Are people going to get pissy or annoyed if you actually stand and sing and dance at the hill?
Last year every time I went to the what stage I noticed everyone in the VIP were sitting on those lawn chairs and there was never any excitement coming from that area.
Am I going to get sneer remarks from surrounding people if I am enthusiastic? Or told to sit down?
^I can't answer that (I'm sure someone can/will) specifically, but I remember that bunny came down to the field for headliners with us lowly GA folk last year because she hated how everyone just sat there all day.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

I do not think you would get any negative responses if you are cool about it. Yes, there are more people sitting down, as there are chairs to sit in. But there is plenty of room in that area for you to find a spot to dance or carry on as you wish. As long as you are courteous and o not stand directly in front of somebody sitting, which should not be a problem at all. For the headliners it was packed on the hill (I was last there in 2012) with people dancing and carrying on in a large section of the hill and people sitting in the chairs, I didn't see anybody getting upset at all. You should have no problems.

I didn't experience anyone giving us a hard time for standing/dancing/having fun. I definitely felt like we felt very removed from the whole crowd experience though. I think we may only use the hill and it's chairs for naps this year

From experience, VIP hill is terrible. I would never watch from there. I really wish they would attempt something similar to how they set up VIP at the Which stage.

I love many of the other perks of VIP, but the What Stage viewing area isn't one of them. It's definitely more of a stick up their butt crowd. Not only do they not get up and dance, many of them don't even clap. And it's not like the sound is better or you have great sight lines. If the crowd is insane and I need to sit down, I'll consider it. Plus they only serve crappy light beer (no offense to you crappy light beer drinkers out there). It's way more fun to watch the What Stage with the GA folks (or to use the VIP lingo, with the LIPs -- Less Important Persons). OK, I made that last part up. But not the part about it being more fun.

so basically the people who use the hill are older people im guessing? i just dont see why they wouldnt be excited enough to clap!

I never had anyone get sassy with me for dancing or standing. I will say that the hill is pretty low energy unless it's a headliner, so I avoid it. If it's someone I really want to see, I get in the pit because it's pretty roomy and more active (at least every time i've been in it).
The same can sometimes apply to the VIP area at the Which. A lot of the VIP crowd baffle me. Last year, I was camped next to people from Canada who rarely left their tent, and beyond them were a couple who sat in lawn chairs on top of their van the ENTIRE weekend. Seems like a waste, but to each their own.

Well, yeah. VIPs tend to be older than GAs. But there are plenty of young stick-up-their-butt types there and plenty of us older people (we actually prefer the term "farts") getting down with our bad selves (that's from the 70s). I think that a big part of the dynamic is that there are people who bring a spouse/love interest who says, I'll only go if we go VIP. And then that person sits around being boring. Also, you're just more isolated up on that hill. It's much more of a spectator experience.

Nope that is another incorrect stereotype. Just because we are older, certainly does not mean we don't want to have as much fun as everyone else. If I was that person, I probably wouldn't be at Bonnaroo

i didnt mean it in a wrong way, if i didnt want to have fun, i too wouldnt be at the farm. what i ment by that is since older people are at the hill, its more peaceful and not as crowded or out of control as standing in the regular crowd. I feel like the hill is for like relaxing and actually relax and enjot the show. i dont blame you, you may see me there passed out in a chair in the middle of a set, that is if i dont rest enough overnight.

I have to say after being in GA last year in front of What stage for two straight sets on Sunday and enduring numerous attempts of 200 lb frat bros trying to crowd surf over 100 lb girls (you can imagine how it went for everyone else nearby) I'm looking forward to the hill this year.
I was on the hill dancing and tripping over myself during Macklemore last year. Nobody said anything, although I suppose that doesn't mean there weren't people who wanted to... *shrugs* During Jack Johnson it was lovely being able to just chill in the chairs and zone into the mellowness of the man's music. Buuuuuut, we clapped. And afterwards we still had plenty of energy to go galavanting about that night. During Sir Paul McCartney the hill was full. We stood and danced and sat and clapped and sang along. Getting out of there that night was like being part of a cattle round up. If you go in the hill, hang back and wait about leaving, or leave before the end of the show to avoid the mass exodus that hits the exit gates. I concur - it would certainly be nice if we had some sort of section down near the stage like we have at Which.

If the unnecessary sarcastic posts are indicative of the people who have been shouting out for the VIP camping group - I'm so in. lol. These are my kind of people.
Kindly inform them that you paid the exact same amount as they did. You have every right to sing, dance and create as much general happiness as they do, you are just utilizing that right. Feel free to join me as I dance, spin and sing on the hill! Even though I'll spend a good amount of time on the field.
I noticed in the brochures with our packages that they have not specified where our viewing area will be for What. Might we cross our fingers for a change of pace?

Last year for Petty went to the MOON so to speak and really were in the mood for laid back sing along. We went to the Hill and no one cared what we did. I danced my BUTT off, brought in like 8 beers and a ton of food. It is WAY more chill on the hill. Created a whole area for us and just had a freaking blast. But in the mindset we were in it was SO PERFECT. Just know if you are looking for energy, crowd camaraderie etc go down. If you are looking for real chill, low energy/maintenance go to the hill. This year we don't plan on using it for anyone except Elton and that is because we are coming from a stage that will go RIGHT up to Elton so it is either jump at the back of the massive What field or go to the hill and dance our butts off. I love having the option but we definitely use it for what it is goood for and that is space/chill. If you want to relax and kick it the hill does have the best sight lines for sitting/laying around.
This year we have a TON more acts on What than we did last year (Vampire, Kanye, Seasick, Yonder, Greensky, Monae etc etc) and almost all we are going to be in the field for.
They never specify the viewing area for VIP but I am pretty positive it is the same.

We always split our time between the hill and GA based purely on our excitement for the act. The hill is far enough away to ensure a trip to the pit or field for an awesome act. I've seen people sleep through DMB on the Hill and 70 yr old's cry like it was Ed Sullivan during McCartney, shaking their titanium joints past the max stress level of the parts. Considering the Headliners this year, I wouldn't imagine many issues outside of perhaps Sunday night. The hill tends to be pretty chill during the undercard, but there areas out of the way to dance.

Last year was only my 2nd year in VIP, but i didn't notice any particular 'stick in the butt' vibe really. Granted we were pretty chilled out during Petty....but it was Sunday night. We were in a low key kinda mood by then. I can't say I spent any/much time there other than during headliners though. Which is when the What field gets so crowded that if you can't arrive super early, or want to be able to pee or get beers during the show if need be, issues can arise. And I know during RHCP, which didn't really hold our interest much, we had a rowdy drunken time with some random peeps up around the bar area that we still talk about! Some older chick told my buddy if she were ten years younger she would be having his baby! Good times. And during Paul last year even the old farts were getting down and reliving the glory years. Like anywhere on the farm, I guess it can be part luck with who is around you. Plus, there are some grassy more open areas where you are free to get wild if the chair area seems too stifling. I actually only ever ventured around the chairs for Petty myself, because we(or my friends rather...holding me a spot) posted up for nearly front row.
But I wouldn't sweat it. As the saying goes..." you do you". Party down. If they're at Roo and singing and dancing annoys them, they came to the wrong damn place. Perhaps a re-education is in order.
Sidenote: I've yet to experience or explore the supposed VIP pit right options during a headliner, and I'm definately gonna try that for Yeezus this year. If I can get up close for "Can't Tell Me Nothing" I'm gonna go apeshit! And if that works out I'll definately do the same for Jack White. Elton? Probably the Hill.
