As much as I'd like any of Arctic Monkeys, Metallica, or Gambino, would Coachella really have 2/3 headliners from ACL? I feel like it'd be 1 max. Has that happened before?

It happened last year. Radiohead and Kendrick headlined ACL in the fall of 2016 and then headlined Coach in Spring 2017.

Katy Perry has tried to get booked for years and GV wouldn’t do it. She has even less cultural cache than she did a few years ago, I just don’t see it happening. Those Max Martin bangers aren’t exactly heating up the charts these days.

Female headliner or not, I hope they book another lineup with lots of women and poc. That was the most diverse multi-genre festival crowd I've seen, which was awesome. I'm sure Beyonce had a lot to do with it, but still.

FYF and Panorama are incredibly diverse this year as well; seems like Goldenvoice is leading the pack.
Can Rihanna just please start playing fests? Why do we get spammed with Eminem when Rihanna's out there?
I've heard she's pretty mediocre live and relies on lip-synching, can anyone vouch or contest that?
She sang live the 2 arena shows I saw from her. Only issue with her live is lack of energy, she's not a dancer even though you would think so given the music. She has a KILLER live band, her music is much more rock-oriented live.

Maybe I'm getting my hopes up too high because they'd be one of my personal favorite headliners, but I'm thinking Metallica next year makes a ton of sense. Context clues from 2016 that they really want to play Coachella, playing ACL, tour dates with no SoCal in radius clause ending March 2019, would be perfect end to their touring for a few years, willing to take the "#2 role" per ACL, they booked AC/DC and GnR so why not Metallica, etc. etc.

I thought I heard somewhere that Coachella isn’t interested in Metallica at all, sorta like Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and Green Day.
Also, that tour they’re doing they specifically said is for the smaller markets that missed out on them, hence no NY or Chicago shows either. I’m willing to bet they won’t be there.

I could see Frank Ocean maybe headlining. Didn't he post a cryptic message about having another album already done but not releasing it till he felt like it?

Basically but who knows when he feels like it? Could be years

True. Also wouldnt shock me if he pulls another Chinese Democracy; wakes up one day, deletes everything he has, and starts from scratch. Then does that same thing over and over again for years.

So long as the outcome is exponentially better than Chinese Democracy I’m fine with this

True. And he did do that once already during the years between albums; and Blonde came out pretty damn amazing.
I think the Frank Ocean delays were largely due to his label trouble before. Since he’s independent now, I can see something coming sooner rather than later.

Yeah I'm not getting my hopes up for a harder rock headliner like Metallica or Tool. Would be ideal for me but it won't happen. If they somehow got the Stones that would obviously be incredible but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check. I figure they'll go for a big pop star, rap/hip-hop type act, and a promotion for the top 3. That could certainly still shake out fine, though.

I think Chinese Democracy is a good album. Impossible to live up to the hype, but considered in a vacuum as an Axl solo project it's a sold rock and roll record.

I think a hard rock band is far more likely than another pop star. Coachella has a long history booking rock headliners, including dropping a shitload of money on GnR just two years ago. Their history with non-hip hop pop stars is Beyonce. Maybe it’s the start of a new trend, but PT has that quote that this year was unique, so let’s just assume that he wasn’t lying.
The whole “Coachella is a pop fest now” is vastly overstated.
Metallica will inevitably headline this fest. Pearl Jam and Foo Fighters have technically already played. Plus, Goldenvoice has already hosted a Metallica festival at the Polo Fields so it's not like they are above working with them. It's just a matter of time.
