It's always sad when someone dies an untimely death but, that being said, does anyone really even know who this guy is? He was engaged to Nicole Ritchie, he co-wrote/sampled Crazy Town's "Butterfly" (quite possibly the worst song ever...if you don't count "Holla Back Girl" or "My Humps"...neither of witch so blatantly ripped off any other song >*RHCP*<) and he had the misfortune to catch on fire with Blink 182's Travis Barker. I'm sorry if I sound callous but, I'd bet anything it was an overdose. And when you couple that with his ridiculous contributions to "pop" culture, I just can't find any concern on this one. Yeah, I'm sorry he died but, I'm sorry for everyone else (every other mother, father, son or daughter) who died today too. This guy was nothing special, in any way. He was a tabloid sideline at best. I'm sorry he died but, almost anything, even Perez Hilton getting arrested would be more news-worthy than this. RIP...but...WTF?

The fact he lived, barely, through a place crash then died in this manner is newsworthy. It's posted don't like it move on...If it doesn't matter don't comment

I think it's newsworthy for every reason you mentioned, gatheringking. It's not like every average person in society can say they were engaged to Nicole Ritchie, co-wrote a huge hit song (which at the time I thought was a good song, in a "ha! this song is ridiculous!" sort of good) and all that. He was a notable figure in pop culture, and that's why his death is newsworthy.
All that being said, his death is no more or less tragic in my eyes than any mother, father, son, or daughter's death of whom I've never heard of. A death is a tragedy, and there are always people who are deeply affected by it on a personal level, regardless of whether that person is famous or not.

Okay. I'll admit that I was rather drunk when I posted. But that post came on the heels of a friend's "man, can you believe that Micheal Jackson, Les Paul and DJ AM all died so close together?" conversation. Maybe I was harsh, and for that I am deeply sorry but, I stand by my assertion that (in this TMZ world we live in) not everyone in the news is actually "news worthy" and that this guy was not much more than a flash-in-the-pan, flavor-or-the-week nobody who did nothing but screw a tabloid queen , rip-off a credible band to cash-in on a b.s. teeny bopper song, not die...then overdose. I'm truly sorry for his family, but that's where it ends in my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I feel and, like it or not, I will express my opinion. Penalize me all you want but, in a country that provides the priceless right of free speech and the free exchange of differing ideas, I will not be intimidated or shamed into tempering my thoughts. Hate me if you want. That is your right.

I don't think anyone was penalizing or trying to intimidate you......only responding to your question of "Why is this guy famous / why does he matter". Nobody here called you an a$$hole or anything like that....I think people were just trying to give you their take on the matter.
Personally I am more on your side.....being that I didn't really know or care about him. He was big enough that I've heard his name before but in this 24 hour news world we see that even the family members of famous people get huge news coverage.....so i'm definitely not surprised that his story is being reported and people miss him.

He was one of the original mash up artists, or so I've read recently. He kinda paved the way for GirlTalk. He was open about his addiction to crack and ecstacy. He'd been clean for some time now and just finished a show for Mtv about helping kids with their addictions. A crack pipe was found in his apartment, so i'm sure he OD'd on something. It's sad because the show probably helped him relapse. RIP

I think it's a sad statement about some of the people on this message board when they start hitting another member's "custie" button because I didn't respond to a post the way they thought I should. So, yes. Someone is, most definitely, trying to "penalize" me for having a differing opinion. Well, if that's how you want to handle it, be my guest. Do it all damn day, if it makes you feel better. It won't ever be enough to make me stifle or alter my viewpoint.

Yeah. I had to just get rid of my Crunchy/Custie.
I see where you are coming from though. There are plenty of other deaths happening in the world that are more newsworthy, however we don't see it often because while it is a significant death some may deem it insignificant for many reasons. I guess we can't hear about them all. So they broadcast the ones like celebrity deaths, bizarre deaths, or mass deaths, or serial killers. Just to name a few.
I however don't know much about DJ AM. But hey, he died and my thoughts are with his family.
