side story, i was lucky enough to see tom waits a while back. the only reason he was in Mobile, AL was because katrina fucked up all the venues in new orleans. people were shouting out requests for songs, and tom kept saying he wanted to play our requests but couldn't hear us. he'd pause and ask people to call them out again, but of course everyone is yelling different songs. after experiencing some mock frustration, he said what we needed to do was organize. get together, nominate some leaders, vote on who that leader is, then we can share our song suggestions with the elected leader who will bring them to tom. was one of the better ways i've heard a performer deal with a crowd.
he told lots of stories and to this day is easily the most charming live performer i've seen. my then-girlfriend-now-wife didn't know shit about tom waits and she was delighted the whole show.

I was lucky enough to see him in Asheville at a small theatre. My gf at the time went with me and it was a (my first) ticketless concert. We went from will call behind a rope to the door and a dude kept screaming he’d give $1k cash to whoever sold him 2 tickets. The usher just looks at him and finally says “and if you did, you wouldn’t be allowed in the door”.
I still wonder if homeslice made it in that night.
