Earl is good. He eschews a lot of traditional song structure and instead just dives into his multisyllabic rhyme schemes, sometimes from the very first bar. I'm just as impressed with the production, a lot of which Earl did himself.

I cannot believe I'm going to have to listen to a whole hour of the 1975 to see if the new album is good or not.
update: It was honestly pretty good right up until this part:
Shit threw me off. So weird.
But honestly, I enjoyed the album as a whole. Which is odd; I haven't enjoyed anything they've put out since their first EP, and honestly I've always attributed me enjoying that EP to a lapse in musical judgement.

I didn't anticipate it being so damn short with it being 15 tracks long. But it was enjoyable from beginning to end, so I guess I can't truly complain. You're spot on with the production - was phenomenal. And he delivered lyrically/vocally as always.

That album is so good. So far my AOTY is between Saba and Janelle.
I think.
I also wonder what your take on SOB x RBE is. They’ve released two albums this year but I liked the first one more.
Listening to them now, it's not really my style. Some of their beats sound more suited to the mid-2000s (kinda T-Painish), and they often try to fit too many syllables into their bars and it throws off their cadences. Thanks for the rec though.

Still need to listen to Rosalia and Smino. Earl's leading the pack right now, I enjoyed all of JID's album but it doesn't have the cohesiveness that Earl 's does.

Do you have any recs from this year that is similar in style to Saba's release? Hiphop/rap is not a genre I listen to much, and I couldn't get into many favorites (Pusha T, KSG, Travis, etc) although I tried to listen to them few times. Saba has been my favorite so far. And I enjoyed Tierra Whack's album as well.

TA13OO by Denzel Curry was pretty fantastic. Smino can be similar to Saba but I haven't listened to his new one yet. Amine's mixtape ONEPOINTFIVE wasn't bad; not as poppy as Good For You (which is where I think his strength is), but worth a listen. Noname is good too if you want something more laid back and poetic; she raps with Saba and Smino a lot too. I'd reccomend Denzel the most though.

Excited to check'em all, thanks!
Mick Jenkins, Isaiah Rashad and Rejjie Snow too.
I'd also plug Pink Siifu but I hesitate to call that rap. But the Ensley album is super cool and you should check it out.
This was a tough month - a lot of albums I liked, none I loved. It ended up being between Smino, Earl, and JID - I like Smino's sonics best, but it's long and gets samey after a while; I'm not a huge fan of lofi hip-hop so while Earl's is good, it's not something I'm likely to return to. JID has the greatest replay value for me.
