Might be the last year the Big 10 is the best conference before Maryland and Rutgers water it down.
Wisconsin ain't just a bunch of white boys playing down tempo anymore; their offense is going to be legit. Watch Wisconsin/Florida tonight during the Duke/Kansas commercial breaks.
I feel dirty rooting for Duke but I want them undefeated for the NIT tip-off. Arizona creamed Long Beach State last night and while that might not sound like much we have a tendency to play down to opponents the last few seasons. I'm getting insanely excited for the potential this season

Jabari Parker was better than I could have ever expected in his first game. We will see how he and Wiggins handle the big stage tonight.
These big time early season matchups are so great for the sport. They generate early interest, which is hard during NFL and college football. Its great for the fans, if your team wins, that's awesome, if they lose, who cares, its November and really doesn't have any effect on the season or tourney seeding.
Also, glennron, I'm obviously biased, but I think the Big 10 has already been passed. I think the Big 10 has potential, but I'll have to wait and see how IU, Minn, and Northwestern get going before I say the conference is better than the ACC. Lots of basketball to be played though, and still a lot of unknowns.

If by "water," you mean improve - then you're correct. At least as far as MD is concerned.
Fun Fact #1 -
# of NCAA Championships by MD since 2001 - 1 # of NCAA Championships by the ENTIRE Big Ten since 2001 - 0 # of total NCAA Championships by the ACC since 2001 - 5
Fun Fact #2 - Results of ACC-Big Ten Challenges since 2001:
2001 - MD over #2 Illinois 2002 - Indiana over MD 2003 - MD over #13 Wisconsin 2004 - Wisconsin over MD 2005 - MD over Minnesota 2006 - MD over Illinois 2007 - MD over Illinois 2008 - MD over Michigan 2009 - MD over Indiana 2010 - MD over Penn State 2011 - Illinois over MD 2012 - MD over Northwestern 2013 - ??

Last night was awesome. I don't even care that my team came out on the losing end (Its November), I thoroughly enjoyed watching both games in the Champions Classic last night. So much talent on the floor and all the big names exceeded the hype. Should be a fun season.
The games were great, but last night was a fantastic example of everything that is wrong with ESPN. I ended up putting it on mute and listening to music.
What a s**t day for Illinois recruiting. First that, then their top PG recruit Quentin Snider who was previously committed at Louisville decommitted and went back to signing with Louisville.

It's a good rule. And it's been a rule for years, it just hasn't been enforced. Freedom of movement is a good thing, its worked out great in the NBA and will do the same in college once the players adjust.

I take back my comments about the ACC being the best conference in the country right now. Maryland, UNC, & Notre Dame all laid a rotten egg yesterday and BC, who was supposed to take a step forward this season, had a narrow win against FAU, their first of the season. Things could certainly change over the course of the next 4 months, but as of now, big disappointment.
Where's all your Rutgers stats supporting your argument? Oh. Yeah. Never Mind. The big ten has middle tier teams that actually could land in Final Four.
To take Tom's point a step further: The ACC-Big Ten Challenge is entering its 15th season (I remember watching the first one, this makes me feel old). The ACC has won it 10 times, the Big 10 has won it 3 times and they tied last year.
It's precious watching you pump up Final Fours, it really is. Number of NCAA titles since 2000 for the ACC? 5. Big 10? 1.
I like the Big 10, but the Big East (before it was dismantled) and the ACC have both been better conferences since the turn of the century.
And I'd love to see this "middle tier" teams list of Final Four candidates.

I agree this is a good rule that they are finally enforcing. Although it has me a bit weary of my teams chances at the repeat. Hand checking is one thing Rick Pitino's defenses have thrived on for years and definitely played a part in our title run last year.
And I'd love to see this "middle tier" teams list of Final Four candidates.
Consider #1 MSU, ohio state, michigan upper tier. Middle tier--It won't be be pretty but Bo Ryan' Wisconsin could go deep as a middle tier team. An Indiana is very young so while they may not look dominant in December watch out in March! The IU Syracuse matchup looks fun. Initially I thought Syracuse might roll over IU but after watching them wrestle out a narrow victory against St Francis who knows?
Right. Because Wisconsin and Indiana are "middle tier teams that can make the Final Four," but Notre Dame or Syracuse have no shot because....why, exactly? I mean, besides the very clear bias you are harboring.

There are probably six teams in the Big 10 better than Indiana. Minnesota and Illinois are debatable so I'll pretend Indiana is in between them. That was a weird team for that dude to use to make his point.
Also:
A)Of course the ACC has been better than the Big Ten the last 15 years. No one is disputing that.
B)Using the Big 10/ACC Challenge to determine which conference is better in a given year is pretty silly.

That's not what I used it for. This guy's original premise is that Big 10 basketball is clearly the better conference. Clearly not, otherwise they'd wipe the ACC every year. It's just a stupid argument to have in general, there's too many teams with too many games to accurately gauge these teams, otherwise NCAA tourney picks would be much, much easier.

Not sure who who you're addressing here, but my point was only in regards to Maryland, and if you can't use head to head to determine whether one team belongs with other teams then I don't know what else to use, but my post was half tongue in cheek in the first place.

Mostly flanz, but more of a generality I guess.
But since you mentioned it, looking at Maryland's results the last 10 years, I believe two of the teams they've beaten have been tournament teams: 2010-2011 Penn State was like an 11 seed, same with 2008-2009 Michigan. Which is kind of my point about the B10/ACC Challenge in general. Unless you're one of the top teams (Duke, Carolina, MSU, OSU) you're going to play some bad teams occassionally. Just because the 7th best team from one conference can beat the 8th best team from the other conference doesn't really mean anything.
Gotta love sports. On this board the only way to get someone even more riled up is to insult their favorite musicians. I love Bob Dylan but I suspect you guys don't since he's from Big Ten country
And you're right. The PAC 10 doesn't get credit when they are good because half of the country is sleeping while they play.
Indeed, same reason it seems no one at ESPN has heard of anyone on our team except Aaron Gordon. Hopefully, we will gain some respect playing Duke @msg and @michigan.
Last night was a fun night, we beat Farlegih Dickinson (who?)100-50 to get Sean Miller his 100th win at Arizona.

Arizona gets plenty of respect, otherwise they wouldn't be ranked top 5 so early in the season. Aaron Gordon is all you hear about the same way it is with Duke (Parker), Kansas (Wiggins), and Kentucky (Randle) right now, because its the year of the freshmen on ESPN. Nick Johnson gets plenty of love by those who follow the sport and Hollis-Jefferson should have a big time future, as well.
