I have a 1998 Nissan 200sx. Recently I started seeing white smoke billow out of the exhaust system. At around the same time I got a CEL with code P1446. It's the "Evaporator Canister Purge Valve". It's an emissions parts. White smoke usually means burning coolant, so at first I thought my head gasket had blown. But would the purge valve be able to explain the smoke? I googled but wasn't able to find an answer.
Not a real expert but it seems to me the ECP valve would not likely be causing the white smoke. The EVP valve basically just allows trapped fuel vapors from when the car was shut off to be returned to the cylinders when the car is restarted. It seems unlikely that this could cause white smoke.
A bad head gasket could theoretically foul the intake line from the EVP and cause the code. Or the code could be caused by a blocked, disconnected or damaged vacuum lines between the purge valve and the intake manifold. It could be a pinched vapor line between the fuel tank and EVAP valve. It could be a bad EVAP valve or a bad PCM. A loose gas cap could also cause the code, that would be the first thing to check.
But your big problem is still the white smoke. Besides a head gasket it could be transmission fluid sucked in through a vacuum line or a small amount of oil coming in through a bad PCV valve which looks white (assuming it's a small amount of smoke so it only appears white.) Smelling the smoke could help determine as coolant usually smells sweet and not "oily". Head gasket is still the most likely culprit, though.

I saw this thread while I was goofing around so ..... This is pretty basic stuff but I don't know cars. During the winter, my heater would work but it would never get really hot. Two weeks ago it was in the lower 80's and during stop and go rush hour my car overheated and threw out all my coolant. There were no hoses broken and nothing seemed wrong and it has been running fine. Question being: Is that maybe my thermostat?
Yea me too. I know this guy who actually has a shop but it's a little corner place. He can check usually what is wrong but if I know what's up and just take in the part, he puts it in dirt cheap. Last time I had something done: Dealer=$400 OEM Repair=$300 , my guy $110 for parts and $50 to put it in

Sound like the thermostat. If it doesn't open the hot water can't get to the heater so the heat doesn't work well. And the water can't circulated so it overheats.
The thermostat is usually pretty cheap and easy to replace. You usually only have to loosen a clamp on the hose, pull the hose loose, remove the old t-stat, put in the new one, replace the hose and re-tighten the clamp. But ask the auto parts place where the t-stat is at just to be sure.

The past few days I've stopped having any smoke and the engine feels very strong. I pulled the PCV valve and it was very gunked. Cleaned it out. Maybe that was the problem?
I talked to a mechanic friend and he said it's unlikely that it's be creating so much smoke and have a compression test not show weak cylinders.
