i'm trying to find other inforoosters that want to help out the world together. i can help with art/information/resources for things that need content, website hosting, very very limited html, and other things and am very compelled to this. if anyone wants to help please let me know in this thread or in pm or something. i hope this is the right place for this
Ok. Let's help the world. But, are we helping the planet, or are we helping the human inhabitants, or are we helping the humans more harmoniously integrate amongst themselves and the planet?
I think it is best to concentrate on human interaction; building harmony between each other, between cultures, and between human endeavors and the effects these endeavors have on the planet. None of this is a new idea.
New ideas don't necessarily solve problems. But, the novelty of a new idea can draw support and inspire action. Humans, with their large brains and manual dexterity, evolved to use tools. The mental capacity to adapt found objects (sticks, stones, sounds) into tools (arrows, arrowheads, words) requires the brain to assign a token value to various and sundry objects. (Digits printed on paper can attain tremendous token value.) Non-corporeal patterned firing of synapses can acquire monumental significance and become the foundation of cultures, religions, nations. Ideas (existence of a god or gods, national constitutions) can acquire token values that dwarf any actual material worth, and lead human evolution into bizarre and metanatural directions.
So, how do we measure if helping the world is more than a tokenized gesture? Or, how do we more coherently measure actual value from a more volatile token value? Can one be divorced from the other?

I think we can only do the best that we can do. The reason I posted this (and apologies for my times of erratic communication) is that I know there are a lot of causes important to various Inforoosters. I just think we can make a bigger difference together. I see what you are saying, though, I think. A combined effort would no doubt make a different amount of difference than independent efforts not tied together, but who is to say that any given effort would actually be "help" or if it would be something else?
Like I said, I think we can only do our best and on some things we aren't all going to agree what is a worthy cause. That doesn't mean we all have to help each cause. For instance, I am trying to help reopen my local homeless shelter and I could use help putting together a pamphlet of resources and information as well as artwork crying out to my local community to raise funds and awareness. Now this is just a very basic example, but you might have a shelter that needs attention in your own area. We could do separate projects and petition Inforoosters to help both of us, or we could get creative and figure out how to make one project that somehow benefits both. When you throw different types of causes and viewpoints and cultures and religions into the mix, it might get hard to heal multiple birds with one bandaid, but nothing says we have to only use one bandaid. I am down for helping the planet, the human inhabitants, the animal inhabitants, and humans more harmoniously integrate amongst themselves and the planet. You say you want a revolution, but if you're talking destruction, you know you can count me out, we all want to change the world, don't you know everything is gonna be alright, to haphazardly quote The Beatles.
I got involved in this discussion because I think community service is a noble endeavor. But, my sense of community no doubt is different from yours. I live in the forest, and my neighbors are few and far between. When foliage is full in the forest, I cannot see my closest neighbor's home. I may not see my nearest neighbors for a year or more (usually when they come to pick blackberries from the patch in my yard), though we all know each other as friends. The utmost expression of community service is paying to gravel a small section of the shared private road/right-of-way that allows us ingress and egress off the state road.
All of the forested mountains around my home are managed by the U.S. Forest Service under the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. I am indebted to every tax paying American for the opportunity to walk out of my house and hike, camp, fish, pick berries and mushrooms, gather spring water and wood, etc., etc. on public lands.
If you are serious about becoming an activist for the homeless you might examine the life and tactics of Mitch Snyder. Mr. Snyder was a vocal supporter for assistance for the homeless in Washington, D.C. in the '70s and '80s. Mr. Snyder's activism was legendary for people in the D.C. area at that time. Having grown up in the suburbs of D.C., my recollection of him is of a hero, although he died by his own hand.

this is the weirdest thread ever. Sorry for my cynicism coco but i had to say it. but, i like when people want to do good things, so rock on. My good deed for the day, im going to water my garden so the bees and bugs have have more plant and flowers to do their thing with. I also get delicious fresh vegetable out of it so its not a selfless act.

