A reasonable compromise could be to move 94 to the beltway around, and then have stubs using part of the existing freeways.
St Paul - It looks like maybe can put 94 on the current 694. Then switch 694 to what's currently 94 between 35E and 494.
Mpls - Then change the north-south part from 394 to 694 to be 894.
I've never been to Minnesota, so not sure what parts of the highway are actually used much more than others.
LD Think of this i94 removal effort as a simpler version of Boston’s Big Dig.
494 and 694 create a circular beltway around the entire twin cities metro. If you live inside the 494/694 loop you’d largely be considered to be urban living (MPLs and STP are both entirely within the loop). Outside the loop and it’s definitely suburbs. The airport lies within the loop and the Mall of America is across from the airport on the other side of 494.
There’s no need to “move” i94 between St Paul and MPLS. Both 494 and 694 are also part of the interstate system and are meant to be used as the alternates to using i94 thru the heart of the city.
We also have a light rail line that runs parallel to this stretch of i94. The light rail connects Minneapolis and St Paul and they are extending light rail and bus rapid transit (BRT) with lines running to both downtowns for a more connected metro.
In all the local comments and events I’ve attended, the people that are complaining about removal are people that live in the suburbs. They aren’t like hoffm83n who actually lives in the area and gets the brunt of the noise and pollution and headache of a major interstate cutting thru your neighborhood.
hoffm83nLD CityNerd just did a 20 minute episode on this highway removal effort:
Those are just words for now. Gonna have to see some actual actions because these fuckers love to move the goalpost.
Yeah. I think they are bombing Rafah already. A ground invasion would probably go poorly, but Netanyahu is a psycho who may do it anyway, so possible Biden is just acting the way he was always gonna here, trying to stop Netanyahu from getting a bunch of IDF killed and look like the good guy in the process.

They have withheld shipments of ammo already at least, so there is some action. But honestly it all mostly feels too little too late at this point, even if they withhold the rest of it.

I think between Congress, the public and the international community the pressure is very real here.
Going along with this is a massive PR error. Putting aside the human loss.
This doesn’t even mean it’s over. These shipments aren’t rushed. The logistics of this type of stuff are worked out well in advance. Israel almost certainly has what it needs for the operation. It might just put them at risk of running low on other fronts.
And this is just one operation they need to rework. Biden will support them. I don't think that's going to change at all. They just need to shift gears on the approach to Rafah and the war can keep going.
He's 100% correct and if he has to be a janitor later in life I'm sure he'll happily do so.
Well I hope he doesn’t lose his doctorate
He can probably get in somewhere else, even if its a down tier from what he's at now. If you're a doctoral student at U Chicago, you probably have enough merit and/or connections to land somewhere else.
Worse comes to worse, you go outside the country and backdoor your way in. There's a bunch of med students who wound up studying in Grenada, then came back to the US. One of my exes has a cousin who did that, after getting bounced from UMass.
If the goal is kill everyone quickly, I feel like they have the means internally to do so without the assistance of the US. Why do they need our weapons to do it faster? Are they trying to suggest they're getting significant resistance from Hamas? Are they suggesting that they aren't trying to kill everyone?
OR do they need some of the blood to be on our hands so that other countries that sympathize with Palestine are too afraid to fight back? Hmmmmm

They don’t have the production capacity. Basically. That’s especially true for more high tech missile systems to target underground networks…. Which is oversold given Hamas can often dig deeper than most can penetrate .
I have no clue what they have on hand but it’s probably plenty to destroy most of Rafah. Although probably not enough to actual get all the tunnels. But that would leave them low on supplies on other fronts which is strategically not something any military wants. Much less Israel who has several insurgent groups surrounding them and the looming long term threat of Iran.
That’s the whole argument against Biden some Liberals ignored for months. He had a lot of power to influence this.

Maybe they shouldn't be leveling entire populations of people if they don't have the means to deal with the repercussions. Our horrific history of doing this type of shit ourselves undoubtedly assured them that we would be cool with whatever they decided to do, no matter how barbaric.

That's why the oversimplified accusation of being a US client state still gets used. But it is true that they're emboldened by their relationship with us.
But just as importantly, the care of Gaza has long been subsidized by the rest of the world. It's a tricky subject to say when the occupation ended or how it's defined with modern tech and the blockade. Regardless, Israel saves a fuck ton of money by having other nations take care of the Palestinians' needs, which typically falls to the occupying power.
So for this war. Look at who's going to have to rebuild Gaza. Israel will argue they aren't the occupying power and don't owe them anything. It will likely be the US, UAE, the EU, etc. The people who built a lot of the shit that was just destroyed. That's if Israel isn't successful in the full ethnic cleansing they were clearly aiming for.
Just an endless cycle of bullshit. There should be a recognized Palestinian State and an international nation building effort. That would do more to kill Hamas' grip on the region than any bomb. You can't kill an idea. You can't bury the grievances of generations in the dust.
