Yeah not really bummed because I've seen them twice in the last year and will be catching them at Boston Calling. I was already planning on skipping their set at 'Roo, Newport probably wouldn't have proven any different
Oh well. At least that leaves another big name for Saturday evening. Both me and my +1 are big fans of Head and the Heart, but we've seen them 3 times in the past 3 years. I think both of us would be happy whether or not they made the lineup. So not too much of a loss.
So Passenger has been busking around random major cities (He was actually in Boston a few weeks ago). But this guy exudes Folk. So cool. And I hope he finds his way onto the Newport lineup.

Yea, I think either Deer Tick or NFF confirmed that in their announcement. Something about "graduating to the main stage" or "first time on the main stage" or along those lines. I'm pumped about that. Should be a good set.

They're one of those groups that always make my must see list no matter how many times I've seen them. I've seen them 5 times already and are a must see at Roo and I'll most likely be at Boston Calling too. Still would have looooved a return of THATH to the Fort!
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

So the #WeinWednesday for today assures us of no Bob Dylan this year (as if there was really doubt about that). However, I just realized that next year would be the 50th Anniversary of his electric performance. Any chance of something special (not even from Dylan himself necessarily)?
I have a bad feeling that they are going to invite Jack White for Saturday ( No local date as of yet ) and that will be a tragedy, not sure how I feel about that

I suspect you are right... although I view this as a good thing!!
I think they need to in order to survive. They tried the traditional folk route in the aughts and had trouble moving tickets. There are only so many headline caliber folk acts, especially ones that will attract younger crowds (which help secure a future for the festival), so I think it's essential that they expand a little bit to keep things interesting. And it'll be a total win if Newport can share a headliner with Bonnaroo and Glastonbury. That would actually be extremely impressive.
And you can't tell me that this is not folk:
So there's plenty of potential there.

When I describe Newport Folk to people I always say something along the lines of "It's a great fest and there is some great music, but after being there you can totally get how Dylan pissed off half the crowd in 65". I think the more they branch out in booking the more diverse the crowd will become.

So in 2014 you'd rather sit through a Dylan performance over a Jack White set? Wow, just have to say that we'd disagree on that. As for Jack being added, I think it's going to happen. I think Benjamin Booker (his tour opener) being there is the tip-off. We will see.

I'm torn. I no longer actively wish to see Dylan. I've seen him 2 times in the past 5 years. Both were good shows, but it's not the Dylan that I know and love. I do think one final Newport performance would be spectacular to see. But if the choice came between Neil Young / Old Crow Medicine Show / Decemberists / John Prine / Gillian & Dave / Emmylou / Willie Nelson / Jack White / Jack Johnson / Avett Brothers / Ryan Adams / etc. and Bob Dylan as a possible headliner, I can't say I would choose Dylan. I would much rather see any other possible headliner. Heck, I'm even more excited for this Mavis Staples set than I would be for a Dylan set.

Here's how I think they would bill a Newport Dylan set:
"In 1963, Dylan captivated the audience with his acoustic guitar and brilliant lyrics. In 1965, Dylan shocked the audience by going electric. Now, in 2015, Dylan will captivate you all taking the stage with his piano. And if you're lucky, every once in a while you'll actually be able to make out some of his lyrics that once started a revolution."

The diversity of the music at Newport is what I love about it. Last year was my first year and the draw was Andrew Bird and The Lumineers--- Beck was the icing on the cake. I ended up falling in love with the first band I saw there---Hurray for the Riff Raff. I would not up to that point have considered myself a folk fan but the experience expanded my musical tastes. This year I'm bringing a friend who is a electronica/90's DJ and I told her she will love more bands than she thinks. I say bring on the new kids--they keep the whole festival fresh!
They're just swaying too far from folk. There is way too much blur
I feel like they kind of have to if they don't want every year to be virtually the same. They do plenty of repeat acts as it is and I like them spreading their wings a bit. Beck played an amazing folky set that won over many even though I remember some people feeling like "Why is Beck at a folk festival?". If Jack White did come it'd probably be a more acoustic kind of show and not like the same set you'd see at Bonnaroo. That's what I'd assume, anyway.

That's my hope for Jack as well. Would love him to dip into some of his catalogue that he won't be playing at his regular gigs/headlinign appearances. We'd obviously get stuff like "Hotel Yorba" or "We're Going to Be Friends," but "Old Enough" would be awesome (especially with some collaborators maybe?) and maybe "White Moon" or "Carolina Drama." Also, not gonna lie, if he maybe played "My Doorbell" I would be so happy.

No. Don't get me wrong, I love Bob Dylan and my respect level for him is almost immeasurable. But I've seen him three times and God forbid if he "croaked" today I wouldn't think, "God I should have seen him one more time." But I do think if I hadn't seen him before I'd have a huge itch and would yearn to see him, especially at Newport.
