Since that "big" announcement Thursday has left many of us a bit disappointed, I thought we could use a little reminder as to why we wait in anxious anticipation for every announcement and artist addition year after year. So I raise the following question:
Looking back on your previous Roo experiences, what are the three things that cause that excitement in anticipation for another year on the farm?

3. Day 1 on the farm. Once camp was set up and the frustrations of entering the farm had passed, I made my way under the arch and into Centeroo and although I didn't have a clue which stage was that stage or if the other tent was that tent, I didn't feel lost. I never expected to be standing in the middle of a Tennessee farm and say that I was home!
2. My Morning Jacket, Late Night, '06. What more needs to be said?
1. During the great storms of '04, soon after the word had spread of the passing of Ray Charles, I, like many, was running for cover from the rain. As passing a tent (I forget which one) I heard Ray playing from the speakers. As I stood there in the pouring rain taking in the moment it seemed as if everyone on the farm was sharing this moment and silently paying tribute to the huge loss to the music community. All of Roo seemed to be 'in the moment'.
I missed Roo last year and the summer just wasn't the same! Can't wait to be on the farm in June!!

All from last year
1. Salty-dogging to the Flaming Lips with my friends. It's a line-square dance thing that a tradition at my school (and, needless to say, is not generally done to Lips-esq movement). 2. Mavis Staples guesting during The Decemberists set. 3. The Roots doing Masters of War
I don't listen, so here's 4 from the last 3 Roo's for me:
2007 1) Waiting all day with RooRunner, other pals and occasionally Bama and my missus for The Police; it was a Rootrotter team born from these boards and it's created friendships that still last (I've drank with RooRunner twice now outside of Roo). 2) Sunday morning, Mavis Staples. 3) Being a pirate ALL ROO (includes pillaging, finding other pirates for raids, hooking) 4) Finding that they published my Father's Day message to my da
2006 1) Meeting a crapload of my favorite artists (World Party, Bare Jr., Mike Doughty Gomez and a dozen others) 2) Radiohead blowing the other 5 times (since 1992) I've seen them out of the universe 3) Sasha til dawn (also as a pirate) 4) Dancing with Rebirth on a float (also as a pirate)
2005 1) The Frames 2) Meeting Herbie Hancock, having him sign my pith helmet 3) ALO opening Roo with a "Welcome to Your Bonnaroo" version of "BBQ" 4) Chatting with Kermit Ruffins, my fave New Orleans-style jazz trumpeter

To this day, my favorite Roo moment is that guy that was raising hell on top of the porta potties after the GRAB Superjam.
He started out "drumming" along with the band, and then when they went into the final breakdown he was jumping up and down, and when they stopped playing he just went absolutley apeshit, jumping on the roofs and running around the whole semi-circle of portas, just freaking out. Whenever any soul was brave enough to actually walk into one to do whatever they had to do, he was right on top of em, jumping on the roof so hard it really looked like he was about to go through.
The best part was that nobody even attempted to stop him, nor was there anyone around to even kinda have that responsibility. He was just raging...we were taking pictures and going up and slapping five and everything. Eventually, after ten minutes, we left, and he was still raising hell. I assume he eventually came down off of there.

Oh man, I don't know if I can pick just three... 1. Walking to Centeroo after arriving on Thursday and hearing the rolling "BONNAROOOOOOO"s throughout the crowd...and just being able to feel how happy everybody is that it's finally time! 2. Sitting under the tree at Which Stage in the morning with my friends, playing cards and eating and chatting and knowing that you've got a full day of amazing music ahead of you. 3. Manu Chao, 2007. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life, if not the best. SO MUCH ENERGY. Everything just turned into a gigantic dance party. I'm usually too self-conscious to do much dancing but there was no way anyone could resist it at that show; I was actually in pain by the end of the show from dancing so much.
1. THROWING DOWN IN THE ARCADE TENT ON THURSDAY NIGHT (annual ritual for me, gotta get in there and get my groove on to get amped for the long weekend).
2. VIP Pre-party baby! (first time it feels like ROO all day after the long day of driving>getting in>setting up)
3. Spinning in Circles til the sun comes up. (sometimes its the only thing I remember ;-)
Beck into Radiohead... just in general. Crowd energy, vibe, music, fun factor... everything = perfect.
Seeing only 30 minutes of Dungen, and being turned onto them as one of my fav current bands.
The final hours of Roo, hollering and having a fucking great time at camp.
In 07:
Ornette Coleman... what hasn't already been said?
The people I ran into/met/mingled with at DJ Shadow's set... some of the most interesting folk. Ever.
Sitting at the campsite with my group on Sunday night, reminiscing and telling our Roo stories of the weekend, while hearing Widespread Panic in the back ground. Fun time, especially considering the party favors involved.
- Meeting you guys at Inforoo brunch 2007. - The Frames, giving Glen a "1,2,3,4" when requested...and hearing myself on the recording. - Wayne Coyne admitting that he loves success because it lets him "do all this crazy sh!t" after the laser thing. - Toots making the sun come out.
Glowsticks at Radiohead was phenomenal, as was pretty much everything Buddy Guy did. From jumping into the crowd, to letting out a big "Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeit" everytime he blew the crowd away, that man, who is older than my grandma, put out more energy then the guys half his age.
Last year one of my favorite moments was hearing the opening notes to "When the Levee Breaks" at the Superjam. I knew it was on from there. And walking back to Centeroo just in time to hear Galactic blow down Kashmir was a highlight.
God I cannot wait any longer. I wonder what this year will bring?

