It was weird, in 06 they directed us to VIP section A, then once we got to that area the guy was like "pick a spot, any spot" , so I got a nice end spot where is was not surrounded by generators running.
In 07, they directed us to the area by the arch, VIP area C & D then it was a mix of campers and tents...it all worked out though.
This year I would like to position our camper so that the awning (curb side) of the camper is pointed north. That will provide additional shading along with the awning.
How was 08? what sections were RV and what were tent?
i dont remember exactly, but i know that the middle and section closest to the entrance were all car camping. the rv's were def behind us... but i kinda remember some against the right wall (if you were facing the stage).
when we rolled in the lot in 07, it was just a complete free for all...
I was planning on bringing a generator this year to power various things (mainly an air conditioner) and thought it would be a good idea to get an rv pass so I wouldn't bother other campers in tents. But if they are mixed together it wouldn't matter.

Depending on the generator you have the people in tents might not want to hear the noise. ???
'08 VIP was very organized with designated sections for RV's, cars, and even a tent only area. We did see some cars which either ignored the parking attendant or moved aftewards into RV areas however it appears that there was plenty of room for everyone.

I would be far less than thrilled to be next to someone in a tent with a generator.
if you want to be nice, or attempt to be as quiet as possible while using a generator, there are some good tips on a number of burning man sites. For instance:
It is very hard to quiet a already loud generator. I see tons of people boxing their generators in in the hope to quiet them. If they are boxed in too much they will overheat. My recommendation is to rent or purchase a quiet Honda or Yamaha generator, this will make your stay along with your neighbors visit much more enjoyable.
What size air conditioner are you planning to use? With a tent in the heat of the day you would need around 1 to 2 tons of cooling, being a tent material has no insulation properties. A one ton AC unit (12,000 BTU's) that runs on 120 volts AC will draw in the neighborhood of 10 amps, so you would need at least a 1750 watt generator. The AC unit will run at 1200 watts but you will need extra to start the compressor.

Good luck..
I have a small Honda eu3000isa that is already pretty quiet. I've done some tests with my portiable A/C with out any problems. I'll be getting an RV pass though since the camping and RV areas are separated. Thanks for all your help.
last year we parked in vip where we pulled in. on friday, walking in to centeroo i realized there were massive empty spots up closer to the gates....did anyone else notice this and is it ok to not park where you end up in line and just move up to an empty spot?
re the generator, I had 2 tents down last year, and it was definitly not cool. It was tough to get any sleep, and they left it on even when they were not there.
re moving around, a lot of people moved closer to the main stage after the main parking rush. I was close enough to throw a stone at the gate, and it started empty and filled up after the rush died

We saw a number of people do this as we arrived last year and the attendants did not care at all. My guess is that since the camping areas are marked off all they really need worry about is keeping RV's, cars, and tent only in separate areas.
Hey folks we are thinking of getting a 20'x10' shade canopy for our campsite. Do you think this size would be ok in the VIP area?
Also would auger style anchors work? Not familiar with the soil...
We could cover not only our tent but a portion of of our car as well to make it work. But we would like to create a sitting area with table and chairs and a large cooler full of refreshments:)
Of course we could always share our shade and beverages.
