Hint: Two recent examples of that exact situation were referenced in that facebook post as examples of places South Carolina is "better than"
I'm not going to really defend that post. I wouldn't"share" it myself. There have been much better examples for people to share that show that people are coming together black and white, praying together, hurting and healing together. I think people are just proud of the way that's happening.
There's a way to express the pride you feel in the way your community is responding to tragedy without invalidating the way another community responded to theirs.
No one knows so I can't talk about it and i have to tell SOMEONE! This morning we pack up and leave for PA. About an hour in I call my mom to remind her to bring a few things for the family reunion. She says my dad was sleeping and ny brother should be home from work soon and they would be hitting the road. About 10 min later she calls me hysterical that my dad was cold and she couldn't wake him. We turn around to Iowa bc my dad has passed away. I can't even wrap my head around it. He wasn't a healthy man by any means but it is still killing me. Please send all your peaceful vibes bc i need them!
Oh my goodness, luva. My heart hurts for you and your family. I am so sorry. Please let us know if there is anything at all we can do. Love and good thoughts are being sent your way.

Oh Luva, I'm so so sorry to hear this. It's absolutely heart breaking
After the marathon bombing, I dropped nearly 100 people on Facebook.
It's nice to have a cleanse once in a while. There's a lot of backward and ignorant people out there, some you don't need to really be that friendly with. Civil, but not friendly.
I've seen a lot worse. I don't find much wrong with this post. We were just talking about this today, how there weren't riots or even really any negativity here like there has been other places. While everyone knows that racism is still a problem, for the most part everyone knows that cases like this are just a case of one insane/extreme person. This guy did this to start a race war but that is not going to happen down here. There is a group of contractors where I work that are from Charleston, most of them are black and the day after it happened, we just had normal conversations. It's not really tense, there's no anger and hatred. We're all hurt by what happened. We mourn and try to heal together, so I don't see what's wrong with that? It could be a lot worse.
The post compares Ferguson/Baltimore with Charleston as if they were the same thing, when they are radically different situations. Black people were murdered in all three, but the circumstances surrounding them were very different. In Charleston, your shooter was white but some dipshit 21 year old acting alone. In Ferguson and Baltimore, black men died at the hands of government agents (i.e.: law enforcement officials) in areas which have been historically hostile and oppressive to the majority black populations. In Ferguson and Baltimore, there was something you could protest against and lash out against - you knew your enemy. In Charleston, your killer is in a cell somewhere in solitary confinement. There is justice in Charleston, whereas you won't see any in Ferguson and probably won't in Baltimore.
EDIT: It also singles out Obama and Al Sharpton as race baiters and divisionists, which is a trademark calling card of Fox News and right wing radio. The behavior is divisionist, attacking any black leaders (typically "liberal" (or at least not conservative)) for giving a shit about a situation about racial injustice. Conservative institutional power, which Fox News and right wing radio are the mouthpieces of, stands to lose the most if the system of racial oppression collapses.

I'm sorry for your loss. That's terrible news. Sending peaceful your way and I will bee keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
I seriously appreciate everyones thoughts and kind words. I am so thankful to have you when I need to get something out and can't anyother way. Again, thank you
One of my sisters just called me and told me that yesterday my father had a heart attack. For some reason my mother didn't tell anyone until today, even though he's been in the hospital over 24 hours now. They said he's going to be okay and should be discharged by Thursday, thank goodness. He's an old yankee who collects scrap metal in his spare time (he was carrying a piece of metal up from a basement when it happened) even though he has a pacemaker, and smokes a pack a day. I don't think we'll ever get him to stop working himself so hard.

So glad he's going to be OK. I always hate finding things out late. When my brother was in an accident last month, my dad & stepmom failed to tell us until the next day.
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

To be totally unfair to sang_xcx - the lady and I were talking about our experience and shit in general, and this came up: Let's remember that we are only having a serious debate about the confederate flag and clear racism now in 2015, after 9 people were murdered in cold blood. Yet can anyone argue that they have seen plenty of confederate flags at past and this Bonnaroo? More importantly would the reaction to a Black Panther or other Black Power flags be the same? Would those folks just be left alone like the Confederacy Flag wearers usually are?