1) 06 - Tom Petty closing with "American Girl"...and me dancing my butt off, because it's my favorite Petty song...my first "holy crap this is amazing" moment 2) 07 - HAULING it to get to the Which Stage when the Flaming Lips did the "War Pigs" sound check 3) 07 - Mavis Staples. Sunday Morning. Dancing like crazy to "This Little Light of Mine"...could have easily been a Roo revivial...

Seeing Mikey for the last time at the first Bonnaroo, and Dottie Peoples sitting in with Panic. Tom Fucking Morello playing Lateralus. Putting my car in park when I get to my campsite every year. Makes me sooooo happy that I usually get a little verklempt in my genektegazoink. Giving newbies the tour, which ALWAYS includes the silent disco. Radiohead. Holy poop. Tom Petty's surprisingly good light show, and hearing the crowd chatter "OMFG! Stevie Nicks! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHI'MGONNAHAVEANANEURISM!!!!".
Stevie Nicks coming out was pretty f'n crazy, that one always slips my mind... as does Morello playing with Tool. Both amazing, amazing moments that make me long for this coming one.
2005: The tree-climbers at the Jack Johnson set. The rain. Dave playing "Time of the Season" by the Zombies... J5 in the mornin' THE MARS VOLTA Saul Williams blowing my mind The Secret Machines yummy brownies
2006: Radiohead (i've been a massive fan for way too long, and this is the first time i got to see them) Matisyahu's energetic show Bright Eyes waking up on sunday morning and drinking with my brother the spontaneous drumming in the camping area. one person started with an actual drum, then someone several tents away joined in with who knows what, and so on. I played my cooler with a stick. There must have been at least 10 of us scattered about contributing to our own superjam with whatever we had at our campsites Sonic Youth
2007: Mute Math The White Stripes (insane show) the Burger King walking around during the Police show (creepy as hell) iced cappuccino Tom Morello playing with Tool THE FLAMING LIPS The Decemberists (the Tain, Mariner's Revenge.....) DJ Shadow. Wow. hanging out with strangers on the Greyhound headed toward Roo. They seemed like strangers for about two minutes...

2004:
1. MMJ playing up until the thunderstorm...my first MMJ show..awesome stuff. 2. some dude rolling so hard at the trey show that he just kept licking the sky. i imagine he was envisioning a lollipop of somesuch. i could not stop watching him. 3. the fireworks during trey 4. the ridiculous storm sat night during the dead. me and the wife (then gf) had to sit in the tent so it wouldnt blow away..it started to fall apart..we got wet. 4b. watchin everyone elses stuff fly away during said storm. 5. dude parked across from us selling filafels, just kept yelling "AND A PICKLE!" all weekend..it was hilarious. he sold his rv for a ride home. 6. kings of leon's afternoon set was pretty killer. 7.oh forgot burning spear and david byrne within hours of each other..two living legends. two great sets.
2006:
1. radiohead obviously.. 2. mmj late night, obviously 3. radiohead/dr john as the nighttripper/superjam (GRAB)..all within hours of each other..pretty ridiculous night..my best ever on the farm. 4. malkmus>sonic youth.
Sure, I will play along 2006 - TPATH playing Don't Come Around Here No More w/ Stevie Nicks. Strobe lights lighting up the entire What Stage was incredible.
2007 - Flaming Lips playing Moonlight Mile. Incredible, I remember the green lights and disco ball on the video screen. Such a relaxing, soak it all in moment. The White Stripes set. I was beat, felt like I had tuberculosis coming on, and sun stoned. But The White Stripes rengerized me like music has never done before. It was awesome.
