This has been brought up periodically in the various other threads going around, but I thought it's time to really get the discussion going. Ignoring your personal preferences or predictions, if it is band-related, what do you think would qualify to be the "big" announcement?
Personally, I think for it to have been billed as such, it has to be REALLY big to not be a letdown. Thus Tom Waits, my personal choice, I don't think would cut it. Of acts I've heard mentioned, I'd say those that qualify are: -Led Zeppelin -Eric Clapton (in whatever form) -Neil Young -Pink Floyd, but not Roger Waters alone -Talking Heads, but not David Byrne alone -Rolling Stones -U2 -Dave Matthews Band -Phish
Groups that don't qualify: -Stone Temple Pilots -Widespread Panic -Stevie Wonder -Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation -Tom Waits
This isn't to say I think it WILL be someone in the above category, just that it should be.

I'm putting my money on that part of the big annoucement is that we get thursday as a Full day of music starting at noon. Why because State Radio has listed 2-3:15 pm at the other tent on their website and vampire weekend has thursday at 1 pm listed.

Could we consider an addition that featured something like Black Crowes, Mule, or WSP replacing the Allmans, a band or two like Primus, and a handfull of lesser acts as "big"?
Or, in light of Prince and this unprecedented 'big' pre-announcement, does it have to be a genuinely major (and possibly surprising) act?
i personally think everyone is aiming too high with their guesses. I would consider everyone on your first list much more than "big". I would consider them "HUGE".

big is such a relative term. who really knows.
big is a relative term if you are talking in size, however it means "of major concern, importance" which is not relative. the difference in big and huge is semantics and we must not forget, like that other guy said, they mentioned it was an exciting announcement as well. big and exciting? if its not why use such powerful descriptive words for a let down.
edit: trey would probably be regarded as one of the BIGgest additions you could get

Led Zeppelin - hahaha - no - Plant's busy with Krauss - could happen next year maybe
Clapton - would have to be a headliner - won't happen
Pink Floyd or Roger Waters - also a must headliner - won't happen
Rolling Stones - again, a headliner - won't happen
U2 - yet again, a headliner - won't happen
Dave is in CT on Fri and Sat and NY on Mon - more than likely he won't be there
Talking Heads will never happen again so let it go but David Byrne did just get announced for ACL, so maybe, not a definite headliner could be a pre-headliner
Jack Johnson won't be Thurs, definitely Sunday
most of these aren't big acts, they're huge acts, headliners
i'd say big would be black crowes, but i don't know about them this year, they just announced a huge tour going until december, they are playing the riverbend festival in chattanooga and i've heard bonnaroo and riverbend try not to share acts since they're basically around and during the same time, i think riverbend goes for like 2 weeks and the last week of it is during bonnaroo, but the black crowes are playing st louis after riverbend fest but before bonnaroo and i've also heard that a lot of bands make close stops before bonnaroo, cities like st louis, nashville, atlanta, indianapolis, cincinnati, louisville, chattanooga, any surronding states
and i think the breeders are a shoe in with them playing in atlanta on bonnaroo friday
Where would Trey fit in with this whole categorization of 'big', 'huge', etc..?
For the Bonnaroo crowd, Trey is big, huge, and all of the above. I think announcing the triumphant return of Trey would be well worth it in bringing the vibe of the Roo back to center.

Bonnaroo has never gone out of their way to claim they were making a "Big Announcement." If this was simply an ABB replacement, they would have said "ABB Replacement Will Be Announced Thursday." Coachella didn't hype up Prince, so I would have to say that big is bigger than Prince.
A big announcement could be an additional day or music, the moving of a festival, the addition of a new stage/tent, the ability to do something that has never been done before at the festival.
Or big could be a play on words... Polyphonic Spree and/or I'm From Barcelona would be a "big" announcement.
Those at Bonnaroo already stated no more headliners would be added... so I think that rules Led Zeppelin out of it because that would have been worked on at the point when they said that. I do think another headliner could be added, because of Allman Brothers cancel and Prince at Coachella, but I don't think it'll be Led Zep because that would mean the heads at Bonnaroo would have known it was a possibility when they said no more headliners would be added.
Here's who I see as big... Led Zeppelin Eric Clapton Coldplay Dave Matthews Band Phish ACDC Guns N Roses Dispatch
Or I think it could be a lesser known reunion... The Pixies DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince

People in show business, on rare occasion, have been known to lie.

That's true... guess we gotta take everything with a grain of salt.
I dunno. This would be the perfect time to announce Led Zeppelin. You sell out all of your tickets, and the people that wanted to go to the festival already got theirs. Plus, you hurry up and steal the competition away from Lollapalooza and ACL who just announced their lineups.
The only thing is... Bonnaroo really didn't go out of its way to say it would make a big announcement. I would think a "Big" announcement of LZ caliber would have been hinted at in a post of its own. Instead, it kind of shuffled the announcement into the middle of the Allman Bros cancellation article. And didn't even elaborate or try to create any extra hype with another sentence on the announcement.
This is a good question - In the past additions of Black Crowes and Oysterhead weren't preceded with a buildup like this, so my hopes are that it's bigger than either of these. I think this should at least be the benchmark...
I think big is going to be the announcement of the jazz tent line-up, a possible ABB replacement, another big name act and the rest of bands not announced for tents and stages.
I would say that would be pretty big announcement. Maybe not on the scale of getting Led Zeppelin, but big in its own right. I don't think Superfly is going to try to compete with Goldenvoice by pulling out headliners out their ass, but try to make Bonnaroo a great festival up and down. We have said in the past that headliners don't make Bonnaroo. And I think with that we are going to get something along those lines.
Where would Trey fit in with this whole categorization of 'big', 'huge', etc..?
He fits in New York, where he must stay indefinitely.
wrong - if he finished up drug court and is just on probation (whichs is vastly different then parole) all he has to do is get permission from his probation officer to go - he can make arrangements to take drug tests on the road is that is a condition of his probation. The only thing that was keeping him in New York was the fact that he had to make weekly appearances at drug court, complete counseling sessions and community service

Definately not going to be Jane's. Eric Avery, the bass player, is the only original member to hold out of all of their previous reunions. The only reason he is getting together with the rest of the band for this one-off, is because they are recieving the lifetime acheivement award.
from the article: "I have always considered reunions to be a way to make a quick buck, and it sells short my own experience of it the first time around," Avery said in a statement. "The reason I started to even consider this is because it's honoring the past instead of trying to recreate it."
