I'm thinking of ending December voting around Christmas instead of the customary first Tuesday of the next month (Jan 6th). Is there any reason I should keep voting open that long?
December tends to be like this just because the releases for this month tend to be weaker, and everyone is thinking about their year end lists.
Yeah, I know. I was mostly joking, but I do wonder if maybe we should move this tournament for AOY to it's own thread and let this thread serve it's intended purpose. There's still a month to do, if anyone is actually interested.
To me, his voice doesn't seem to work with most of it.
I find the album to be rather enjoyable. When most of these "past-their-prime" bands try and rejuvenate their careers their sound comes off completely generic and I don't feel that way about this album. It probably helps that it is just over a half hour. The vocals don't bother me that much.

So this is my current thought process: we have a 64 album tournament, but there are currently 65 albums with two or more votes. So here's the tiebreaker round. The lowest rated albums on this list get knocked out of the tournament.
These are all the two vote albums. You vote one of three ways: Yes, No, Abstain. Pretty simple? Yes if you think it should be in the tourney, no if you don't. Abstain if you've never heard the album, haven't heard enough to properly vote, or don't wish to cast judgment.
How about we just let anything that actually gets more than 1 vote for any month be eligible for the AotY tourney. I know I have looked back on previous months and said to myself "fuck my ass, I should have voted for so & so instead" after more time to reflect on them and/or seeing the acts do the stuff live.
Nope, then Nickelquack wouldn't be eligible. I vote nope.
Everyone has different taste in music, which makes it so great...
And I listen to some random music that not many people on this board would enjoy...
So that's my intro to say this: the new Smashing Pumpkins album was a complete waste of 90 minutes of my life. It's a 30 minute or so album and I listened to it three times (while exercising and doing house chores) and I never once had an enjoyable moment with it. I listened to it three times because sometimes music has to grow on you after repeated "listens". The entire time, I kept wanting to listen to old-school Smashing Pumpkins... or even some Magic Numbers. The lyrics are so bad. It's like a watered down version of what the band once was...
Maybe it's just me, though, since others seem to be enjoying it. On the flip side, I have never been a big Foo Fighters fan, but I finally got a chance to try their new album. Not bad! I love their new HBO series, too.
December is always a weaker month, but there are some interesting albums that have come out. Right now I'm leaning toward Mr. Mitch - Parallel Memories. It got voted the 2nd best album of the year by Fact. www.factmag.com/2014/12/09/the-50-best-albums-of-2014/50/
I am going to change my mind and have to agree with you all. I've listened to D'Angelo about fifteen times and it's one of the most moving albums I've heard this year. I am going to say NMinaj is #2 for December.

Have you heard anything else in the last 36 hours?
I, unfortunately, have... but when I was listening to it my mind kept returning to Black Messiah. I am off this week so I've had it playing in the background of basically everything I do. I do like Nicki Minaj's album, too. I just haven't been able to return to her once I started on D'Angelo.
I have music constantly playing with me everywhere I go... at work, in the car, playing video games, exercising, etc. and when I hear a new album I like, I play it on repeat until I practically have it memorized. I think it's the OCD in me. It's also the reason I am missing out on great podcasts like "Serial" that all of my friends keep asking me to try.

I think people are overhyping the D'Angelo album. While it has really nice grooves, I've yet to notice anything about it that stands out as special to me. I enjoyed Art Official Age a lot more earlier this year. That Charli XCX album is fun and the London Queen track makes me smile.

I love the lyrics and the throwback funk/soul vibe... and he has always had some of the best vocals in the music industry. I wish he and Erykah Badu would team up for a future project together. He put together a nice mixture of powerful, meaningful songs combined with some great laidback sexy jams.
