Hello Inforoosters!
Most of you new people don't know me. I am a 50-something widow, mother, sister, and daughter. I am a healthcare provider with a strong social conscience. I have been through a couple of years of incredibly bad juju that have left me financially destitute and living with my mother (its own special hell).
The things that I have endured over the past couple of years have left me with a greater awareness of what it is like to be a have-not. Also, through some issues that I have faced in the past, both in my personal and career life, I have a keen understanding of how women in America need to fight for the most basic of freedoms. Likewise, I have family and/or close friends that are LGBQT, of various ethnic backgrounds and various religions/lack thereof.
Some of you witnessed a complete meltdown on Facebook last night in which a sibling and a high school friend attacked what I believe in. This is what I seem to live with on a daily basis until I can get out of middle Georgia.
The only way that I can find right now to take control in the face of overwhelming odds is to assert my voice. When I heard about this march, I knew that I had to be there. I am scraping together the cost of a chartered bus seat that will leave Friday night and return Sunday pm. It is a small sacrifice.
I am not meaning for this to be a political thread. Please do not go there. What I intend to do with this thread is to raise awareness about the march and to ask your well-wishes and moral support. I have no idea what I am going to be stepping into, but feel a calling to do this as if it were a modern-day Crusade.
I plan to do my best to document the weekend through photos and written word. I will be using social media as possible (although I completely don't get Snapchat to this day lol). but will try to do some live Facebook and Instagram updates. I don't use Twitter that much but might send a tweet or two. If any of you are aligned with a publication or website that would appreciate a contribution from me, let me know. When I get back I hope to write a blog entry as well as an article/essay about the weekend.
Also, I need honest input about what to wear. I seriously am considering a tutu on top of whatever layers will be required in the January DC weather. I have a green one that is in great shape but the rest of my tutu wardrobe is pretty much beat up from festivals and being packed to move around. Should I try to scrape together some sort of "freedom Tutu"? just forego the tutu at all?
I appreciate any help or advice you all can give, but more so I appreciate your well wishes and love. Namaste.
Some of my retired derby teammates are going as well. They are wearing cape and actually doing a fundraiser in the process that will go to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Basically you donate $20 and you get an 8" x 8" square that you can design, send back and it will then be sewn into the capes. If you see a bunch of girls wearing capes, they are all good people from New Orleans and you should go say hi. They all know me as Vieux (Voo) as well.
All that being said, I don't think that it matters what you wear. Wear what you are comfortable in, whatever that may be. If you feel comfortable making a statement and wearing a freedom tutu do it. They are very easy and inexpensive to make, if I had time I would offer to make you one, but unfortunately we are on a time crunch to get out of our rental and into our house. I can send you links to help you out if you are interested in making one.
I can't wait to read about your experience, please make sure to post the blog. I think it is great that you are going and wish I could go as well.
I wasn't....but I might be now. Thanks for sharing this.
I might also recommend connecting with a local chapter of Pantsuit Nation? I know that was more of a Hillary/election support group kind of thing, but I imagine you might find people in your area possibly interested in sharing rides/accommodations there or expenses? (Or even just an uplifting dose of feminine solidarity.)
Not sure what it looks like elsewhere, but Wisconsin had a sizeable closed Facebook group that rebranded recently with the FAWN acronym. If that helps any.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