Wayne Coyne said something about giving and getting, but the initiative is to give first. That's not even close to a paraphrase, but the meaning is the same. He also had us make the peace gesture with our hands, and beam peace waves to the Middle East to end the wars there.
I participated enthusiastically as a peace beacon, but many in the crowd didn't. How hard is it to make a ghadamn peace sign? My thoughts turned dark; we are a hellbent species. The audience response for legalized pot was almost unanimous, but the response to end war was halfhearted and weak.
So what happened to this guy? He deleted his facebook as well, I had thought there was something off all along about him.
Weird. I didn't notice he disappeared 'til you mentioned it. I was having fun with him over in the Arcade. He mentioned he was dealing with mental health issues. His persona on the board seemed to have a good heart. Hope he's ok.

I thought when he started he was a dupe account trying to screw with us, that was more than likely what happened.

I thought that too at first, Jess, but we talked a couple of times in PMs and he (she? dunno) seemed ok. Personality seemed inconsistent on the boards, but otherwise a nice enough person.

He? added me on facebook early on and it was a brand new account, that was why I figured it was someone screwing around.

Many of his posts expressed a desire for sympathy and interaction, and a fair amount of imagination. Hard to explain the vanishing act. Maybe he was watching a neighbor's home while they were on vacation, and using their computer for access. And, he had to erase his tracks before they came home? Or, maybe he's supposed to refrain from Internet access as a requirement for probation? Or, maybe he stole someone's laptop from Bonnaroo, found Inforoo in the browsing history, and got hooked. Then a friend talked sense to him and he deleted his accounts?

One of his/her first posts said something like "I hope I don't get kicked off this board like the others" or something, which actually seemed fishy to me at the time -- just something about the way it was said.

But who knows?
I just typed this in the random thoughts thread but they told me someone had hijacked their computer and have all their passwords and shit. They were really upset and asked if their inforoo acoount started spamming the board then to ask the mods to drop him. BUt then they said they would take care of it. Then they said they wouldn't be back on for a long time. Totally confused I am !

Anything's possible. The quick bailout feels like someone was using a borrowed or stolen laptop, then suddenly had to return, hide or dump it. All his accounts were recently started, then suddenly deleted a short time later. Maybe a friend/accomplice found a buyer for the stolen merchandise, and indigrainbow had to wipe his fingerprints off it?
I guess I'm just too trusting by nature but have a hard time believing that it was all a scam. We talked a couple times on pm too, we're both poetry lovers and like to write so we had that in common. (he did have some really good poetry) He pm'd me really late last night to say that he had been hijacked and although not providing any details, asked me to let the mods know if I got anything else from him and that he'd be back, although not immediately.
so I dunno, call me naive or whatever you like...although it is strange so much in life is. I don't understand fraud in any form - that part of my brain just is not wired. And I really do like to see the good in people. I don't think he means anyone any harm.
I'm just trying to find an explanation for why he canceled all his accounts in such a rush? He can access inforoo or facebook using any computer, even from the local library or work. But, as you and others said, he's a little worried someone else will use his account. Feels like he's trying to cover his tracks, for whatever reason.
roof. i just got my Leno jacked hardcore. im on a different and safe computer now, but i had a topnotch backdoor, some email tools, all kinds of trojans, keylogger, and all kinds of nasties just get thrown on my computer from out of nowhere. it was on a completely irrelevant site and i know it wasnt anyone from here, but this is just a heads up. ive changed all my passwords now but there is still a chance that they got in in time to get what they need, prolly downloaded everything out of my email. some serious hack kid or part of a botnet, im pretty much totally destroyed and im banking on identity thefted now. just letting you know in case this account starts doing really quacked up Leno. if things get bad just go ahead and delete me as much as that breaks my heart. i just dont want me getting infected to cause probs for anyone here. itd be from a diff ip, MAYBE. these kids knew what they were doing, though. sad quackin day. prolly wont be on for awhile while i sort this all out but julie h has the contact info for jeff at ac about the tree to be planted for matt at roo and the 1k from them for matt's trees. love you guys. might wanna let the other friends in preservation know about it too in case they spot any bad juju like a bunch of strange ad links or anything. i know i havent been here long enough for you all to know what is and isnt characteristic of a post from me but i guess if in doubt just go ahead and kill my account. i really dont think they are going to focus on an inforoo account that is relatively new, but in case in between me getting hacked and me changing the password and email from a diff computer they managed to mass pm a bunch of people trying to hack more peoples Leno via corrupt links, youll know whats up. anyway see you at next roo, whatever happens.
