What is he running from? Whats in the air that he just jumped and tried to grab? Why does he run to the glass door, pounce on it and run away after making some wierd noise. I have a theory, and it could work for dogs too, but cats are weirder.
Why do they do these odd things? Oh, and i forgot to include that they bat at something with thier paw that you cant see sometimes. The conclusion i have come up with is that cats dream. Yes, i have seen my cat twitching and what not while he is alseep, and its pretty obvious that he is dreaming. We know our dreams can get odd, so i only imagine what he i seeing.
I figured out the difference is that when we dream, we know the difference between being in a dream, and being awake in reality after we wake up. My question is, do cats know the difference between what they see while dreaming, vs the awake reality? Could what cats see while dreaming affect thier reaction to stuff they dreamed about when they were awake??
Example: The Glass Door. He often runs up to it, jumps into it and sometimes gets mad at his reflection. He could have drempt that he jumped through the door and went outside (something he really wants to do), or he could have drempt he ran up the door and across the ceiling. I figure that he has drempt about his reflection in the glass door and has gotten into some sort of physical altercation with it. So all of this could have happened in his dreams, which he cannot tell the difference between dreams reality, which in turn makes him question everything and be cautious, and seem crazy.

LOL.....My cats do the same thing.....I guess they could be dreaming.....I think they are just trying to entertain themselves....cause I mean you try doing the same thing day after day after day after day with very little variation.....

I learned from my leisure studies class (101 so i consider myself somewhat of a leisure expert) that the more intelligent the animal the greater amount of leisure time required. Now since a cat has no thumbs and cannot build things to overthrow governments they probably just run around like maniacs and occasionally lick their bottoms.

Good theory--- but it doesn't explain why my cat just ate a packet of catnip SEEDS! SEEDS, I tell you! It wasn't even real catnip, it was little tiny SEEDS!! Freaking crazy, mangy beast.
Now she's running around chasing invisible gnomes.

Catnip seeds are just like concentrated essence of catnip. haha...We used to plant catnip for my cat and we would have to hide it for the first week or so because he would just demolish the dirt....Actually we never had one plant survive too long.....he is a master at being sneaky
Maybe in her dream she tried them and were delicious, so she thought they would still be delicious when she was awake cause she cant tell the difference.

i like the dream theory. it would explain a lot. maybe my cat had a dream about racing one of the dogs around, and that's why she runs 50 circuits around the house before finding something else to do.
But they're awake and active. Sounds maybe more like hallucinating than dreaming to me.
My cat doesn't seem to do a lot of chasing unseen things and the like. My main problem with him is that he can get too clingy and possessive. You know how they like to get between you and whatever you're trying to focus on. But he'll usually do this when I and my girlfriend are about to get near one another. For example, she'll be coming to sit by me on the couch. He'll stand on the couch where's she's going to sit and give her a mean meow, with the same attitude you'd see in a mad barking dog. The hilarious thing about it is that he's actually her cat.
Oh, the puking doesn't help either. He gorges real fast when the bowl gets filled and then throws it up 5-10 minutes later. Switching his food to the "sensitive systems" formula largely eliminates this problem, but they were out last time I went shopping. Anyway, Phil's got this bulimic tendency which I find weird too.

^^ haha my cat does the same thing.....I have learned to work around him.....He's at my folks place now while I am here
And as for the possessive thing maybe it's a male cat thing because one of my best friends is a guy and it seems that if I am visiting my folks my friend is over there alot and my cat does the same thing to me that your gf's cat does to her.....not necessarily meow, but he gives me this look...after 11 years I know that look....that little jerk doesn't want me to steal his buddy away.........
OK. I'm still feeling out some of the finer nuances of this cat thing Phil's been her cat for over three years, but he's only been living with me since November.

this seems to make the most sense to me. when my cat acts like a maniac his pupils get super huge. but then when he calms down his eyes go back to normal. he also runs around and jumps off of things like he was on a skateboard.

now the boy cat - he is just the sweetest most adorable thing - big and fluffy and a little meow - but he will stare at you forever until you pay attention to him

Its basically grease and you give a little smear on the roof of their mouth like once a week or so. We had to do it with one of our long hair cats. Thick and looks like it tastes nasty.
^^^Oh - I have some hairball stuff that is like that - and I just smear it on her paws - she actually likes the stuff - then again - she will eat just about anything.
I don't know that anything will help - because she literally scrafs food down - then pukes it right back up - undigested. Hairballs I can deal with - I expect that from cats - but this is just gross and what is worse - if I don't get it up as soon as she does it - the boy cat (Fluffy) will eat it

We have a Siberian Cat, related to the Maine Coon and Norwegen Forest Cat. They are sometimes referred to as a dog cat for dog lovers. She is a big lovable girl - especially at about 2 or 3 am. She has very small paws, and a significant mass, so when she walkss across your sleeping body in the middle of the night, you pay attention - especially if you are on your back. She likes to groom me in the middle of the night - makes sure my beard is clean, then sometimes goes after my hair.
She moans and grunts while she sleeps - and not in a soft, cute manner, but like there is a problem.
She will also stand at the front door on her hind legs and bang on the storm door with her paws. when she gets in a mood, she will walk up to our german shepherd and take a bite at the dogs leg to start a fight. - 17 pound cat fighting with a 75 pound dog.
Then our other dog jumps in to break things up - these are the times we call him the United Nations.

Not sure about adult cats but animal behaviorists do believe that kittens do hallucinate. They think it's part of some inate way of "training" to become adults. They hunt, attack, flee from danger, etc all in response to something only they can see.
My two adult cats still get wild like that on occasion, but then I notice that all the Cheetos and Ho-Hos in the house are gone and the little buggers have been into my stash again...
