as far as festivals go you might want to just try and hit up chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival or Lollapalooza. Both have been pretty excellent the last 2 years.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**

Try this link to Jambase. They have a festival guide that breaks down festivals in regions. They will keep updating as the year progresses, so keep checking back periodically.

Don't forget the Vice curated fest and the Taste of Chicago fests which both sported pretty snazzy lineups.
Nelson Ledges Quarry Park is in Ohio and they do several events from the Spring to the Fall. I think they have two seperate fests headlined by Ekoostik Hookah, a 4th of July weekend w/ 4 DSO shows, and a few others. I think they're all pretty cheap too.
ya im in michigan too. not much here. but nelson ledges is awesome. the best spot for a fest ive ever been to. trees everywhere so its shady annd you can sleep till noon. plus swimming in a beautiful, super clear quarry. it has cliffs you can jump off of. plus campfires. its the same atmosphere as roo just smaller. i cant say enough good things about that place. gratefulfest is their biggest and best fest. if you like the dead i wouldnt miss it.
legend valley is also a great place. great fests. especially hookahville on memorial day and labor day weekend. spring is always bigger with a better lineup. its in ohio too. www.legendvalley.net/
also summer camp is in illionois. but its also memorial day weekend. i havent been but i heard its nice. i dont wanna miss it but ill be at hookahville. www.summercampfestival.com/index.html
and all good is an incredible fest. its in w. virginina. i think it took us 5 hours from lansing. its in the mountains and its beautiful. there are a ton of big ass hills to climb. but its worth it. www.allgoodfestival.com/

and there is camp buzz in ohio. ive never benn but i hear its nice. the website sucks. and dosent have much up. but the history part has some past fests and lineups. www.campbuzz.com/index.html
and uncle bucks, also in ohio. its website also sucks. they have some small fests. mostly wekkend with ekoostik hookah fest but hey, i can never get enough hookah. www.unclebucksstable.com/Welcome.html
dude, how is the atmosphere in the camps at allgood? I've heard it is a little shady (more thefts and such) than at roo...
i also heard alot about that. we didnt have any problems. and i dont know anyone who did. there were alot of sagged shorts and sideways yankees caps roaming shakedown. but again i had no problems even if they did seem out of place. its the craziest shakedown i have ever been to. it raged all night long. tanks out in the open. security was non existent. they were busy selling their 'party favors". so i could see how the lack of a security team in the campgrounds could have made it easier for that type of thing to happen. they really only secure the "centeroo" stage area. but again i had no problems. but the vibe was great. awesome people and great music just like other fests.

another huge plus for nelson ledges and legend valley is that your theres no checkpoint at the stage. only a real light search when you first come in. once your in the camping area no more checks. you can bring your coolers to the stage. having a cooler full of beer with you is a nice plus as opposed trying to find your spot at roo carrying a bunch of 4 dollar beers.

I've been thinking about going this year but all I've heard are 2nd or 3rd hand accounts. Thanks.
I completely agree about the camping area at All Good. I had no problems at all. Had really awesome neighbors so we all sorta looked after each others stuff. A lot of shady looking folks on shakedown but that is present at every festival. I'm sure it's different for every person but I didn't get searched even once the whole time I was there. Walking into the concert area the security would just look at us and say "your good, go on in".
I just found out about this, The Dunegrass Festival. They already have Dark Star Orchestra confirmed, it doesn't say so on their site but it says on Jambase...and I emailed the folks at Dunegrass and they said DSO is playing. Could be a cool little festie.

i have freinds that have went. they said it was a really chill family type festival. its in a state park if i rmemeber right. and they said it wasnt your normal scene as far as open partying went. more like camping at a state park then a fest. but they all had a great time. david grisman, great american taxi, cornmeal and dso are enought to get me there. im pretty sure ill end up going. no other fests that weekend. and its only a couple of hours from me. i dont remember the lineup being this good in years past. ill go anywere for a dso show if i can swing it.

www.madmanmike.com/music_festivals-events_mi.html I have been to some cool michigan festivals. However it seems hard to find good ones where you can camp. I have started a business with throwing a festival in mind. Also hoping to book bands for a new concert venue in Pontiac. It is not going as fast as I would like. I'm running another business and there isn't much time. But it will happen.
