One of the most influential and underrated hip-hop acts of all time is playing Bonnaroo this year!
My journey with Three 6 Mafia was very weird. Of course, I knew them being in high school in the mid 00s. Tons of hits. But I just kinda viewed them as chalk, fun, radio rap for many years following their run. No different from Luda, TI, Lil Jon, etc...
Then in the mid-to-late 2010s my best friend was like, "hey did you know 36 are actually good?" And I was kinda like, "yeah I guess the more I think about it Stay Fly and Poppin My Collar have probably aged better than most of those other songs from highschool." And then he went through some version of what I'm about to explain.
Three 6 Mafia are even more interesting than their large amount of 2000s hits. They won't play the songs that make them even more interesting, but that's ok because those pop / crunk hits are also (mostly) sick. But knowing the full extent of why some people like me think of them in a very high regard might make you anticipate the show a little more.
The primary three members were DJ Paul, Lord Infamous and Juicy J. There are quite a few others that have either been official members or are kinda ancillary members / a part of the crew. Unfortunately, a lot of them have died or gone to prison, including Lord Infamous, Gangsta Boo, Koopsta, and crunchy black (prison). So at Bonnaroo, DJ Paul and Juicy J are the two main guys. As important as some of the other members were, as long as these two are involved, we are getting a completely authentic Three 6 Mafia show. Juicy J has always been the most famous and swagged out rapper of the group (though Lord Infamous was better). DJ Paul is one of the most influential producers of all time.
Their first wave of influence wasfrom the sound they had from '91-'95. I never feel comfortable defining genres, but it's like lo-fi, horrorcore but with bangin beats and like a drip of houston / psych in it. IMO you can hear the influence in a ton of soundcloud rap, spaceghostpurp, suicide boys, lil ugly mane, ASAP Rocky, Denzel Curry, etc in the 2010s. I saw an interesting reddit post one time that described it through the lens of Dr. Dre. Dre made The Chronic and G Funk became the shit. Then Dre brought the genre to its full apex sound-wise years later with the album "2001". By dominating so hard with that album it almost hurts its influence. G Funk attempts in the 2000s and 2010s would still sound shittier and less up to date than Next Episode and Still Dre. What's the point? So Three 6 Mafia had it's Chronic... The game changing table setter. Unfortunately, its not all on one album, but I think the best place to go is the compilation "Underground Vol 1: '91-'94." When I listen to those beats and think about some of the production that was going on in '91-'94... I think it's crazy how more relevant their sound was. Here are some examples of songs I love (not all from that album):
The theory the Reddit guy had was that the reason so many rappers were pulling from 36 and not g funk in the 2010s is that Three 6 Mafia never put out their version of 2001. The modernized apex album of that sound / style was still out there, so there was an opening for someone to do it for them 20 years later.
A couple of other notes that I personally find less interesting but could be even more important technically:
1. They really did drop an awesome album called Mystic Styles in '96. It's the culmination of their Horror era. It's scary. Production is good. It's very worthwhile and many would point to it as their crowning achievement. I personally disagree and would prefer to listen to Underground Vol 1. MS is actually like too sound... too technically good imo. It's just less fun than TU1. There's bad songs on Underground and I just smile when they come on before skipping. They are so authentically goofy and fun its hard to hate even the bad moments because none of it is boring. MS you kinda have to strap in for a "very good" 36 mafia album. Not something I'm always up for. Both great projects either way.
2. Their vocal delivery is possibly more influential than their sound. The Migos flow that everyone does came from 36 and Bone Thugs. Thats a pretty big thing but I actually don't always love that flow. It's called the Triplet flow. Others did it before 36. I think their beef with Bone Thugs in the 90s was partially about "who developed this shit." But before both of them others had done it. Nothing in this life is truly originally. But... its 3 6 Mafia's flow I'm sorry.
Back to the thing... The reason they don't have their version of "2001" is because instead of bringing that sound to its limit they pivoted hard and went in a more crunk and mainstream direction. You could even assign their song "Tear the Club Up" with a pretty good amount of influence on its own. At the least, they were right there starting that crunk Lil Jon wave and not merely glomming onto it.
From around 2000 through 2008 they just cranked out a shitload of very fun hits. You can just look at their setlists on setlist FM. If you were conscious in the 2000s you likely know a minimum of 10 of those songs. The sprinkle in 1-3 90s tracks.
For anyone starting from absolute ground zero, these are the kinds of songs you can expect to see at the show:
Odds and ends: Stay Fly is a candidate for top 10 rap hit of the 2000s. They wrote the song "Hard Out Here for a Pimp" that won an Oscar for the movie Hustle and Flow. DJ Paul produced the beat to Intl Players Anthem, maybe a top 5 hiphop song of all time. They'll actually play a remix of it at Roo. Personally think they should let the beat run and let fans rap along to the first two verses. Juicy J does Bandz Will Make Her Dance.
I kinda love that they don't even push all this "influence" stuff on people. In fact, it feels like they've always just let it rip, been themselves, and I would expect that if they saw this post they would cringe massively and say it's all stupid as fuck they just made music. They have an attitude of "we just need to keep up with these youngsters and throw a party." So that's what their set will be. Just straightforward simple fun. They are not technically proficient performers. I think I heard too many of their vocals came through the speakers for my liking at iii Points. But they had very good energy. The setlist is loaded. It's a care-free atmosphere and they had some fairly scary / trippy visuals to boot. I think this will be a very rowdy Roo late night This Tent set.
We'll watch Kendrick give a technically spectacular performance, and then we'll walk over to This, lower our brow, mob around, mosh at quite a few points and just all-around fuck shit up.
This thread could just be me posting every now and then about random songs that I like from them. But based on the top 10 acts thread, it seems like some of you are excited too so I'd love to hear what songs you all like most, thoughts if you've seen them live, tell me that the reddit theory I described is bullshit, that they actually aren't influential maybe Stay Fly IS Still Dre... whatever you want!

Is Three 6 underrated? They’re a huge deal where I’m from, but I lived close to Memphis for a while so it might have just been regional/my dad was a massive rap fan so I grew up with a lot of it.
Probably number 1 most excited in my heart. Real question is, are Three 6 Mafia the first Oscar winners to perform on the farm ? I’d guess yes but again have done 0 research. Incredible post and can’t wait for their set.
Huge 3 six fan right here. Awesome post with good info I didn't know. I saw them last year for the first time at SummerCamp and loved every second of it. Def in my top 10 most excited for acts at Roo this year.

it’s unlikely that you could rate them as a group or DJ Paul as a producer high enough to where I still wouldn’t say they are underrated.

Lord infamous(dj Paul's brother) was probably the best rapper in the group, and he was really pushing the horror core aspect. He went to prison and missed they're transition to the crunk era.

Mystic Stylez is my favorite Rap record of all time. Their level of influence at this point cant be overstated. It will be a treat to see their show at the farm.

DJ Paul and juicy j put out an album with Fiend outta NOLA as Da Headbussaz. Bought it on a CD-r on beale street when I was high school. This song has one of my most quoted lines ever "I'm in the red lobster and I'm eating all the shrimp!"

At 2:47 this skate part changes over to the song Triple Six Clubhouse which contains a pretty sick beat switch that samples Bittersweet Symphony. It's not the greatest part but it's probably a top 5 overall skate video significance wise and this was how I found that song.
