bands like the smiths or oasis or whatever but they aren't. Seeing what has been available the past couple of years for headliners, I think coachella has done a better job of keeping things interesting than anyone else

This I can agree with.
edit: and I'm by no means blaming GV for what's going on here. They can only work with the talent at hand.

Janelle Monae, Beach House, FKA Twigs if she releases new music, Dua Lipa and CHVRCHES seem like decent candidates for female or female-led acts for the second lines.

What realistic, “legit” acts could we expect in that third headliner spot outside of Metallica and REM? Obviously reunions like Zep and Floyd aren’t happening, but I will gladly take REM. There still are plenty of active rock bands who could headline - Pearl Jam for instance, though many around here can’t see it. Whose left?
Edit: my primary concern with the third act is that we’re already 2/3’s on our way back to another pop/hip-hop topline. Good news is if I believe in Florence all year anything is an improvement.
