Is this exciting for anyone in here? Sunday just is getting rougher and rougher for my taste.
They say the songs that stick with you the most are the ones that came out when you were in your preteens/early teens, so after a month of not knowing anyone on Sunday, I'm pumped for a throwback.
i didn't know the Dropkick Murphys existed outside of St Patricks Day anymore
I laughed way too hard at this because the one time I’ve seen them was a St. Patrick’s Day in Boston 💀
That said, this set could be really interesting. It’ll be fun regardless and lifts my spirits a bit on the Sunday lineup. Hopefully some more cool things to come!
I’ve cut down my music festival consumption to punk festivals and folk festivals, so Dropkick is an announcement I’ve been waiting on for years from Newport. (I’m also in support of a Gogol Bordello return.)
They’re a perfect fit given their Boston connections. They put out a Woodie Guthrie cover album (with features from folk alum). And they’ve been getting super political on social media as of late - which I find surprising for a band that appeals to your average drunk white guy.

Fun fact: the only fight I’ve ever been in is with a drunken white guy, over politics, so this checks out.
I asked if I like Bernie Sanders, I said yes, and he started throwing glasses. Good times
Anyway, it looks like This Machine Still Kills Fascists/Okemah Rising used mostly unreleased lyrics from the archives, so it's not just a straight cover album. Pretty cool!

Sooo would they do like a “Woody’s 112th” birthday celebration for Sunday?
Gillian Welch Dave Rawlings Billy Bragg Billy Strings Dropkick Murphy Sierra Ferrell Mighty poplar
If Jay could land somebody like say Bruce Springsteen or Eddie Vedder with the caveat of it being a Woody Guthrie tribute set then I think he would do it whatever year he could.
With that said, although I always appreciate it when Jay lands his white whales, I really hope he's not deliberately booking weaker lineups in order to give us 3 songs from them to close sets. That formula is getting a little annoying and isn't really in the spirit of the festival.

Woody Guthrie tribute set with Dropkick Murphys/. 25th anniversary of Mermaid Avenue with Billy Bragg, Natalie Merchant and you know who. Rhiannon Giddens also has a Guthrie cover (as does Shovels and Rope). Joan Baez pops in cause why not. And Bruce shows up and announces new album the Guthrie Sessions” to make it historic. Jay rides off into the Newport sunset with one more slam dunk in the books.

If that’s what slam dunks are, going forward. Then this fest will continue to have subpar boring undercard just so they can have Anthony Mason hype up one set…
All while Jay and crew rake in 1 milly in profits under the ‘guise that they can’t pay their artists proper.

Thinking that Bruce, Wilco , Billy Bragg and guests doing Mermaid Ave is not a slam dunk is fucking wild. Some of ya’lls bar is way too high.
Personal vendettas against Jays salary aside, this is a killer booking if that what it ends up being
