i think its more of a concern for bonnaroo losing its traditional fanbase and maybe even some ticket sales. why pay roo prices if your a "jam fan" (hate that term) when nearly every traditional jam/roo type band is at waka with a better timeslot. tlg, nma, wsp, franti, harper, and galactic are all there. and then on top of that you got claypool, alo, aod, toubab krewe, u-melt, grace potter, wood bros, mmw, ozomatli, yonder mountain, martin sexton, honkeytonk homeslice, ozric tentacles, etc... all bands id expect to make up the better part of a roo lineup. but roo does have ween, string cheese, john butler trio, sam roberts, hot tuna, sts9, and rat dog. cant complain about that.
if it wasnt for the cops havin their fun last year i think this would seriously hurt roo. if not in ticket sales then in the fact that alot of normal rooers might head to waka instead and skip roo all together.

Also, I can't help but believe that Bonnaroo is just tring to generally seperate it's self from all of the other "jam" festivals. Do we really need to see SCI, Phil, Trey, Bob or WSP headline (fests) twice (+) a year? There are plenty of "jam-band" festivals and that is absolutely wonderful but, if someone doesn't "break-off" and do something different, we're just going to be facing the same line-up at every (credible) festival.

i do agree that there are only so many jambands and we cant have them at roo every year. its just they are taking away our headliners!! but aslong as we get sunday, the superjam, and latenights ill live. i know i will be at both. imo wakas got a better lineup, but i will probably have a better time at roo. mainly because of the large group we have going to roo. cant wait to hang with people i never get to see anymore. i think alot of us were refusing to accept that roo is no longer a jam/grass roots music festival. ive finally accepted it an am trying to deal with it. makes me even sadder that i missed the first 2.

You really think that Waka has the better lineup? Do you mean better in terms of jambands or just overall? I think that Bonnaroo's is at least a little more solid, with all the diversity....wakarusa is mainly big jambands and then smaller indie acts. I only live 3 hours away from the festival, I'd go to both, but I can't take that many days off of work, so it's always Bonnaroo for me!
i really do think its much better then roo. just depends on the type of music your into. im all for diversity. but there was plenty of diversity to be found from jam/bluegrass/jazz/grass roots music. i try no tto let the more mainstream bands at roo effect it because i can just see soemthing else. but they have moved in on 2 of our headlinig spots. too much pop radio stuff and although i know lots of people like the mainstream and the indie adds, but its just not for me. and i prefer to have my electronic music more in the vein of ozric tenetacles or particle as opposed to dudes with laptops and what nots at roo. although sasha was a nice way to wind dow the evening last year. to each thier own. ill be at waka and roo. and ill have a great time at both., but i think waka and 10klf have better lineups then roo so far. and i think all good and gathering of the vibes will give roo a run for thier money when they release more of their lineups.
The term "jamband" is part of the problem. I use it too because it's easier than saying anything else but saying a festival is mostly "jambands" isn't really accurate in a way. You can have all jambands and still be very diverse. Take Umphrey's, Yonder Mountain String Band, and Medeski Martin and Wood. Someone might look at that and say they are all jambands. They are to a certain extent but really you have a prog rock/metal/jazz fusion band in Umphreys, a bluegrass band in Yonder Mountain, and a free form jazz band in Medeski Martin and Wood. All put on three incredibly different shows. So saying something is all jambands doesn't really mean it's not diverse.

Word....my bad. I guess what I'm trying to get at is the fact that Wakarusa's lineup consists of more bands that have a tendency to 'jam' out their music a little longer than other bands, whereas Bonnaroo's is more diverse with other types...if that makes any sense at all.
Yeah I hear ya man. I agree with you and when I refer to a jamband thats what I mean too. It's just that now a days the term somehow became a genre of music that everyband that does any improv gets thrown into. Like I said above we have bands that play completely different styles of music being lumped together when the only thing they have in common is improv, rotating setlists, and constant touring.
Kirk Rundstrom, singer and guitarist for the band Split Lip Rayfield, has passed away at his home in Wichita Kansas earlier today. He was 38. Kirk was a wonderful individual and musician and he will be sorely missed by everyone in the Wakarusa and Pipeline family.

gaddamnit!!!!!!!! i wanna go so bad. best lineup of the year for sure!!!! it just keeps getting better and better. but im sticking to not giving my money to anything in kansas and i dont want to give money to these promoters because they didnt change venues after last year. but damn that is a crazy ass good lineup. it makes me so sad that this event was trashed by the drug nazis robbing and arresting(kidnapping) peaceful people to fund thier job.