I've never seen a confederate flag at Bonnaroo. I have seen them at Spirit of Suwanee and just knew that those were people I wanted to avoid. I'd think a black power flag flown at a campsite would bring a similar reaction from festival goers. Some would be oblivious to it and some might be offended. Perhaps it would draw extra attention from security when entering the fest. Hopefully we are to the point where Confederate flag fliers might begin to be profiled by authorities, except their will still be those unfortunate ones who share the same views.

Not sure what that has to do with me. If I saw either flag at roo I'd pay no attention. I would just know where the rednecks are camping with the confederate flag. Black Panther flag would be something new.

Never? Really? Maybe it's also because I make it an effort every year to walk around and just take in all the campsites at the festival (sometimes like 2hrs of walking around). But I have seen at least one a year flying, this year it was specifically in between the coffee barn and walking up to bushy branch.
And I don't care about authority figures profiling anyone, it's against my personal viewpoints on freedom of speech. But I would put up a black fist if I didn't think I would get robbed and assaulted by those who disagree with me politically. The Black Power movement is not something to be feared- it is a clear anti-colonialist and anti-status quo message that was shut down for fear of strength. (thus why I was saying I was being unfair to sang, they aren't equivalent - but a LOT of people think they are)

Just bringing up a relevant topic. It's important for you and others to push against it, more than I do. I think that is a huge missing piece of the puzzle of us progressing as a country. Unfortunately no matter how good I am, and how much of an influence I as a person of color present - policy and social thought doesn't change readily upon my speech. It's going to take people understanding that they may feel nothing towards, but when I see that flag I know it stands for lynching and segregation. And that doesn't just go away. And I think a lot of people just want to wish away that feeling. As if I, or others impacted by it have any choice in their emotion and pain.
Also I know how much most of y'all hate talking politics and race. But there is only, what, 5-10 prominent (current or former) board members of color -- I will refrain in the future. My voice right now can't center on music and I will get out of everyone's hair soon. The cuts are just fresh as fuck

I really think that would go over better with the majority of Roo attendees than a confederate flag. I've seen white people wear shirts with Redd Foxx's face and the words "Kill Whitey."
One thing this reminded me of was this guy fresh out of high school I encountered last year who complained to me how his truck was always being vandalized and the police we're always pulling him over for no reason. When he wasn't telling me that, he liked to talk about the confederate flags on his truck. I just walked away to leave him to make the connection on his own. So, maybe that guy just drove like a jerk, but perhaps there are a few cops seeing things like that and taking notice.

You should, and I hope do, feel free to discuss whatever you want here.
I understand what you are saying. You can only do so much. We have to do the rest.

I think for me growing up with that flag around, I just tend to trivialize it. I know the kind of people that fly it and wear the shirts. I know that most of them have no idea what it really means. Also for a lot of them I think it's not so much about segregation or even anything to do with racism. Most of them really have no idea what it really means. Either they use it as a form of some stupid southern pride or like a symbol of being a rebel. Mostly I just think it's stupid. I know you can't block out the things that you associate with it, but I think you should give the flag less weight. You're right though, I tend to stay out of most political, religious or race issues. There are a lot of things that I think are wrong that I don't necessarily speak out against. I'm not really one to be an advocate. I'm more likely to just never talk to someone again or defriend them on Facebook, like I did a few weeks ago over a post a guy made on facebook.

If we really want to take on a heady topic: how about people finally shaming idiots with headdresses on. Because I'm sure they and they're family have earned those feathers of war, honor, or community.

Why apologize? Why stop talking about it?
I sometimes worry that I talk too much about politics and activism and whatnot. But you know what, if people don't like you for having certain opinions and for being involved in causes - that's their problem, not yours. Keep fighting the good fight, cause it most certainly needs to be done. Does every single post need to be about politics, race, or activism? No. But that's just an important aspect to your life, and it would be weird if you *didn't* talk about it at all.
Speaking for myself, I want you to stick around on Inforoo. I think you provide a very important voice here, and I believe there's more people here who are receptive and supportive of your message than you realize.
