I thought Echo was overall an AMAZING time and an awesome festival!! The dust kinda sucked but it was no where near as bad as Roo (imo) but I def agree with the water issue and the portos being quite a far walk from the main stage. The weather was beautiful the whole time... sunny and warm but I was never drenched in sweat dying for shade; the nights sure were cold but that is an easy fix...
The size of the crowd was just so perfect... they estimated it at about 7000. What a massive difference from 80,000! It was so comfortable the whole time and you could easily get to the front of whatever show you wanted... lines were generally short and it just made for a very comfortable and easy time.
I agree with Alyroo that the bands realy seemed to bring it this past weekend... a lot of them hung around to check out other bands and that was cool (Magner from the Disco Biscuits was about a foot from me during Umphreys).
My favs from the weekend: PHIL (I thought he rocked it... sickest St. Stephen ever, not to mention Shakedown!), Theivery Corporation was incredible at sunset, Pgroove (thought it was one of the best Pgroove shows Ive ever seen), the Wood Brothers, the Duo, Bisco, moe., Toubab Krewe, Boombox (this was incredible - Donna Jean's son playing and singing with an awesome DJ)
This may be blasphemy to some people but I personally was just not all that impressed with the Flaming Lips... I had a few friends who thought they were awesome so, to each his own I guess...
Echo really was an awesome festival and I hope they bring it back next year because I would LOVE LOVE LOVE go again!!!

they didnt sell enough tickets. For the price it was at the end, plus the $30 for parking on thursday, I'm not suprised. The guy only made us pay 20 bucks for being one of the first civs allowed in the area, i think there were maybe 30 other cars there when we arrived waiting to get in....I was so suprised and happy, bc it was the first time they had it, which = less of a clusterfu#k.
i havent heard anythin about the over-all 'Green' aspect of this fest..the environmentally kind of green ... do tell?
There was one stage totally powered by solar energy... maybe wind too? I believe most of the vendors used alt. power too.
After every set somebody reminded us to clean up. The sites were faily well picked up. Not much left over trash at all. I wasn't alone is picking up trash and everybody had pockets w/ ciggie butts in them.
Rabbit In The Moon blew the lid off that no glowie thing tho... lol
Only 7000? Wasn't it supposed to be 30-40000? Or did they just not sell enough tickets?
It looked to me, to be more like 15,000-20,000. Definately not 30,000. The charging for parking thing was kinda lame. It was supposed to be free if you car-pooled. We got there at 1:30 Friday morning with four in the car and they still charged us $20.
the 20 bucks was for the early bird ticket and then 10 for parking unless you had 3 or more in the car. it seemed bigger then 7000. i had friends vending and echo project told them they presold over 8000 tickets online. im guessing around 10000 total. it was noticeably smaller then all good. security was awesome too. they let us bring in what ever we wanted. it reminded me of roo when i first went. im glad it wasnt uch bigger cuz they barely kept up on the portos and i never saw tp in one.
On Sunday night after Phil when a ton of people had cleared out these two guys who had been working the fest came up to our campsite (we were literally right off of the main road) and sat and had a drink and talked to us for a bit... Im not sure what their exact jobs were but they were the ones that told me they took part in the estimate and it came in at 7000... there were several campsites on the other side of the venue that never even got touched. They had on the badges and stuff that showed they were working so I assume they were telling the truth... I was also surprised when they said 7000 and told them I had heard 14000 tickets were sold before the fest but they just said they didnt know anything about that and the est. was 7000...
7000 seems kinda low to me too. I was thinking at least 15-20K, but no more than that.....I only had to pay $10 for parking on Friday night. Sounds like they were a bit....ummm....random maybe? But small gripe for such a rockin' time! ;D
Yeah, it was hysterical on Sat when the dust starting kicking up, everyone starting buying up the $4 bandanas.....you could tell we were all paranoid refugees from the great 'Roo dust storm of '07 - ;D
See that star thingy at DB? Anybody else like that a little to much at times?
Hell, I like it a little bit too much right now, in fact... I think I need to post this reply real quick so I can get back to it asap!
You don't even know!!! That's the same star thingy in the Spree pic. It looked completely different at night and it sorta "moved" with the lights... spiffy.

