Russell Whyte aka Rustie is an electronic music producer from Glasgow. Given the diverse strains of videogame music, instrumental hip-hop, trance, and grime that run through his music, it's no wonder that his style has been simply described as "maximalist" by music critics.
His debut album, Glass Swords, certainly goes all in on this description, almost wall-to-wall hi NRG bangers and booming drops. The sharp and streamlined production underscores a pop-rave aesthetic, not necessarily as aggressive or menacing as his dubstep/UK bass forbearers. Released in 2011, the album remains a startlingly prescient dip into a slick mishmash of influences that continues to serve as a touchstone for electronic music.
The follow-up album, Green Language, widened the scope beyond straightforward dance tracks by adopting a more restrained approach. Many of the songs also feature a diverse cast of guest vocalists including Bonnaroo alum Danny Brown, grime rapper D Doulbe E, and funk singer Redinho. While the album may be a bit more hit or miss, the progression serves as a better balance to his initial sound.
Rustie's live sets explore both ends of his discography. Expect crowd-pleasing dance bombs mixed with piano-driven interludes, glossy synths and popping bass lines mixed with rainforest sounds.

Suggested Listening:
All Nite was the first song that I personally listened to from him, it pretty well encapsulates the sound of Glass Swords
His essential mix for BBC is, well, essential. He puts all of his influences on display and includes a bunch of his own unreleased stuff. One of the best premixed DJ sets in the past five years. https%3A//soundcloud.com/rustie/essential-mix-bbc-radio-1
Slasherr was released as a non-album single, another classic Rustie banger (also has been remixed by Flume)
Raptor (off Green Language) defies easy comparison. While structured like a traditional trap song, the sonic elements are much more textured and subtle
His remix of A.G. Cook's "Beautiful" blends their styles into an exultant adrenaline rush. This is one of his most recent releases to date
Live Show:
I was surprised to see Rustie hit the US festival circuit so hard, but it makes logical sense given how well his music fits the context. This will be a very high energy set, highly recommended for fans of any sort of electronic music. The best case scenario for this set would be a LN or last tent show on Thursday night. Knowing Bonnaroo, there is the possibility he will be stuck opening a tent a la Clockwork or Classixx. It might also depend on if he brings the current live show he is touring with, which is heavily reliant on 3D visuals.
