My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and good kid, m.A.A.d city were both leagues above TPAB.
Can we count FlyLo as rap? Because he tops TPAB too.
I want to second the notion that MBDTF is an overall better more cohesive and yet equally creative album than Butterfly. But while I personally like Good Kid better than Butterfly too, I get the argument that it isn't as creative/innovative.
Also, before the day is up, I want to come back and write down some thoughts for why Carrie and Lowell is so above and beyond deserving of the title this month.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.
Gonna vote for this one, i really really enjoy Sufjan as well, but i just think i'll be listening to this a lot more. Although i was hyping this up a lot when i was first listening, i went back and listened to MBDTF and GKMC and have to agree MBDTF is streets ahead, however i probably enjoy TPAB as much as GKMC.
Update: the new Modest Mouse has completely grown on me. It may not be a top 3 album this crowded month and might not be Lonesome Crowded West or Good News... but it's great stuff. I couldn't get into it at first so it may take a few attempts to feel it.
Honorable Mentions: 2. To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar 3. Fantasy Empire by Lightning Bolt 4. Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress by Godspeed You! Black Emperor 5. The Ark Work by Liturgy
It was really close between the top two but C&L really hit me emotionally. I think today is the first time I listened to the album without tearing up.

My intention was to imply it's the most creative in the post-MBDTF rap universe, as it was released ROUGHLY a half-decade ago. Moreover, you can argue that GKMC was better than TBAB all you want, but there's no way it's more creative. I never said it was better.
Have to go with my heart on this one and what I probably listened to the most. Great month overall. 2) Courtney Barnett 3) Lower Dens 4) Sufjan Stevens 5) Lightning Bolt
Tobias Jesso Jr. - Goon What a fucking outrageous month for music. Here's my rundown: 1. Tobias Jesso Jr. - Goon: This record is so easy to listen to. It's like the band Girls kept the vocal stylings and the poetic mindset, then molded themselves down to one person, then that person fucked Paul Simon, then gave that baby a guitar and a piano and told him to start writing. I'm honestly probably going to end up listening to Courtney Barnett more, but there is something about the melodies in this album that I can't seem to shake off days later. 2. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit: There's really something about the way this girl can play the guitar and tell her stories that always makes me smile. She has such an interesting way with words that can be on one hand silly/verging on meriting sarcastic laughter and on the other hand surprisingly provocative with their simplicity. Been into her since the A Sea of Split Peas, and I look forward to watching her continue Aussie-rocking. 3. Sufjan Stevens - Carrie & Lowell: I don't really know what to say. I'm grateful that Sufjan chose this as the mode with which to grieve and to share it with us. I will only seldom play this album. There's only so much I can handle. 4. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly: This album will go down in the history books, and I'm completely okay with that. Everyone keeps commenting on how it's a lot to digest and sit through, but mother fuck is it a satisfying album to listen to, especially in the context of Kendrick. It really is unlike so many things of that ilk, but he's shaping the game right now and rap is gonna have to fight that. This is how hip-hop should go. It should always be in the context of In the words of Mos Def "You know what's gonna happen with hip-hop? Whatever's happening with us. If we smoked out, hip-hop is gonna be smoked out, if we doin' alright, hip-hop is gonna be doin' alright." I appreciate Kendrick's employment of that mentality in the way he produces music. Can't wait to see what he comes out with in the next decade and how the game responds. 5. Action Bronson - Mr. Wonderful: I'm never gonna stop rep-ing Action Bronson. He's got that Ghostface style. He's got my favorite idiot, Big Body Bes. He's got culinary knowledge up the ass. This album is mishmashed though. I love to listen to most of the songs, but Only In America is just garbage and Easy Rider is weirdly placed at the end after a string of sort-of whatever tracks. I'll never stop listening to that fat fuck. 6. Earl Sweatshirt - I Don't Like Shit, I Don't Go Outside: Love Earl, love everything he's ever done; all the homophobic, aggressive shit included. Glad to see he's finally being honest with his music. If it stay this way forever, I don't know how long I'll be behind him, but I'm enjoying watching him grow up. Even if this album isn't really my favorite, it's nice to see him making some decisions for himself. 7. Modest Mouse - Strangers To Ourselves: Pistol, Coyotes, and Of Course We Know are pretty great songs. God Is An Indian And You're An Asshole is easily the funniest song I've heard in awhile. I don't know. This album was fine.

dying. nico you are killing me.
I am loving this album too and this pretty much nailed it. He has a strong John Lennon vibe going, too.
I am sick. If someone could kindly tally this one up for me, I'll love you for the next month
I've tallied the whole thing already anyway, for my own curiosities. I'll do a double check of it for you, post it, and tag you within the next hour, so no worries.
edit. 1,000th post, eh? I'm pretty cool with this post being the one.
Jazmo, bansheebeat, rebelbrad, comcgee89, Slack, smellycat, ps ppprrrrr, OppositeOfBatman, Suriel, and monster have all gone up a notch in Inforoo-friendship with me. And I'm knocking Jim, jakicker, Dale Cooper, Wilson, AllDay, crazykittensmile, LIguy, antoinek91, beebee, Boner, LD, custeph, charlesbronson, chicken4, Roo'adelphia, and stinkyfingers down a peg.
I knew pretty early on in the voting (and by way of conversations that have transpired in other threads the past few weeks over Butterfly) that TPAB would run away with it, but I'm happy C&L was a fairly close second, considering. It is probably my favorite Sufjan album to date - and that is saying a whole fucking lot for me. I still might write a much longer reflection on the album as I said I would, and post it...someday. Maybe when we start discussing AOTY contenders.

Surprised there was no votes for GSYBE. In a normal month it would had received a few nominations.
What's funny is that so many people had it as their second, third, and fourth favorite of the month. It deserves to have a vote. "Piss Crowns Are Trembled" is the best track released in March imo. That song is a monster
I gotta ramble something out real quick. I have been a Toro y Moi fan from a little after the get go, but I just don't see his albums ever being album of the month level in my mind. I'll always enjoy his style and I've enjoyed everything he's done and Chaz seems like a pretty solid dude, but there's something undeniably PG about his records in my mind. His consistency is honestly impressive and I can't really put my finger on exactly what it is, but his albums will always be good not great in my mind. There's something to be said about never putting out a bad record and always being in stride. I don't know. What For? is pretty well put together album and f*ck if it isn't nice to listen to. But. It's so PG.
