I had the opportunity to volunteer this past Saturday at a day-long clinic for the uninsured sponsored by this organization here in the Atlanta area. There were 1700 people preregistered for the clinic and a huge line of walk-ins - as I understand it some people still had to be turned away.
This organization did a phenomenal job (with some help from the community of course) in putting this event together. Everything ran smoothly and was very organized. At the end of the day I was exhausted but felt so good about what I had done. It was like a mission trip here at home.
If you happen to hear of a similar event in your city please consider donating some of your time. You do not have to be a trained healthcare professional - as there are needs for many support staff as well.
This was a wonderful way to help those in need and also is an eye-opener as to the current state of how many people in this country do not have insurance coverage.
In case you are wondering, I treated people from all walks of life. Of course many were unemployed but a handful were employed and had no employer offered insurance, and could not afford to purchase it on their own.
thanks for reading this and please consider helping out in some way, either with this organization or with a free clinic in your area.

No doubt. I just like to drop a little encouragement when I can. Just wanted you to know you were appreciated. Thanks for the information too.
P.S. - Can you give me some more information about this one in Atlanta? I live about an hour and a half from Atlanta and my wife is about to enter nursing school. This sounds like something we could really get behind. And we work with youth and college kids at church. One thing we're really trying to emphasize is that Christianity doesn't end when you walk out of a building, but just really starts. I would love to take some of the more mature ones to volunteer at a place like that. Thanks again.
as far as I know the Atlanta event is a one time thing, I suppose future occurrences would depend on funding. I spoke to one of the event staff who I happened to have met before professionally and she told me that a lot of this "tour" was made possible by funding from MSNBC and a particular talk show host whose name I cannot recall. I would hope that it would at least be annual but who knows.
but ... look at the website, there should be local opportunities on a much smaller scale in your community or nearby. If you can't find them then perhaps try to speak with someone at a local doctors office or health department and they will have the information.
as far as your wife...good for her! Great profession to be in...I'm a nurse practitioner, so any help I can provide (if any) will be glad to. just pm me and I'll give you my email if you want to have her email me. Nursing school , and nursing, are both hard work but the rewards are great. Plus the market for healthcare professionals is stable regardless of the economy or what happens in Washington - at least much more so than many other professions. And at the end of the day you can usually find something to feel good about - a winning combination.

Bloomington has a Volunteers in Medicine program for the uninsured. Local doctors just donate their time every week and see patients for free. I have no idea how they pay their staff. I'd love to be a part of something like this but I barely have any free time as it is.

Ed Schultz?
it was something like Oberman or Overman... I don't watch MSNBC so I was not familiar with the name at all.

yeah, the giving up free time part was hard, especially on a gorgeous spring weekend and after the week from hell at work...plus it was an exhausting day. But the intangible benefits are so great. Plus its kinda fun giving care in that type of setting because you have to improvise and make do with the resources that you have available. Like doing a mission trip right here at home.

Ah, gotcha... you mean Keith Olbermann.
I guessed Ed Schultz because he likes to bang the populist drum and has taken his show on the road in a series of health-care forums. While I can applaud that, the guy still kinda grates on me.