I was right in front for majority of the Secret Machines, i had never heard of them but my friend wanted to check them out. The lead singer looked like he was either A.) like everyone; Super Cold or B.) Like everyone else, out of his mind on alternative drugs. or C.) Both! But as for the show..they rocked it out..i dont know any of the songs but the guitarist was pretty sick as well as for the drums. I didnt like the singing style of the singer but overall a good show.

the parking was indeed random... we got charged $30... WTF?
the bandana thing was too funny, they were selling them so fast. You could tell we were all traumatized... lol
Okay... now that I've had some time to get my head straight.... my review.
The whole fest was awesome. One of the best crowds I've seen at a fest. Everyone was really cool. Camping was close enough to the venue for easy travel back and forth. The layout of the stages made it easy to jump from one set to another. And the sound was increadible!
Best set, no contest. MOE. ;D Blew my mind. The light show was rediculous. They boys brought their A game. They were on fire. And they knew exactly who they were playing for. Chuck Garvey is a guitar God!
Other highlights,
The Disco Biscuits>Bassnectar>DiscoBiscuits. This show had to have the funnest crowd of any show at the fest. Another killer light show (pictures coming).
Les Claypool. Les is so cool. I love that guy.... and his bionic pinky.
Polyphonic Spree. This was just so much fun. Great afternoon set.
Rabit In The Moon. No Glowsticks my ass!
Solid performances from The Killers, ALO, Tea Leaf Green, Umphrey's, The Duo, JJ Grey, and Michael Franti.
Pretty much everyone was in top form. The artists all seemed to "get it", unlike some artists that played at Roo (sting comes to mind).

I think that we can all agree that the inaugural year of The Echo Project was a tremendous success! Yeah, it was small but, that only made it better in my opinion.
Anyway, here's a brief review of my weekend:
Shows we saw: Dubconscious (thurs pre-party. great way to start things off) Elevado (partial. bullshit, pure and simple) Stephen Marley (partial. good but a little cliche at times) The Polyphonic Spree (an incredible live act! one of the best shows of the fest!) Slick Rick/GZA (huge let-down but i don't know what i expected) Les Claypool (partial. intended to see his whole set but left for Random Rabbit) Random Rabbit (great show! huge surprise! one of the best sets of the fest) Sorted & TechnoloJesus (great DJ set! Funky and eclectic. Good stuff) Sonar (partial. good stuff. would've stayed longer but had to explore) Bassnectar (partial. great set. pefect interlude to the Biscuits show) Disco Biscuits (partial. not a 'jam' guyt but they fucked-it-the-fuck-up) Something Japanese (pretty good band. good way to start the day) Futureman (biggest disappointment of all. hype+gimmick=cheesey) Hope For AGoldenSummer (nondescript folk. okay but nothing special) God Is An Astronaut (holyshit! great band. great show) Disco Biscuits (again, not normally my thing. now i'm a believer) Thievery Corporation (i've been waiting for years...and it was worth the wait) Rabbit In The Moon (partial.i was so excited about them but it's the same show it was 10 yrs ago) Double Nil/Bombazi (partial. nice, smooth dnb/electro set.) Spencer Durham Band (okay. pretty good jam music from guys who looked 13) Afromotive (greatfuckingband! lush, worldbeat-jam goodness) RJD2 (as always, good stuff. funky, danceable, just plain fun) Dirty Dozen Brass Band (two thumbs WAY up!) The Roots (first time i've seen them live and they were better than i had ever heard)
All in all, we had a great time!
Biggest regrets? -Not getting to meet more of my InfoFriends. -Not getting to spend enough time with the ones I did meet. Biggest pluses? -Getting to meet Dude (and his posse), Chefchick, WBM and Alyroo! Biggest drag? -Having one of our chairs stolen. -Some asstongue breaking the antenna off of our car. -SUNBURN! Biggest perks? -I found $20 at God Is An Astronaut. -Sitting on the hill behind "shakedown" and watching the campsites come to life.
Best sets: Random Rabbit Thievery Corporation Sorted & TechnoloJesus The Polyphonic Spree God Is An Astronaut Afromotive
Worst sets: Slick Rick/GZA Futureman Elevado
I also would like to give a 'shout-out' to the coolest security staff ever!
That's about it for now.
