I went to a fancy store where they watch your gait and recommend some shoes got whatever felt best. Then I bought a couple pairs when they were on sale on Amazon. Now I just switch out whenever my knees and shins get consistently sore on runs.
Yeah I'm not very smart about my shoes. I just wear Nike Frees.
nike pegasus only for me. very neutral shoe and have lots of padding. i'm not the skinniest person so its really helped. I bought some kinvara's a few years back and the lack of padding caused a stress fracture in my foot. 9 weeks off from running was pretty terrible. Any kind of running shoe you see with a large number behind it is probably a good start. For example, Nike Pegasus 31. It's a long time running shoe! Anything with a 3 or 4 or no number at all, might not want to run too much mileage in. Also, depending on how much you run, your shoes expire after a few hundred miles. Nike's running app has a shoe tracker so you can log your mileage.
Thanks for starting this thread. As far as shoes go, I'll agree with getting something more expensive. The more I've spent on shoes, the more I've enjoyed them. Obviously there is a point of diminishing return, but the most I've spent is $120. Have done Nike Free Run>New Balance Fresh Foam 980>Saucony Kinvara 5>Saucony Ride 9.
Currently training for the Myrtle Beach Marathon (my first full marathon) in the beginning of March. I really want to do the Bonnaroo 5K, but every year I've been, Friday has such a good late night lineup I can't bring myself to sign up. Anyone else have any races planned?
I unintentionally ran into a coyote one day. But that's it. My dog is lazier than me.
Currently in Asics. Just picked up the new generation of the Gel DS Trainer (v.21). Third round with this shoe, and will probably evaluate my gait and new offerings next year at this time. Usually rotate out my shoes every 350-500 miles (a year).
Advice: get some rollers. I use the targetpoint kind, but any will help. My IT Bands got inflamed when I was training for my first marathon, and my legs haven't been the same since. Rollers help a great deal loosening up areas which you cannot normally stretch (no joint, for instance). I need to use mine more. It hurts, but it is immediate relief once done.
I occasionally run with my Standard Poodle/German Pointer mix, but he tops out at about 5 miles before he's over it. How about you?
I have a black mouth cur puppy (5 months) so we are sticking to the basics and small mileage until he's old enough to train. I had a scary experience running and that's why I got the dog. He's very protective of me already on our walks which I love! Sometimes he gets scared though and it jolts me in the other direction but I'm hoping with more training we can overcome that.

Getting old sucks.
I jumped over a snake once. I thought that was the way I was going to die. But I survived. Idk what I'd do if I saw a coyote!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my roller! I keep meaning to buy a ball just for my feet. When i wake up in the mornings, my feet feel like they belong to an 80 year old

I did this as well. My shoes are Pearl Izumi n3 I think. Best thing I have ever done. Of course I haven't ran in months, the motivation has been gone, but once we are done with the house I am planning on starting again.
nerdbyrd my puppies can't handle running. They are 7 and 13 lbs and get tired after a block.

My puppy is 35lbs and I can't run fast enough lol He can do a mile extremely well and then i reward him with a long walk. I'm hoping if he's that fast, he will help push my pace time! I'm such a slow runner normally! I honestly love the puppy snores after we run lol so damn cute!!! My pup is a hunting dog breed and requires a lot of exercise. The internet said "this breed will not be happy sitting on the couch all day" so I'm hoping he will be able to really do distance with me with proper training.

How good is your pup off the leash? I like to take my parent's dog trail running with me. That way I can let him off the leash and he can do what he wants but he comes back if I call him.

As he's getting bigger, he's not that great off the leash but I feel like if I tried a trail where not a lot of dogs and cars were, he might would do pretty well without the leash

Go for it! My family always trains the dogs to not leave the yard because we don't have a fence. Once Rafa (our lab) got the hang of that he was really good off the leash. Now when we run he can trot and sniff all he wants and if he goes to far I just give him a little "uh uh" and he comes right back.
Just have lots of treats in your pocket the first time you try it haha.

I love the Nike app!
I just bring mine into the shop and they tell me if they are still fine. I know I have put some serious miles on mine and am just planning on replacing them. It's like 500 miles, and my shoes are a few years old. I might have to look into the Nike app if they have that shoe tracker though.
