Someone needs to put these guys in the Clockwork Orange chair and force them to watch the Terminator series 500 times. This is only the most recent thing, from human neural tissue growing in mice brains, to the Japanese trying to drill through the Earths crust to the mantle. (Hell they invented Godzilla they should know better) Scientists really sometimes start to run amok. Show me a few examples of Scientists who need some scifi guys.

Well, there are the people at CERN, who created the Large Hadron Collider. The purpose of this machine is to smash protons together to recreate the Big Bang. Yes, that's the giant explosion that scientists think created our universe. They're redoing that. On Earth. Crunchy, brahs.

yeah thats the scariest shit. there are people right now trying to remake the universe with a decent chance of creating a black hole and sucking us all in. theyll probably create a black hole sometime in 2012 ive often wondered if the end of human existence would be caused by some great natural disaster or our own foolish endeavors in technology, looking for progression that eventually leads to our demise.

If you are speaking of the Hadron collider, it will definately create mini black holes but they will evaporate immediately.

Riffing on fishingmaniac's post, it's pretty clear that scientists do read sci-fi. Most of the cool technological stuff we enjoy today, like the Intrawebs, is just a version of something somebody like Arthur C Clark thought of first. Every time I hear that walkie-talkie phone beep noise -- you know the one I'm talking about -- I can't help but think of the original Star Trek.

Navy scientists have also gotten some head way in Cold Fusion. Yes, that stuff that was supposedly impossible. Apparently they have evidence its possible after all. Cant seem to find the article atm. Will post it tho.
Also, anyone read Illium or Olympos by Dan Simmons? Good sci-fi! When you transport in that world, you sort of die. Your molecules, etc., are recorded and you are reconstructed on the other side. Kinda scary.

Those books are incredible.
But, in my opinion, his Hyperion saga is even better.

Lol, great topic, but there are some scientists out there who not only read it but also are keenly aware to how it adapts to their real working lives.
For instance, some of the folks at CERN's LHC (which by the way is not intended to recreate the big bang or a black hole or any other dangerous condition, scientists debunked those theories years ago) took a picture of themselves posing as Gordon Freeman with a crowbar sent to them from the reddit community, since the LHC is very much like Black Mesa, the location for Half Life 1.

CERN says the LHC is supposed to recreate the conditions just after the Big Bang. It's true that it won't create a black hole or anything, and it isn't anything to worry about.

I think most of the posts here have been in jest, but I seriously do worry about robotic law enforcement. Robocop seems a lot more likely than Terminator.
