General Info Biography: Jamie Meline, better known as El-P, founded and ran the seminal rap label Def Jux, until it became unfeasible for it to continue as we all came to know and love it. He produced many of the 2000s' greatest tracks albums, including Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein and songs by Mr. Lif, Cage, and Aesop Rock. He's put out three solo albums of his own, which range from merely very good - Fantastic Damage to great - Cancer 4 Cure.
Michael Render a/k/a Killer Mike came up under the tutelage and wings of Big Boi, of OutKast, and made his debut on their 2000 album Stankonia. He released several good-to-great albums on various majors throughout the 2000s, but it wasn't until 2011, when a chance meeting with El-P led to El producing his biggest triumph to that point, 2012's R.A.P. Music. Later that year, Mike made a guest appearance on Cancer 4 Cure, further cementing the creative friendship the two had developed.
In April of 2013, the two announced that they were working together on an album called Run the Jewels.

Physical Reaction/Live Show High energy, volatile crowd. Wear your toughest shoes if you're gonna be under the tent, because this is going to be a pit unlike you've seen at a hip-hop show. Don't bring anything you care about.
Personal Notes I saw Run the Jewels when they toured the second album, last November. It was the livest show I've ever seen at a venue known for them, and I'm amazed no one had to go to the hospital. I sweated through a pair of jeans. Do you know how hard that is to do? This will be the show that you have the highest chance of needing IV fluids after, which of course means that you should not, under any circumstances, miss it.
Didn't even have to consider whether or not I would be at this show. Although, I didn't expect it to get as rowdy as you described. All the live videos I've seen, the crowd is just sort of standing around.
And let us not forget this song. Killer Mike absolutely HATES Ronald Reagan. I'm pretty sure he had a neighborhood BBQ/party when Reagan died. Cold blooded.

At one point, I jumped in the air and did not come down.
Fuck the law, they can eat my dick, that's word to pimp.
Saw them open for Jack White in January. I love hip-hop, but have generally been disappointed by hip-hop shows (for various reasons). RTJ are definitely an exception. If there's no conflicts, I'll be seeing them again.

So pumped for this show! I think it may be #1 must see act at Roo. I know you plan to fill some stuff in later, but I'll go ahead and throw some love to El-P's original rap group Company Flow. Funcrusher Plus is a seminal hip hop album.
(This is definitely NOT required listening for RTJ)

When I saw them last November, the crowd was so rough that Killer Mike stopped the show in the middle of a song, told everyone to shut up and take two steps back and that he'll kick people out if they start instigating shit with other people. He went on to basically encourage getting rowdy in the friendliest way.
They're gonna ruin you and you're gonna be really fuckin' happy about it.

Second this. Were awesome at FFF. Got the whole crowd to do a Suck My Dick Sun Kil Moon chant. He was on stage right next to them too haha

Damn. I also didn't realize how "rowdy" this show was going to be. I'm not sure if I'm more excited or nervous now. But I plan on being under the tent for sure. Hoping for a LN that doesn't conflict with any other must-sees for me.

I haven't seen the two together, but I did get to see Killer Mike roughly two years ago with a crowd of no more than about sixty people. Not enough people for it to be insane, but I can absolutely see this turning into a shitshow.
1/30: Cold War Kids
2/6: Cherub
4/22: The Mountain Goats
5/25: Laura Jane Grace "Killing Me Loudly"
5/31: The Decemberists
6/11-6/14: BONNAROO 2015
6/28: Against Me!
6/30: Against Me!
Edit: Pretty interesting message here... not necessarily the video I would expect with this song though.
From the description of the video:
"When Run The Jewels sent me this track, I knew we had the opportunity to create a film that means something. I felt a sense of responsibility to do just that. We had to exploit the lyrics and aggression and emotion of the track, and translate that into a film that would ignite a valuable and productive conversation about racially motivated violence in this country. It's provocative, and we all knew this, so we were tasked with making something that expressed the intensity of senseless violence without eclipsing our humanity. For me, it was important to write a story that didn’t paint a simplistic portrait of the characters of the Cop and Kid. They're not stereotypes. They're people - complex, real people and, as such, the power had to shift between them at certain points throughout the story. The film begins and it feels like they have been fighting for days, they’re exhausted, not a single punch is thrown, their violence is communicated through clumsy, raw emotion. They've already fought their way past their judgments and learned hatred toward one another. Our goal was to highlight the futility of the violence, not celebrate it.”
For El-P of Run the Jewels “this is a vision of a seemingly never-ending struggle whose participants are pitted against each other by forces originating outside of themselves.”
Adds partner Killer Mike "this video represents the futile and exhausting existence of a purgatory-like law enforcement system. There is no neat solution at the end because there is no neat solution in the real world. However, there is an opportunity to dialogue and change the way communities are policed in this country. Salutes to AG Rojas for his unique take on the subject matter and to Shea and Keith for giving us their all and bringing it to life."

Yeah I was reading that, definitely makes sense with the video. I think I just selfishly wanted something more fun for that song in particular. Always good to see musicians using their craft to make people think though.

Should be amazing.
Just saw them at BUKU, it was so good! I can't wait to see them again, especially with the LN set!

Drove to Nashville this weekend from Ohio and finally had a chance to REALLY listen to their albums...... HOLY SHIT, THIS IS SOME DARK, MURDEROUS SHIT. I. Cannot. Wait. RTJ is simply made for late night Bonnaroo.
seeing this encouraged me to listen to them at work this afternoon
I listened to both albums on the way to Nashville, on the way back to Ohio and now today at work. So fucking good.
i just know there's going to be conflicts with mau5 and flying lotus, those 2 are ahead of them on my list. i'm willing to split some flylo/rtj time though to see both. c'mon schedule, time to show up!

I personally want to see deadmau5 but I know I'll be giving up his set to be up close for RTJ. I don't care either. Deadmau5 is gonna be amazing all that, but late night RTJ set at roo won't ever be topped for me, so I'm going to miss as many sets as possible to be close. And if this set leads into flylo, EVER BETTER.
I have many shows lined up with good people to see them with but I think, at least right now, RTJ is gonna be a solo show for me. I don't want anyone to hold me back at this show. I'm going hard and that's all there is to it.
