With all of this talk of roo changing, I went thru all the years' lineups to see the shift. While I agree that there are a marked amount less "jam bands" this year, I would say that it's more because they are evening out the different genres of music then going just towards indie rock. In 04 there were a lot of bands at roo that i would consider rock, but there were still a lot of jam as well. I seriously doubt that this trend will continue in not inviting a lot of artists who helped start this festival. I would call myself a indie fan, more so than a jam fan, but I don't know/like a lot of these artists still. As other people have pointed out, there are scheduling conflicts and such happening--probably more b/c roo switched back to the original weekend it was on. I don't know, just a theory, but I seriously doubt that roo is going to be continually cutting back on jam and go towards coachella every year.
To answer the original question, I am excited by this year's line-up. The combinationg of Mike Doughty, Matt Costa, Umphrey's McGee, Donavon Frankenreiter, Death Cab, G. Love, Nickel Creek (ok I need to stop listing now), and Lewis Black alone is a wet dream for me. I am beyond excited.
I am perhaps a little dissapointed by the lack of "jam bands," but only because (1) I never considered myself a jam band fan, but LOVED what I heard and learned and experienced in new music last year, and hoped to be exposed to more, and (2) I don't want the mellow fun fans that I met last year to dissapear! I welcome new fans, I just want the old want so stay too.
