You really hold hip hop to low standards, huh? Not defending Papoose, but DS2 is middling at best.
I think it's good. So do critics, fans, and generally most people that actually listen to rap that doesn't sound like it could have come out in 1994. So, to each their own I guess?
It's great party music. The production is great good. Absolutely nothing impressive about the rapping though. Plus, it's redundant.

It's great party music.
Is that not reason enough to really like an album?
So a quality party album is not quality music. Got it.
So an album that is good in one aspect must be good in all. Got it.
I've had this argument on here before and it ends with the same "But it's rap! If it's not lyrical it's not good!" bullshit thinking that allows people to justify Papoose's excuse for music as something even worth mentioning because of a couple of double entendres that anyone with a thesaurus and 30 minutes could come up with. Loosen the straps on that backpack and allow yourself to enjoy rap music simply because it sounds good.

Pay attention. I've given DS2 credit where it is due. I can enjoy it for what it is, but I won't yield to you trying to make it more than that. It is one dimensional. Mediocre. You should learn to expect more from your music than just something that sounds good. It leads to much more meaningful musical experiences.

"Pay attention, I'm right because I won't yield" Maybe just because you don't like something doesn't make it mediocre? Especially when it gets widely critically praised?

Critics don't ever get it wrong?
The biggest characteristic that this album is praised for is its darkness. Really? Because all of the other rappers before Future who rapped about doing drugs, selling drugs, having sex with multiple women, and violence always made me feel like sunshine, rainbows, and puppy dogs.
The production, while fun, is monotonous at times. Every beat is structured the same. Bass overkill countered by hi hat overkill and some varying sounds to go along with it. Not terrible, not great.
I personally think the new Future album is trash, because I generally think Future is trash, but I like the way you think. People get wayyyyyyy too hyped up for "bars." Shitty, no-charisma-having-ass rappers get caped by fanboys who are like "yeah, he got bars tho." Technical proficiency, or rapping about "deep" topics doesn't mean you're great. Look at MCs like Jay-Z, B.I.G., Tupac, Nas, etc. They were all technically good, but weren't syllable destroyers like some of the MCs around. But they have charisma, style, personality. Not just some bum-ass dude rippity-rapping all over the place.
J. Cole is perfect example of someone who is pretty competent with his word play, but brings absolutely no flair to the mic. I don't care what you rap about, or how you rap about it, but the biggest commonality between all those rappers mentioned is that they are the main attraction on their albums. They are the reason you listen. The music compliments them, not the other way around. Future doesn't come anywhere close to being that kind of a rapper. For the large majority of most of his songs he just repeats a phrase over and over again. When your name is on the album, and the biggest compliment that it can get is the work that other people contributed to the album, that should speak to the album being average.

I think you're looking at Future's music from the traditional sense of rap being a an instrumental that simply carries the MC, the beat is the pallet and the rapper is the painter. Future's music is not like that, nor does it try to be. His voice blends with the music and the words are totally secondary to the aesthetic of the song or the emotion he tries to convey. That's what people mean when they say the album is "dark", it's a combination of the drug/sex dialogue with the grimy production and distorted vocals. Match that with some contagious hooks, a little bit of honest dirty laundry thrown in there about his superstar ex, and some memorable funny lines and you have something that most people consider better than "mediocre". I honestly don't even like the album that much, I said it in the Album Of The Month Thread, but people are too comfortable labeling his entire catalog as garbage for bogus reasons. Hip hop is continually expanding, and comparing Future/Young Thug/Migos to Nas/Jay/Biggie is apples to oranges.

I agree with all of this . . .

I really like Compton. It serves it's purpose as a soundtrack for the film while also working great on it's own as a really good Rap album. The only songs where I start to lose a little interest are "Loose Cannons" and "Issues". The intro through "Darkside Gone" is a great stretch. "Animals" is excellent. And that "Deep Water" cut, oh my god.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Compton isn't actually a soundtrack for the movie. It's an album inspired by the movie.
I can only find sources implying it is the official soundtrack. Do you have something else?
"I'm working on something right now. I don't want to put it out there just yet and say that I'm definitely gonna put it out. But I'm really feeling what I'm working on right now. This would be a record that's inspired by the movie."
I was under the assumption that the movie's "official soundtrack" will basically be an NWA best-of album, along with some solo songs of the respective members.
On August 7, 2015, Dr. Dre released the album Compton: A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre exclusively on Apple Music and the iTunes Store. Though not an official soundtrack to the film Straight Outta Compton, Dr. Dre said this album would be "inspired by the movie," "During principal photography of Straight Outta Compton, I felt myself going to the studio and being so inspired by the movie that I started recording an album," Dre said on The Pharmacy, his radio show on Beats 1.
I'll be fair, in saying that we can find worse than Future.
That would be Young Thug and Migos
Interesting that the debate on DS2 was backed by the "critics even enjoyed it arguement" and then you brought up Young Thug, which well...pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/20529-barter-6/
Not saying it's wrong, just saying P4k and "critics" seem to have started to love these styles almost in spite of traditionalist backlash

Pitchfork reviewers can feel however they want. I still have the right to think they suck, that's my opinion.

Right, and I agree with you. Just think it's interesting how critics have shifted their opinions on these artists. That's all.
J. Cole is perfect example of someone who is pretty competent with his word play, but brings absolutely no flair to the mic.
Just interested, what exactly were you trying to tie J. Cole to here?
It was talked about how personality and charisma are more important traits than lyrical ability for a great MC, and I think J.Cole is a perfect example of that.

You don't think he has charisma and personality, or you don't think he's a great MC? I personally think he's above average in both, but I'd just be interested in which one you saw as more of a flaw.

I think he lacks personality and charisma a I think he's far from being a great MC.
