So, my electric company showed up today. Turns out I owed them 11 dollars from my past bill. So what do they do? SHUT OFF MY ELECTRICITY
No notice (although they claim they've sent me 3), no call, no nothing. So, to get it turned back on WITHIN THE NEXT 72 HOURS, I had to pay them the 11 dollars PLUS a 90 dollar "deposit" PLUS a 75 dollar "reconnection fee," and I still currently have no electricity. Now I'm stuck at home while I have tons of work to do JUST IN CASE the dude comes by to turn it back on, even though I'm sure they wont show up to my house till at least tomorrow.
Y'all, I want to CHOKE THE LIVING HELL out of some people...I just don't know who deserves it most.
Today is SUPPOSED to be payday. My assistant got paid; my colleagues got paid. But me? Nope. This is the SECOND TIME it's happened since summer. And to make matters worse? I just called HR in a panic and tried not to burst into tears while talking to a clueless temp who informs me that the entire HR/Payroll division is at a conference UNTIL THURSDAY, so this will "have to wait" until then. My response? "Don't they have cell phones you can call, because this is an EMERGENCY!!!"
Problem #1: Neither my boss (who has plenty of experience) nor the Dean's sweet but otherwise incompetent secretary (who started in July) noticed the error, either this summer or now. My boss should've retired years ago, since she's now teaching the kids whose parents she taught in the '70s. (Problem #1B: boss has no plans to retire any time soon, so I'm basically quacked six ways from Sunday.)
Problem #2: I'm now overdrawn and had planned to pay bills today. And buy groceries.
::: takes deep, cleansing breaths :::
Fortunately I have an ally in the Faculty Senate president who's raising hell on my behalf as I type this. An irate email has been sent to all of HR, so hopefully by day's end they'll have cut an emergency check. Just like in July. That debacle gave me an ulcer; this 2nd incident is giving me a migraine. GRRR.
I have been going through the preparations of graduating with a B.A in Philosophy this December. I'm in my 6th year of undergrad due to being medically withdrawn (kidneys and varicose veins) from 3 separate semesters and losing some credits through transference. I have had a graduation check from my departmental advisor and with my specific college from within the university. BOTH CHECKS claimed that at the culmination of this semester that I would have completed 125 hours and all requirements to fulfill my major. Today, mind you it is halfway through what I had perceived as my final semester here, I receive an email from the overall university graduation checker and she informs me that I have one ONE! credit that is needed for my graduation and that I'll need to take one more class in the Spring when I had planned on working (to start paying some of these loans) and prepping for the GACE (Georgia Academic Certification Exam). Both of which I can still do really, but if ANY of my advisors had caught this previous to now, then I would have taken the course thru session this past summer. Not sure if this small book is GRRRR worthy, but I'm quacking disappointed/pissed!

Do you really have to take it? I had to apply for graduation three times at UTK because the person checking it didn't understand her job. I ended up having to go down to that department and speak with her supervisor.
End of day summary: no check. The entire payroll dept was at a conference in the Smokey Mtns (really? AYFKM?) so they were unable to cut an emergency check and NOT ONE PERSON on the entire campus could help until tomorrow. My poor assistant loaned me cash to cover my overdraft fees, bless her kind little heart. I left early and am now home & ready to drown my Irish luck in a bottle (or two) of Argentinian Malbec.
People handle stress differently: some chain smoke, some bite their nails or eat. Me? I've started cutting my hair. I probably lopped off about 2" today alone. If the stress isn't alleviated soon, this is how I'll look by Thursday:
PS: mc, dude...I hope things get better for you ASAP!

That's the UT system for ya: incompetency in EVERY DAMN DEPARTMENT. You have no idea how many students have cried to me because they were supposed to graduate but got screwed over by the Records Office. For a university that's been around since 1794, you'd think we'd have our act together by now, but noooooooo...
jmhayes: ask your advisor if you can get a waiver for that last course. In most cases, your major's department head can petition on your behalf to get it waived. And if all else fails, maybe your school will let you walk in December (which would allow you to get a job & start working) then take the class in the spring semester? That's assuming your work schedule would let you do so. Either way, good luck to you! That's a spectacularly craptastic situation.

You should ask the HR department to cover your overdrafts. I would. A while back, when I was working for a small and not so stable company, one of my paychecks bounced. I didn't realize it until I was trying to pay for lunch (which I had already eaten), and my card got declined. I have $180 in overdraft fees before the problem got fixed (when I was making 10 bucks an hour), but my employer covered all the overdraft fees for me.
As for a GRRRR of my own. I had to spend all my savings + about $300 that I borrowed from my parents to get my truck fixed today. After paying the speeding ticket, I will have to stretch things awfully thin to get to nashville next friday.
^ They won't; I asked when they screwed up the last time. (This is a gov't institution after all; they don't admit mistakes, much less make amends for said actions.) It's a love/hate relationship: I love everything about my job except the boss and the lousy pay. It's time to get out of education...

Quack 2012. This has been, hands down, THE WORST year if my entire life, especially the last 3-4 months. I've experienced some of my biggest challenges... all in a short amount of time. I've seen the people I love most in this world go through terrible physical and emotional pain. If I wasn't a resilient person I think I might already've crawled into a hole (or deep depression). Can I get just one positive thing to happen? Can one thing go my way? I'm not asking for much... hell I'll just take not being shiz on by the world as a positive at this point.
Thank goodness I have friends like you guys. I don't think I could make it without the special "family" I have here.
On a side note: please send Mike D some positive vibes right now. He might get mad at me for putting a spotlight on him, but he needs to know how loved he is by our Infofamily. He is one amazingly special dude.
Holls, Iamthewhore and Dave, thanks for the advice. I was seeing red yesterday, but will be investigating further tomorrow after I finish up my tests for the week. Thank you Inforoo for keeping me sane :-)

Sarah, you and MikeD are loved around here. I don't know either of you that well, but you both seem like great people to me. So I hope things get better for you there.
And Holls, why wreck yourself like that? Sure its a shizzy and stressful situation, but the chain smoking and hair cutting ain't worth it. *hugs for you too*

Hey holls, have you called the department of labor? Because withholding a paycheck is illegal. I only know this because a former employer tried to withhold my last paycheck when he shut down my division...I called the Department of Labor and the very nice folks there had me my paycheck, a severance, and a year of unemployment sorted out in a week. If you work for a university, the LAST thing they want to deal with is the DOL. So, I would stop asking nicely!

11 dollars! 11!
ACK! Horrible!! In April, I switched roommates. The electric was under my old roommates name. She called and asked for her name to be removed from the bill on Saturday, April 30th. Friday rolls around, I get home from work.. and no power. "Because there is no name on the account, the account cannot exist." The worst part of the story??? THEY COULDN'T TURN IT BACK ON UNTIL MONDAY. I begged and pleaded with no avail. Everything in my fridge/ freezer spoiled. My old roommate couldn't vacuum or anything in preparation for the new one. And the poor new roommate had no power during her first night at her new place!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
Hospitals are a huge target for criminals. So many transients coming and going, and the visitors lot usually is far away since Doctors need good parking.
My boss sets this quota that we have to reach. all summer we have failed miserably and been in the 60% range. Finally We hit 97% which is amazing. My boss takes us into an office and says we arent selling enough. We hit 97% thats a vast improvement over the past few months! I understand being pushed but I feel like nothing is good enough for these people End Rant.
It seems so silly in light of those of you with real problems. So thanks, you guys, for being so sweet. On the agenda today is getting Moz tickets, and then discuss other fests. ...after I feel like sufficient mope is achieved.
