I think Arcade Fire are probably the most likely headliner guess we have. Missing out on one of the biggest indie rock bands for two tours in a row would be a bad move on Roo's part, and, despite this year..., I have faith in them booking AF. I'm also going to keep holding out my hopes for Roger Waters. I think if Roo was close to booking him this year and he is playing shows in the fall, so he'll have a show put together, they could potentially make it happen next year. If by some miracle we get both Roger and AF I will be ecstatic. Who would be a reasonable #3 with those two?
If they're looking for something more mainstream/pop-friendly to round out the top 3, I could see The Weeknd (if he's still active next year), Calvin Harris, or even The Killers. I guess Lana Del Rey or Lorde could also fill that spot. Beck would be great, but I think they would need to pair him with a big #4. They could also go the route of promoting an act that is already on the cusp of headlining (Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, or Arctic Monkeys to name a few).
"Rolling Stone ranked Hot Fuss the 43rd of its "100 Best Albums of the Decade", and it is one of the five most recent recordings listed among the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Gigwise readers voted it the number-one "Best Debut Album of All Time" in 2013 and Rolling Stone ranked it the 33rd of its list of "The 100 Greatest Debut Albums of All Time"
33rd greatest debut album of all time?
I had to know what debut albums were considered not as worthy as The Killer's "Hot Fuss"
Just a few examples of debut records not as good as "Hot Fuss"

Why do people suddenly think that Beck is a headliner?
My guess? Big grammy win after playing last time + headlining other festivals this year (though they are definitely smaller......GovBall and Mountain Jam).
I love the guy and wouldn't complain about him headlining but it's not like he's grown into a huge phenomenon or anything. I think he'd be perfect as a pre-headliner. Or maybe a shared spot like MMJ/Arcade Fire and Stevie Wonder/Jay-Z. A slightly bigger name after him would be awesome.

I think they will try really hard to get Lorde (probably has to have a new album cooking since she's been away for awhile) and Arcade Fire. Not saying Lorde is a headliner at all but just that they will want to get her bad I would think. I think they will try for The Weeknd but if that doesn't end up happening then Chance the Rapper gets the highest billed HipHop spot easily. I honestly think the Drake train has come and passed and quite frankly they could probably spend that money elsewhere and get someone better.

I feel so much hatred right now.
Its too late to stop people from being upset, but the guidelines for their vote clearly gives a reason why Hot Fuss would be above those other albums.
"Albums got docked points if the artist went on to far greater achievements (which is why Please Please Me and Greetings from Asbury Park, great as they are, didn't make the Top 10); conversely, we gave a little extra recognition to great debut albums that the artist never matched (hello, Is This It and Illmatic!). We also skipped solo debuts by artists who were already in well-known bands, which is why you won't see John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band or Paul Simon. We focused, instead, on debuts that gave you the thrill of an act arriving fully-formed, ready to reinvent the world in its own image."
This list is not saying that Hot Fuss is better than Zeppelin I in a vacuum.
Because Deadmau5 and LCD Soundsystem headlined this festival.
I don't follow that line of reasoning, though. Deadmau5 is one of the most popular names in what is arguably the most popular genre for a pretty large slice of the festival-going demographic. LCD Soundsystem is coming off of a break-up/hiatus which elevated their status significantly, to the point where they're headlining every festival they're playing. Meanwhile, Beck, while awesome and certainly popular enough, hasn't really gotten any bigger since his heyday, and plays festivals fairly regularly yet doesn't headline (save for some of the smaller fests). Unless his new album wins him a bunch of new fans, it doesn't make sense for him to headline.
The Strokes were sub-headliners for years and haven't gotten anymore popular since their heyday, then suddenly they decided that they were headliners and wouldn't play fests unless booked accordingly. LCD did the same thing in a way, and so could Beck (and he should too). There aren't enough quality headliners to fill out all these festivals and Beck should get the bump up.
Rolling Stone always seems to screw up their lists in magnificent ways. I know they've since redone it but when they released that all-time best guitarists list in the early 2000s I ended my subscription it was so horrendous. They had fucking kurt cobain in the top ten if I recall correctly

But he didn't even headline Governor's Ball - he was 4th on the lineup, and opened up for the Strokes on Friday.
My mistake. I thought he was headlining but haven't really looked at the schedule. Either way I want Beck back at Roo. Main stage or even as a late night which act could be interesting.

Is there a lack of "quality" headliners or is it just that tastes in music have become so segmented that people's idea quality headliners differs drastically? I also think that some of these artists that are looking for an arm, leg and first born in order to perform at a festival are holding fans hostage when the promoters spend all of their money on them and then leave little to book a good undercard.
If Beck wants to headline festivals then he should refuse to play them unless they book him as a headliner and just stand his ground on it. Then you'll see if Bonnaroo thinks he is a headliner or not.

Headliners are great. Middle of the card is lackluster (missing a few "Holy Shit" names) and the undercard could be better. I Love Bonnaroo but this year they scaled shit back. Wish I could see Dead & Co/LCD/Pearl Jam/Tame Impala/Kamasi Washington but this year is not that year.

. They're not getting booked to headline Coachella, or Lolla, or ACL, or Bonnaroo.

All acts on the top 7-8 lines now ask for high prices, it's not just exclusively the headliners.
I think when people say "quality" headliners they refer to acts with a strong back catalog and whom have maintained credibility and/or relevance over the years... see for instance the debate with The Killers, where people classify them (correctly or not) as a hype act from the period 2004-2009.

Dear god I hope not.
Same here. I mean, it's not a wish list.
And obviously not comparing artists, but a lot of people were surprised to see Deadmau5 as a headliner and Kendrick Lamar in the top-5 a couple of years ago. And I wouldn't be surprised to see Twenty One Pilots as popular as, say, Macklemore a year from now.

There's 2 bands I'd go see in that entire list, but it's realistic which is the worst part.

Are Twenty One Pilots even popular with anybody over high school age? A city festival would be probable, but a camping festival seems like a hard sell.

They had the biggest daytime What crowd of the festival last year.
