OK, I'm 50, out of shape, have some excess padding and have decided that I want to try to train for and do a sprint triathlon approximately one year from now (benefiting the children's hospital where I practice), more than anything just to prove to myself that I can.
I have found some great online resources but need input from any cyclists out there as to what kind of bike I should be looking at.
I do have a pool so I can get in plenty of swimming time and have access to a family lakehouse so I can get some open water swimming practice in as well.
I think the running part will really be my Waterloo. I have a knee that periodically gives me problems...but the run is only 3 miles and I'm told that many people walk it anyway.
Aside from telling me how crazy and out of touch with reality I am, which I already know, any advice?
Start doing 5 mile power walks two or three times a week, once the weight starts coming off it gets easier and easier. Once you can walk that without being winded in an 1.45 hours or so the rest will be easier.
update. In spite of being sick for a few days and losing a few other training days to random BS, I can now swim 3/4 of the required distance, albeit in a pool. I suck at flip turns though...lol.
am running just a tiny bit of the way but doing 4 miles with no problem too.
the only missing ingredient is the bike, but I've got enough to keep me busy till I find the right one for the right price.
do not forget your diet, I am not talking weights watcher, south beach type dieting, I mean what you eat. We are what we eat. Your exercise is a large part of the endeavor, but diet is just important. You might already know this, and have a healthy diet regimen, but I just repeated it. Keep us up to date, studies show people who talk about weight loss, exercise programs do better and have more success than those who do not. Encouragement form others is an amazing thing. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
